The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in instructional salary costs per student credit hour of major program offerings that are common among the four state colleges in North Dakota and identify the factors which contributed to these cost differences. Dickinson, Mayville, Minot and Valley City State Colleges were the four institutions which were examined in the study. The ten major areas which were common at the four institutions were: art, biology, business education, chemistry, social science, mathematics, English, music, physical education and professional education.

The Influence Of Curiosity On Intentional And Incidental Learning, Richard L. Metzger

Previous research has indicated that the level of curiosity of an individual is related to the amount of information which that individual can acquire incidentally. The present study was conducted to test two hypotheses: (a) High curiosity children will learn more material incidentally than low curiosity children, and (b) the level of curiosity will effect intentional learning.

Twenty-eight fifth grade students (14 high curious, 14 low) were selected as subjects from a pool of 77 on the basis of scores attained on the Penney and McCann (1964) Children’s Reactive Curiosity Scale. The intentional learning task was a paired-associate presentation of …

The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine are transaminated to their respective a-keto acid analogues; a-keto- isocaproate (KIC) a-keto-p-methyIvalerate (KMV) and a-ketoiso- valerate (KIV) in normal mammalian tissues. Recently an interest in the genetic anomaly "branched-chain ketoaciduria" or "maple syrup urine disease", a metabolic disease involving the oxidative decarboxylation of the three branched-chain CC-keto acids, has stimulated efforts to characterize the nature of the enzymic conversions leading from the a-keto acids to their acyl coenzyme A products. Piaget (1929) contends that a verbal interview is the only procedure which is flexible enough to follow and examine the development of cognitive processes in children. However verbal methods are inconsistent with the suggestion by Piaget (1951, 1963) and several colleagues (Furth, 1964, 1966; Sinclair-de-Zwart, 1969) that language merely reflects underlying cognitive processes, and is not a source of logical development. In addition verbal methods allow for verbal misunderstandings by both subjects and experimenters, provide for experimenter bias and may foster response sets.

Sand bars and beaches of the Mississippi (MR) and Wild Rice (WRR) Rivers, Minnesota, were sampled to allow determination of sand texture, capillarity, pore space, organic content, temperature, chemistry (pH, Og, CO3 and HCO3 alkalinity, total hardness, Ca, Mg, PO4, NH3-N, and NO2-N) of interstitial, water, and composition and concentration of psammo-organisms, all in relation to current influences, distance above and below waterline, and depth into the sand.

Minimum and maximum values for capillary rise were 36-80 mm in the MR and 118-191 mm in the WRR; organic content was 217.4 mg/10cc sand for the MR and 377.1 mg/10cc sand …

The Sharp-tailed Grouse has evolved a highly complex system of visual and acoustical signals due to increased social interactions necessary with the predator pressure of an exposed environment. The first portion of the spring mating season is primarily involved with establishment and defense of territories. Predominant acoustical signals are aggressive, highly ritualized, and involved in individual location and recognition. During mid-season females visit the lek, are courted by males, and copulations occur. Acoustical signals are concerned with attracting and stimulating females, vary on a time and frequency continuum, and are thus not as highly ritualized. During the last portion of …

Overwintering Of Three Species Of Snakes In Northwestern Minnesota, Jeffrey W. Lang

The hibernacula, overwintering cycles, extent of return to the hibernacula, and associated movements of three species of snakes were studied near Itasca State Park in northwestern Minnesota. Red-bellied snakes (Storeria occipitomacula), smooth green snakes (Opheodrys vernalis), and young eastern gartersnakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) were collected at enclosed hibernacula and marked by scale clipping. Inactive ant mounds built by Formica ulkei were utilised extensively as hibernacula by these snakes. During two winters, eleven mounds yielded 2260 Storeria, 409 Opheodrys, and 182 Thamnophis. Temperatures near overwintering snakes in five hibernacula ranged from 0-5 C. Mortality occurred in one mound where snakes were exposed …

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine what relationships exist between a child's performance of selected tasks of conservation and selected factors in reading readiness. Comparisons were also made between conservation and reading readiness to selected variables such as mental age, sex, chronological age, and teacher prediction.

Procedure: The research population for this study was comprised of 81 first grade subjects enrolled in four classrooms of the Grand Forks Public Schools during the 1970-1971 school year. Problem: It was the primary purpose of this study to develop a secondary school physics curriculum guide for use within a modular-flexible schedule framework. A secondary aspect was to design a model modular-flexible schedule specifically for physics instruction.

Procedure: Information has been obtained through the direct visitation of seventeen schools in the Minneapolis-St. Paul and suburban areas which were using a modular-flexible scheduled program. A comprehensive study has been made of the physics curricula used in each school to determine its relative effectiveness within a modular-flexible framework.

Erosion And Sedimentation In Lake Ashtabula, Southeastern North Dakota, Darryll T. Pederson

Theses and Dissertations

Erosion along the shore of Lake Ashtabula and nearshore and offshore sedimentation were studied from May 1969 to December 1970. The lake, located in the southeastern part of North Dakota, was formed when the Baldhill Dam stopped the flow of the Sheyenne River in 1950. Maximum depth of the lake is 45 feet in the inundated river channel immediately above the dam. The lake is 27 miles long and ranges in width from 1/3 to 1/2 mile.

Shoreline erosion, measured at stations located at 100-foot intervals around the margins of the lake, was found to be a major source of …
