Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolving membrane technology integrated with machine learning (ML) algorithms can significantly advance the novel membrane material design and fabrication. Although several studies have reported ML-based assistance in membrane development, none of them have offered a complete analysis of existing ML-assisted membrane fabrication methods from material design perspective. A two-way information gateway is therefore necessary to achieve the desired objective, whereby experienced researchers and data scientists from both sides need to provide valuable insights into novel membrane development process. In this work, we offer a midway platform by providing an overall view and scopes of ML uses in membrane science. …

Sociopaths Have Formed Social Media, Alexandra Drews May 2023

Sociopaths Have Formed Social Media, Alexandra Drews

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

This philosophical analysis delves into the complex and interwoven dynamics between social media and two of Adam Kotsko's subcategories of Sociopathy, namely the "Climbers" and the "Schemers." By scrutinizing their motivations and behaviors within the realm of social media, this inquiry reveals the profound consequences that emerge from their actions. The "Climbers," driven by an insatiable desire for social status, exhibit a propensity for betraying others to achieve personal gain. Conversely, the "Schemers" engage in impulsive behaviors, prompted by an inherent need to alleviate boredom. Moreover, it becomes evident that the interplay between these subcategories has not only spawned a …

Influence Of Workplace Microaggressions On Engineering Female Faculty Motivation To Do Research, Mojdeh Mardani, Robert H. Stupnisky

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Negative and often unconscious beliefs about marginalised groups, including women and people of colour, sometimes manifest in discriminatory and degrading slights called microaggressions. Since most often microaggressions are in the form of subtle actions, unobtrusive comments, or humorous gestures, they are frequently overlooked as innocent and harmless, specifically to bystanders. However, their adverse effects on those on the receiving end are anything but innocuous, even if perpetrators are utterly unaware of their harmful comments or behaviours. Minorities and marginalized individuals often find microaggressions more harmful than blatant racism and discrimination. Six hundred and eleven STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) faculty …

Associations Between Screen Use And Depression In The Youth Population, David Franta Apr 2023

Associations Between Screen Use And Depression In The Youth Population, David Franta

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

The association between depression in the youth population and screen use has remained largely unclear. Depression is a common finding in children and adolescents, and as mobile phones, computers, and television are becoming more readily available to young populations, evaluation of the relationship between the two could likely be very important. Unfortunately, little concrete evidence has been established regarding the direct effects of screen time and the presence or development of depression. A literature review comprised of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies was performed to evaluate the current literature regarding screen use and depression in the youth population, including differences …

Evaluation Of Liquid Loading In Gas Wells Using Machine Learning, Abderraouf Chemmakh, Olusegun Stanley Tomomewo, Kegang Ling, Ahmed Shammari

Petroleum Engineering Student Publications

The inevitable result that gas wells witness during their life production is the liquid loading problem. The liquids that come with gas block the production tubing if the gas velocity supplied by the reservoir pressure is not enough to carry them to surface. Researchers used different theories to solve the problem naming, droplet fallback theory, liquid film reversal theory, characteristic velocity, transient simulations, and others. While there is no definitive answer on what theory is the most valid or the one that performs the best in all cases. This paper comes to involve a different approach, a combination between physics-based …

Progress And Development Of Syngas Fermentation Processes Toward Commercial Bioethanol Production, Ademola Owoade, Ali Alshami, David Levin, Sagheer Onaizi, Zuhair O. Malaibari

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Syngas is created through the thermochemical conversion of biomass using gasification or pyrolysis and from CO-rich off-gases obtained from industries such as steel mills. The Wood–Ljungdahl metabolic pathway, or one of its variations, is used by acetogenic bacteria to convert syngas components (CO, H2, and CO2) to alcohols and other compounds. Many factors affect how well syngas is fermented, including the bacteria species used, syngas composition, medium components, bioreactor type, operational parameters used and the gas–liquid mass transfer rate. These parameters impact carbon and electron flow in the bacteria, influencing the distribution, concentration and metabolic end-product …
