Special And General Education Partners Co-Teaching Through The Structural Lens Of Complexity Theory, Shirley Ann Johnson Jan 2017

Special And General Education Partners Co-Teaching Through The Structural Lens Of Complexity Theory, Shirley Ann Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Inclusive education is one of the most complex and demanding reforms in schools today. How school systems are structured may account for the many difficulties schools are having in strengthening, sustaining, and expanding inclusive education. Co-teaching is an instructional delivery method that offers a promising practice towards successful inclusive education. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perspectives of co-teachers actively engaged in expanding the practice of co-teaching to help leaders strengthen, sustain, and expand effective inclusive education for students with disabilities.

Complexity theory provided the theoretical framework to explore how the co-teachers interacted and self-organized when …

What Is Teacher Effectiveness? A Case Study Of Educator Perceptions In A Midwest Elementary School, Christine Lynn Job Jan 2017

What Is Teacher Effectiveness? A Case Study Of Educator Perceptions In A Midwest Elementary School, Christine Lynn Job

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that teacher effectiveness is the most significant school-level factor impacting student achievement (McCaffrey, Koretz, Lockwood, & Hamilton, 2004; Rivkin, Hanushek, & Kain, 2005; Rockoff, 2004), and yet little is known about teacher and administrator perceptions of teacher effectiveness. Through this qualitative case study, I explored the perceptions of elementary school teachers and their principal regarding teacher effectiveness. I examined the extent to which there was a shared understanding of teacher effectiveness, if teachers and their principal perceptions were the same or different, and how teacher perceptions aligned to the teacher evaluation system used at this school. Semi-structured …

The Relationship Of Fidelity On Simulation Performance, Gail Johnson Jan 2017

The Relationship Of Fidelity On Simulation Performance, Gail Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The literature is limited and conflicting regarding the effect of simulation fidelity on nurse performance during simulation. Limited publications were found that addressed all aspects of simulation in health care: mannequin, environment, equipment, scenario, and psychological.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fidelity and nurse experience on performance in simulation. The NLN/Jeffries Simulation Framework provided the theoretical foundation for this study

Design and Sample: For this descriptive study, 35 registered nurses were randomly assigned to participate in a high fidelity or low fidelity simulation scenario. A 12-minute scenario was administered and identical for …

"A Degree Is A Part Of The Puzzle, But Only A Piece.” Understanding How Employers Determine The Value Of Academic Credentials, Brenda Kaspari Jan 2017

"A Degree Is A Part Of The Puzzle, But Only A Piece.” Understanding How Employers Determine The Value Of Academic Credentials, Brenda Kaspari

Theses and Dissertations

With the skyrocketing costs of higher education and the increased scrutiny of how educational institutions prepare graduates for the workplace, this dissertation explored how the “outsiders,” or employers, view and determine the value of academic credentials. Using the premise of credentialism, this grounded theory, qualitative study addressed two major questions; first, how do employees evaluate academic credentials, and second, what factors are important to employers?

Through the interviews, it was discovered that there were gray areas when determining the value of a college credential. There were three critical findings. First, college degrees are a valuable credential, yet there are issues …

Study Of Two-Phase And Single-Phase Flow Behavior In Channels Of Sudden Area Change Using Experimental And Computational Approach, Ashish Pramod Kotwal Jan 2017

Study Of Two-Phase And Single-Phase Flow Behavior In Channels Of Sudden Area Change Using Experimental And Computational Approach, Ashish Pramod Kotwal

Theses and Dissertations

It is well recognized in continuum mechanics that the theoretical origination for single-phase flows fundamentally based on the beginning of field equations paraphrasing the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. These equations are accompanied by the appropriate constitutive associations for thermodynamic state and energy transfer, which specify the thermodynamic and transport of a specific fundamental material. Nevertheless, the multi-phase flows equations derivation is, in general, considerably more convoluted than for single-phase flows. This is predominantly due to the presence of significant discontinuities of the fluid properties through the interfaces and complicated flow characteristics approximating the interfaces, separating the individual …

Functionalization Of Cyclopalladated Ligands Using Secondary Phosphines And Meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid, Jonathan Kukowski Jan 2017

Functionalization Of Cyclopalladated Ligands Using Secondary Phosphines And Meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid, Jonathan Kukowski

Theses and Dissertations

Cyclopalladation of organic ligands followed by reactions at the C–Pd bond with MPR2 (M = Li, K, or H) or other reagents (e.g. oxidants) is a desirable strategy for the synthesis of hemilabile bidentate ligands due to the large library of known cyclopalladated complexes (CPCs). This dissertation is composed of three projects on the functionalization of cyclopalladated ligands.

