Past And Present Molluscan Fauna, Sheyenne River, North Dakota, Rodney D. Norby

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Mollusks of the Sheyenne River in eastern North Dakota were studied during the summer of 1966. Both living mollusks from the river and fossil forms from the exposed terrace sediments were collected. Nine species of mussels presently occur in the Sheyenne River: Fusconaia flava (Rafinesque), Amblema costata Rafinesque , Lasmigona compressa (Lea), L. complanata (Barnes), Anodonta grandis Say, Anodontoides ferussacianus (Lea), Strophitus rugosus (Swainson), Lampsilis siliquoidea (Barnes), and L. ventricosa (Barnes). Three other species, Quadrula quadrula Rafinesque, Proptera alata (Say) and Ligumia recta latissima (Rafinesque) occur only as fossils in terrace sediments.

This research was undertaken to determine the effect on growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis of a single stress followed at some later time by a second stress, using temperature change and osmotic pressure change as stress factors.

Growth rate of T. pyriformis was determined under standard conditions of temperature and osmotic pressure (29°C and 100 milliosmols). A single stress consisting of a decrease in temperature to 20°C or an increase in osmotic pressure to 300 milliosmols was applied to an exponentially growing culture and its effect noted. Time And Soil Development On Lateral Moraines, Martin River Glacier, South-Central Alaska, John R. Tinker Jr.

During the summer of 1966, eighteen soil profiles on a series of 21 lateral moraines, were studied to ascertain the relationship of time to soil development. The moraines are located on Charlotte Ridge on the south margin of the Martin River Glacier in south-central Alaska. The elevation of the highest moraine is approximately fifteen hundred feet and is located 800 feet above the present level of the glacier.

Some Effects Of Intravenous Administration Of Juglone To Anesthetized Dogs, John P. Ries

Juglone (5-hydroxy 1:1; napthoquinone), a chemical substance originally isolated from the walnut tree, has not been investigated to any great extent. Preliminary reports revealed that juglone had depressant effects on a number of species of laboratory animals when administered intraperitoneally and was lethal in large doses. The present study was undertaken to elucidate some of the pharmacological properties of juglone when administered intravenously to anesthetized dogs.

Twenty-six adult mongrel dogs were subdivided into three groups. The animals were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and infused with the juglone solution through the femoral vein. Two groups of ten each received 3 xng/kg …

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Lee Clayton and approved by Walter L. Moore -and John R. Reid as members of the examining connnittee, of which Mr. Clayton was chairman.

In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.

The principal mechanism of scarp migration is soilfall which is initiated by undercutting of the scarp …
