Ecology Of Bighorn Sheep In Relation To Habitat And Oil Development In The Little Missouri Badlands., Roger Sayre

I conducted field research on bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in western North Dakota to evaluate their distribution, habitat use, activity patterns, and responses to disturbance. The study was conducted May-December from 1992-94, at Magpie Creek, an area with a high density of roads and oil wells, and Moody Plateau, with a low density of roads and oil wells.Radio-collared ewes (n = 8) at Magpie Creek used steep non-vegetated terrain more than available during summer, but less than available during fall. They used closed juniper areas less than available during summer and fall, but used disturbed habitats more than available …

The focus of this study was to measure alpha and beta emissions of $\sp{210}$Po (alpha emissions), $\sp{210}$Pb and $\sp{210}$Bi (beta emissions) from brain samples which were obtained at autopsy from persons who were clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), or Controls (no known neurological diseases) and cigarette smokers (SMK). The samples were digested, processed and analyzed for alpha and beta emissions.Measurement of alpha and beta radiation activity in tissues can be used to demonstrate prior exposure of tissues to environmental radioisotopes and/or their decay products. As increasing numbers of physicians are being trained in specialized medicine and health professional shortage areas remain a common occurrence in the United States, the roles of physician assistants (PAs) in health services provision have become increasingly important, especially in rural/underserved areas of the country. By all accounts, there is a shortage of PAs in the U.S., particularly in rural areas. In response to demand, the number of PAs is projected to increase more than 70% by the year 2000, from its 1993 figure of 24,800 to 42,700.Recruitment is a critical issue in providing adequate health services in rural areas, …

The purpose of this study was to examine what occurs when poetry reading and writing are integrated with constructivist methods for teaching science in fifth-grade classes. The perceptions and responses of the students and their teacher during and after the lessons were primary concerns.A synthesis of the major findings from the literature review indicated that scientists and poets share curiosity, wonder, and the abilities to observe carefully and create accurate descriptions. Process approaches and emphasis on constructivist learning were teaching methods common to both areas. Breastfeeding has long been recognized as the preferred method of feeding. There is an increasing awareness of the need to return to traditions and values such as breastfeeding, which has been part of the Indian culture in the past. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to determine the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of breastfeeding among rural Native American women. Ajzen and Fishbein's (1080) Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Leininger’s theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality (1991) guided this study.

The United States is a multicultural place. With its ever increasing cultural and ethnic diversity, multicultural education is important. Since the visual arts have always been produced and perceived within cultures and offer students unique opportunities to explore human expression and experience, the analysis of an introductory art course taught within a multicultural context at a Midwestern university was a sensible starting point. Distribution And Success Of Galling Insects On Upland Willow (Salix Humilis) In Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Erik J. Harris

A comparison was made of the distribution of six galling insects on varying-sized shoots and different ages of their host plant, Salix humilis. Survivorship of the most numerous galler, Iteyomia salicifolia, was used to determine if host use patterns were correlated with galler success. In northern Minnesota, all six gallers were non-randomly distributed among shoots of different length; each occurred at greater numbers than expected on the longest shoots. Two of the six gallers were at higher densities on juvenile ramets of S. humilis, than on mature ones. Densities did not vary between juvenile and mature clones.

Involvement Of The Amino Terminal Of Actin In Actin-Aldolase Interactions., Tim Jeffrey Keith

Interactions between glycolytic enzymes and cytoskeletal proteins are electrostatic in nature. Studies conducted with derivatizing agents show that the amino side chains of basic amino acids on aldolase interact with carboxyl side chains of acidic amino acids on tubulin. In this study we used the techniques of covalent cross-linking, non-enzymatic cleavage and enzymatic cleavage to determine the amino acids in actin which are involved in the actin-aldolase interaction.Actin and aldolase were covalently cross-linked using the zero length cross-linker 1-ethyl-3- (3-dimethylaminopropyl) -carbodiimide to form a direct covalent link between the two proteins. This study examined the transformation process used by three North Dakota schools that previously operated as traditional junior high schools prior to changing to middle schools. The schools represented distinct situations in demographics, enrollment, and the process used to implement change. Through close inspection of three settings, I considered whether or not processes, problems, or successes common to all three schools existed. The most important questions dealt with the transition process used in each case and the result. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the Modified Interagency Arrangement Model and to add to the knowledge base about measurement of interagency collaboration. An instrument that would allow evaluation of the collaboration was developed. The characteristics of the instrument were investigated through a study of the North Dakota Early Childhood Tracking System (NDECTS) interagency arrangement structure. Validity of the instrument was examined by evaluating the modified IAM instrument's factor structure, content validity, and criterion-referenced validity.
