Results from 20 samples showed that supercritical CO2 enables extraction of a considerable portion (15%–65%) of the hydrocarbons from the Bakken shales within 24 hours. The results may be used to improve modeling and forecasting the effects of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and suggest the possibility for increasing ultimate recovery, and possibly CO2 storage, in some areas of the Bakken Formation.

Lexical Categories In Lengua De Señas Argentina, Roman Caceres May 2017

Lexical Categories In Lengua De Señas Argentina, Roman Caceres

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to identify lexical categories of Lengua de Señas Argentina (LSA). Sign languages, in general, have not been extensively researched. For example, the LSA section of the World Atlas of Language Structures only mentions irregular negatives and question particles.

The research methodology included interviews with fluent deaf signers. Different descriptions in LSA were video recorded, annotated and analyzed. The researcher made initial hypotheses about the syntactic nature of signs based on the strategy used for their elicitation. Then, the researcher tested the hypotheses through syntactic analysis.

During the analysis, the researcher identified two varieties of …

Smith, Guy M. Smith, Elizabeth Bjerke, Cody Christensen, Thomas Q. Carney, Paul A. Craig, Mary Niemczyk

Aviation Faculty Publications

This article is the third in a series of reports called Pilot Source Study 2015. In 2010, when the U.S. Congress considered dramatic changes to airline pilot qualifications, researchers from the ‘‘Pilot Source Study 2010’’ sampled pilots from six regional airlines to investigate how pilots’ backgrounds affected their performance in airline training. In 2012, when the FAA proposed rulemaking to implement Public Law 111-216, the ‘‘Pilot Source Study 2012’’ researchers repeated the study with a new sample of pilots from seven different regional airlines. Data from these two studies were combined into a Pre-Law dataset. On August 1, 2013, the …

Production Of Mesophase Pitch From Gasified Lignin-Derived Tars, Adedayo O. Idowu May 2017

Production Of Mesophase Pitch From Gasified Lignin-Derived Tars, Adedayo O. Idowu

Theses and Dissertations

Lignin tars are created as a by-product of lignin gasification. Significant effort has gone into minimizing tar production. However, no process has been shown to completely eliminate its formation. As a result, the tar is being used to manufacture low value products such as asphalt, or is being used as a fuel in fixed combustion systems.

The research presented here is part of an effort to increase the viability of using lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock to produce high value products. We tested the postulate that tars derived from lignin could be processed into a mesophase pitch allowable for conversion …

Collegiate Training Initiative - Training Methods As A Predictor To Success, Stephen Robello

Theses and Dissertations

This research project studied the tools and requirements of the Air Traffic –Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) schools and how they affect the outcome of training at the FAA Academy, the first assigned facility and second facility prior to certification. The Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) has been in place for over 25 years, training college students to get a recommendation to apply for a Federal Air Traffic Controller career. From 2014-2016, the hiring practices changed from a three-track method to a two-track method which took away the AT-CTI hiring path and combined it with applicants who had no experience. …

Female Airline Transport Pilots: The Role Of Mentoring, Paul Cline May 2017

Female Airline Transport Pilots: The Role Of Mentoring, Paul Cline

Theses and Dissertations

Women have been a part of aviation since its inception, yet they have been traditionally underrepresented in the ranks of commercial pilots. This study explored what role mentoring played in the lives and careers of female Airline Transport Pilots (ATP). Participants completed a modified version of the Mentor Role Instrument (MRI) developed by Ragins and McFarlin.

It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between female ATP who had been mentored and those who had not. Of the female ATP who had been mentored, those who reported an informal mentoring relationship rated their relationship higher than those who …

The Effects Of Sms Implementation On Safety Culture Within Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, Ray William Gardner May 2017

The Effects Of Sms Implementation On Safety Culture Within Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, Ray William Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Safety Management Systems (SMS) have now become regulation within FAR Part 121 operations with U.S. airports and FAR Part 135 operators coming next. An assessment of the implementation of voluntary SMS programs and their effects on safety culture within major U.S. Helicopter Air Ambulance (HAA) operators was conducted. This study is designed to see if safety management systems, safety culture or the lack thereof changes the perception of HAA operators and crew members. A Likert style survey was administered to HAA pilots, paramedics, and flight nurses who were asked for their perception on their ability to communicate freely, belief their …

Use Of Rounded Base Turns In General Aviation Traffic Patterns: A Quantitative Analysis, Lewis Robert James Archer May 2017

Use Of Rounded Base Turns In General Aviation Traffic Patterns: A Quantitative Analysis, Lewis Robert James Archer

Theses and Dissertations

Prevention of in-flight loss of control (I-LOC) in General Aviation (GA) continues to be identified as a most-wanted safety improvement by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), with emphasis on low-altitude maneuvering. A possible technique to mitigate I-LOC is modification of the rectangular traffic pattern used by aircraft arriving and maneuvering within the airspace around an airport. The rectangular pattern is used to align the aircraft with the runway for landing and consists of a “base leg” in which two 90-degree directional changes are accomplished. A “rounded-base” could instead be conducted, consisting of a constant 180- degree turn, potentially resulting …
