Space Studies Faculty Publications
Harald Von Beckh was born in Vienna, Austria, on November 17, 1917. He graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from the Vienna University Faculty of Medicine in 1940. He began working at the Academy of Aviation Medicine in Berlin where he helped in the development of the concept of the Keplerian trajectory to obtain periods of microgravity while collaborating with Dr. Heinz von Diringshofen. In 1941 he was appointed as a faculty member at the Academy of Medicine of the Luftwaffe.
At the end of the war, without any possibility to continue his research in Germany, Von Beckh made contacts …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Objectives
The primary aim of this study was to examine relationships between digit ratio (2D:4D) and game‐related statistics in professional and semi‐professional male basketball players. The secondary aim was to quantify differences in mean 2D:4Ds between starting and reserve players.
Methods
Using a cross‐sectional design, 93 male basketball players from the professional Australian National Basketball League and the semi‐professional South Australian Premier League were measured in‐season for height, mass, and 2D:4D, with game‐related statistics collected end‐season. Linear relationships between right and left 2D:4Ds and game‐related statistics were quantified using nonparametric partial correlations, and differences in mean 2D:4Ds between starting and …

Application Of Recurrent Neural Network For The Prediction Of Target Non-Apneic Arousal Regions In Physiological Signals, Naimahmed Nesaragi, Shubha Majumder, Ashish Sharma, Kouhyar Tavakolian, Shivnarayan Patidar
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
This work presents a new method for detection of target non-apneic arousals by applying a recurrent neural network architecture on the various specified polysomnographic (PSG) signals. The proposed two stage architecture uses sequences of instantaneous frequencies and spectral entropies of the chosen PSG signals as feature vectors. At the first stage, these feature vectors are used to train several long-short term memory (LSTM) models. The LSTM networks can learn long-term relationships between time steps of time-frequency based sequences obtained out of physiological signals. As a second stage, some quadratic discriminant (QD) layers are modelled and appended to the trained LSTMs …

Utility Of International Normative 20 M Shuttle Run Values For Identifying Youth At Increased Cardiometabolic Risk, Duncan S. Buchan, Gareth Knox, Anwen M. Jones, Grant Tomkinson, Julien S. Baker
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of international normative centiles for the 20 m shuttle run test (20mSRT) to identify youth at increased cardiometabolic risk. This was a cross-sectional study involving 961 children aged 10–17 years (53% girls) from the United Kingdom. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves determined the discriminatory ability of cardiorespiratory fitness percentiles for predicting increased cardiometabolic risk. ROC analysis demonstrated a significant but poor discriminatory accuracy of cardiorespiratory fitness in identifying low/high cardiometabolic risk in girls (AUC = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.54–0.63; p = 0.04), and in boys (AUC = 0.59, 95% CI: …

Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson
Tumor Biology And Hyperbaric Oxygen: Differential Effects In Tumor Versus Normal Tissues, Paul Anderson
International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine
When assessing the potential benefits of HBOT in oncology patients occasional confusion arises when extrapolating the cytokine, epigenetic and other effects of HBOT in non-cancerous tissues (neurological and other injuries etc.) versus those in cancerous tissues. This confusion often results in misinterpretation of data and concern over potential harm in HBOT oncology cases. The focus of this presentation is to point out the data supporting these differences as we know it to date and underscore the benefits while decreasing this clinical confusion.

International Symposium for Hyperbaric Medicine
This session will introduce the attendee to the impact of oxygen free radicals on wound healing. Ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) and oxygen free radicals are defined and the basic chemistry surrounding reactive oxygen species (ROS) will be discussed. Detailed analysis of the inflammatory phase of wound healing and the role of oxygen free radicals in inflammation are presented.

Low-Cost Experimental System For Center Of Mass And Center Of Pressure Measurement, Cai Xia Yang
Low-Cost Experimental System For Center Of Mass And Center Of Pressure Measurement, Cai Xia Yang
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Falls happen when the center of mass of body is outside of its base of support and the recovery of the center of mass back to the base of support failed. Balance ability is an essential ability needed for humans' daily routine activities. Improving balance ability should result in a better and more convenient way of living. There are various factors influence on balance ability. The focus of this paper is to investigate which factors have the greatest effect on balance. Balance ability is measured by deviations of center of pressure in both x-direction (side-to-side) and y-direction (front-to-back) with the …

Feral horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) represent an iconic era of the North Dakota Badlands. Their uncertain history raises management questions regarding origins, genetic diversity, and long-term genetic viability. Hair samples with follicles were collected from 196 horses in the Park and used to sequence the control region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and to profile 12 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers. Three mtDNA haplotypes found in the TRNP horses belonged to haplogroups L and B. The control region variation was low with haplotype diversity of 0.5271, nucleotide diversity of 0.0077 and mean pairwise difference of 2.93. We …

Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients regularly exhibit abnormal gait patterns. Automated differentiation of abnormal gait from normal gait can serve as a potential tool for early diagnosis as well as monitoring the effect of PD treatment. The aim of current study is to differentiate PD patients from healthy controls, on the basis of features derived from plantar vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) data during walking at normal pace. The current work presents a comprehensive study highlighting the efficacy of different machine learning classifiers towards devising an accurate prediction system. Selection of meaningful feature based on sequential forward feature selection, the swing …