In the first study, a new method for (sp3)C–P bond formation using diphenylphosphine was studied. Conditions for the synthesis of aminophosphines were optimized for the reactions of dinuclear chloro-bridged (sp3)C–Pd CPCs and HPPh2. The best yields were obtained with 9 equivalents of …

Trailer Park Residents: Are They Worthy Of Society's Respect, Steve Anderson Jan 2017

Trailer Park Residents: Are They Worthy Of Society's Respect, Steve Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Existing research is limited in explaining the existence of and reasons for stereotypes held against trailer park residents. This study uses an experimental design to measure attitudes towards trailer park residents, specifically in terms of being considered worthy of society’s respect. An Internet questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of 559 introductory sociology students at a Midwestern university using semantic differentials to measure attitudes towards a fictitious couple. Participants were divided into a control and an experimental group. The groups were presented with two different vignettes, which were the same except for the experimental group where the vignette …

To understand what diversity in MLS and MLT education looks like, the following research questions were identified:

1. What are MLS and MLT instructors’ perceived levels of importance for addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse student population?

2. How do MLS …

Design And Manufacture Of A Negative Index Metamaterial Using A Magnetized Photonic Crystal, Mohamed Zein Radwan Jan 2017

Design And Manufacture Of A Negative Index Metamaterial Using A Magnetized Photonic Crystal, Mohamed Zein Radwan

Theses and Dissertations

Negative index materials (NIM) are artificial structures in which the refractive index for light has a negative value over some frequency range. This does not occur in any known natural materials, and thus is only achievable with engineered structures known as metamaterials. Metamaterials demonstrating a negative refractive index for light usually consist of arrays of wires and cut-ring structures: such media are characterized by both the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability being negative. My method for obtaining a NIM is different from previous attempts. I get the negative magnetic permeability from a ferrite material which is the host medium for …

The Dog Days Should Be Over: The Inequality Between The Privacy Rights Of Apartment Dwellers And Those Of Homeowners With Respect To Drug Detection Dogs, Megan Gordon Jan 2017

The Dog Days Should Be Over: The Inequality Between The Privacy Rights Of Apartment Dwellers And Those Of Homeowners With Respect To Drug Detection Dogs, Megan Gordon

North Dakota Law Review

Recent judicial opinions throughout the country have muddied the waters concerning the extent of privacy rights protected by the Fourth Amendment beyond the walls of an individual’s home. More specifically, courts have drawn a distinction between an apartment dweller’s privacy rights and the privacy rights of a homeowner concerning drug detection dogs. In Florida v. Jardines, the Supreme Court of the United States held the use of a drug detection dog on a front porch violates the homeowner's constitutional rights. In State v. Nguyen, the North Dakota Supreme Court followed the Eighth and other federal circuit courts to …

Determining Glacier Drift Ages Using Multispectral Remote Sensing Data, Paula Crock Jan 2017

Determining Glacier Drift Ages Using Multispectral Remote Sensing Data, Paula Crock

Theses and Dissertations

Determining the ages of glacier drifts in Antarctica can help paleoclimatologists determine

the changes Earth’s climate has gone through and thereby inform models for future climate

change prediction. However, many of these drifts are difficult to reach for sample collection

necessary to determine their ages. This research attempts to use multispectral remote sensing

data to expand the mapping of drift ages from known point measurements regionally. This

research is based on existing drift ages from Ong Valley, Transantarctic Mountains. Two

methods were used to determine a combination of the image band data that would sufficiently

distinguish the three age-distinct drift …

Characterization Of The Immune Stimulating Properties Of Type Iii Secretion System Needle Protein Bscf From Bordetella Pertussis: Towards The Development Of A New Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Travis Douglas Alvine Jan 2017

Characterization Of The Immune Stimulating Properties Of Type Iii Secretion System Needle Protein Bscf From Bordetella Pertussis: Towards The Development Of A New Acellular Pertussis Vaccine, Travis Douglas Alvine

Theses and Dissertations

Despite widespread vaccination, Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whooping cough, is still a threat to global health. One cause of pertussis reemergence observed in many countries is ineffective immunity generated by the current acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines. Interestingly, recent studies have shown that TLR stimulating agents can enhance aP vaccine induced immunity. Type III secretion (T3S) system needle proteins from many gram-negative bacteria have been shown to be strong TLR agonists that induce NF-B/AP-1 signaling and promote inflammatory cytokine release from innate cells in vitro. In this study, we investigated the immune modulating properties of BscF, a purified T3S …
