The use of stabilization ponds to dispose of municipal wastes has become popular with many North Dakota cities. When managed properly they are an efficient and economical method of waste disposal and may not adversely affect groundwater quality. In order to achieve efficient treatment, the ponds must be built in sediment that has permeability low enough to inhibit excessive percolation of wastewater into the subsurface. Some North Dakota cities have not met this basic requirement in the construction of their ponds. As a result, insufficiently treated pond liquids are allowed to reach the water table, potentially contaminating groundwater supplies. Three …

The archeology of the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site is being studied by the University of North Dakota Anthropology Department. The age of the near surface sediment and depositional history of Quaternary sediments are useful to archeologists involved in locating and interpreting the cultural resources of this area.

There are eight river terraces within a 300 square kilometre area surrounding the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, near Stanton, North Dakota. , The terraces are former river floodplains that have been preserved above the present floodplain. Novel Tetrazoles And Triazoles As Possible Antiinflammatory Agents., James Roy Maxwell

A total of 21 various 5-aryl-2H-tetrazoles, 5-aryl-2H-tetrazole-2-acetic acids, and (4-phenyl-5-aryl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)thioacetic acids were synthesized and tested as possible antiinflammatory agents. The aryl substituent consisted of a substituted phenyl group with the following substitution: H, 4-OMe, 3,4-diOMe, 3,4,5-tri-OMe, 4-OH, 3,4,-di-OH, or 3,4,5-tri-OH. All compounds and intermediates were characterized on the basis of their infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectral data. Satisfactory elemental analysis were obtained for all novel compounds.All 5-aryl-2H-tetrazoles, 5-aryl-2H-tetrazole-2-acetic acids, and (4-phenyl-5-aryl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)thioacetic acids were examined for superoxide scavenging ability in an in vitro assay. The purpose of this study was, first, to compare the quality of writing that was generated from remembered dreams with other story writing that was created from beginning sentences, second, was to explore the remembered dream world of ninth graders as to the importance, place, and creative use of dreams in waking life.Twenty students, 10 from each of two ninth-grade English classes in a west-central Minnesota junior high school, composed the research population.The two groups of 10 created three pieces of writing, Group A from dreams and Group B from beginning sentences. Low Molecular Weight Ligands And Trace Element Transport: A Study Employing Modified Gel Chromatography (Milk, Infant Formulas, Zinc)., Mark Thomas Martin

The purpose of this study was to detect and identify low molecular weight (<10,000 Da) copper and zinc binding ligands in biological materials believed to function in trace element transport using modified gel chromatography (MGC) as the major detective method. MCG involves the gel filtration of a biological specimen on a column equilibrated with a chosen metal ion. In this way, the ligands can be separated from each other without being separated from the investigative metal ion. The ligands were separated by molecular weight on the gel matrix and the column eluent was monitored for metal binding peaks by the use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Several ligands could be detected in a single sample and the detection limit was 0.1 (mu)mol for some common ligands.Milks and infant formulas were examined for the human species-specific zinc binding ligand thought to be essential to the acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) infant. Citrate was detected in all milks but picolinate was not detectable in any. Formula, human, and goat milk also contained detectable free amino acids. Human and bovine milk proteins also bound metal. No human species-specific ligands were detected. Alternative causes of the diet-dependent AE zinc deficiency and a mechanism for the molecular origin of AE are suggested.Viokase, a porcine pancreatic extract, has been found to be effective in the treatment of variant AE, an effect reportedly due to the presence of citrate or picolinate. Neither ligand was detectable by MGC although amino acid ligands were highly concentrated. Given the competitive nature of trace metal-ligand binding, some other aspect of Viokase probably ameliorates the variant AE symptoms.Ligands were detected in porcine intestinal mucosa. However, their potential as transport ligands depends on future studies to determine if the ligands were artefacts of sample preparation.Conjugated bilirubin, peptides, and amino acids were identified as ligands in human bile and are probably also present in porcine bile. The peptides were not individually identified but possibly play specific roles in normal copper excretion.

The present study was undertaken to determine whether an over-emphasis on whole vs. large detail locations on the Rorschach Inkblot Test, as assessed by the W/D ratio, would be manifested in individual differences in information processing style. It was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the whole direction would perform better on visual information processing tasks which require global analysis of the stimulus configuration and which ostensibly are mediated to a greater degree by the right hemisphere. Conversely, it was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the large detail direction would perform better on information processing …
