The Impact Of Probable Depression On Daily Performance In College Students: "Morningness" Versus "Eveningness", Iwona Chelminski

In the present study responses on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS- SF), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) were compared in 1,617 college undergraduates. Also, the "eveningness-morningness" dimension, as measured by the Horne and Ostberg guestionnaire (H&O), was examined among the "probably" depressed student population. In addition, the impact of the "probable" depression on performance on various memory tests at different times of day was investigated. Finally, performance of the "probably" depressed students was compared with performance of the nondepressed students. In the first part of the study 1,617 undergraduates were surveyed and 136 …

Adriamycin is an important anticancer agent. However, the clinical use of Adriamycin is limited by its undesirable side effects, especially cardiotoxicity. One of the most likely mechanisms of Adriamycin toxicity is the production of reactive oxygen free radicals. Catalase is a major enzyme involved in detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H202) in mammalian cells. It has been shown that catalase activity per g tissue of the heart is very low in comparison to other tissues, being only about 2% that of liver in the mouse. This less proficient ability to dispose of reactive oxygen species may be responsible for the high …

Previous research suggests that menopausal women often complain of increased physical symptoms, depression, and memory difficulties. Reports of subsequent improvement in memory following estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) among the clinical population abound, suggesting a possible link between estrogen and memory performance.

The purpose of this study was to explore the therapeutic aspects of music and its effect upon a child with selective mutism. Selectively mute children are able to speak, but for a variety of reasons, refuse to do so. Music was viewed as a potentially non-threatening intervention appropriate for a child with a diagnosis of selective mutism. A qualitative case study design was chosen for the purpose of this study.One eight year old female child with selective mutism was selected as the subject for this study. Although there has been a resurgence of interest in the psychological study of religiosity and dimensions of spirituality, few studies have explored the relationship between measured personality traits of normal adults, aspects of spirituality and religious practice. This study is intended to further such an exploration.A sample of 181 upper middle class male volunteers aged 35-55 participated in the study. Participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the Spiritual Orientation Inventory (SOI), the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (SDS), and a Demographics and Religiosity Profile (DRP). This qualitative study focuses on the experiences of three at-risk middle school students in an interdisciplinary team organization. The purpose was to investigate the attitudes and experiences of these students as they engaged in the activities of an interdisciplinary team. The sources of data were the descriptive field notes generated by observation, in-depth interviews of the participants, documents from the site, and a field diary which contained the author's reflective insights.The portraits of the at-risk students studied revealed personal characteristics and behaviors that challenged their opportunities for successful school experience. Moral Orientation In Law Students: A Longitudinal Study From A Relational Perspective., Anne Marie Dohrenwend

The purpose of this study was to examine trends in moral orientation among law students at a small midwestern law school. A second purpose was to examine self-silencing of moral perspective in these law students. Moral orientation was assessed at the onset of the participants' legal study (Time 1) and at the end of their second academic year (Time 2) using the Relationship Self Inventory. Self-silencing was assessed at Time 2 only, using the Silencing the Self Scale.Results provide some support for gender difference in moral orientation. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a key gluconeogenic enzyme. In gluconeogenic tissues, cytosolic PEPCK is essential for glucose formation whereas no metabolic role is defined for mitochondrial PEPCK. Large amounts of PEPCK activity are present in the mucosa of small intestine from rabbits although this tissue is not known to be a significant site for gluconeogenesis in adult animals. Thus the intent of the project was to investigate the intracellular distribution and role of PEPCK in rabbit enterocytes from the small intestine.Initially, a procedure was developed to isolate viable enterocytes from the small intestine of rabbits for use in enzyme and …

Predation on clutches of upland nesting ducks has been implicated as a major cause of low duck production in the Prairie Pothole Region. Management techniques that reduce predation rates and are socially acceptable are of interest to wildlife managers. This thesis examines differences in nest success of upland nesting ducks in areas where supplemental food was provided (treatment areas) for striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) compared to areas where supplemental food was not provided (control areas). Differences in nest success between areas occupied by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and coyotes (Canis latrans) were also examined. The study was conducted from 1993-94 …

There has been much questioning in the chemistry education literature of the effectiveness of introductory chemistry courses, particularly pointing to the high dropout and failure rate. Studies question the effectiveness of lecturing, the most common methodology for teaching introductory chemistry. Currently there is much discussion as to use of alternative, constructivist teaching and learning models which are more consistent with scientific inquiry.

This study is a qualitative, naturalistic investigation of the perceptions of seven college chemistry professors who hold doctorates in chemistry, teach introductory chemistry, and express interest in improving teaching and learning. In-depth open-ended interviews were used to gain …

The current population of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) in the northern badlands of North Dakota originated from a accidental release in 1977. Efforts to manage the elk population in the northern badlands have been hindered for a number of reasons 1) the census data from fixed-wing aircraft does not adequately determine population sizes in forested areas with low numbers of individuals and herds, 2) habitat use and seasonal home range of elk in this region have not been identified.

An overview of existing research shows that dually diagnosed individuals present a unique and complex challenge for family members and the professionals who work with them.

This exploratory study examined the impact on and family perceptions of the dual disorders as well as their treatment experience. Face to face interviews were conducted with ten parents who were selected from a treatment facility on the basis of specific criteria mainly, parents of a dually diagnosed adolescent recently having been or currently in treatment. Selections were also based on availability and willingness to participate.

Presenting problem. The measurement of expressed occupational preference continues to be affected by occupational sextyping, a non-interest related variable. Teasing out bias (sextype) from restrictiveness (real and artifact gender differences) is needed to help improve sex-fairness in vocational measurement. Occupational sextyping may affect internalizations of external expectancies of what one should be like or likes as much as what an individual is truly like or likes, altering preference.Research and methods. Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) describes physical and neurological (motor, cognitive, and behavioral) deficits that result from maternal alcohol intake during pregnancy. FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation and birth defects in the U.S., ahead of spina bifida, fragile X syndrome, and down's syndrome. The incidence of FAS increased more than three-fold from 1979 to 1992; this increasing incidence rate, enhances the importance of the Physical Therapists' role in early recognition and intervention of FAS.
