Depression is the primary mental health disorder in the elderly (people 65 years old and older). As the elderly are the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States, an increasing number of elders will be affected by this illness. The purpose of this study was to compare depression in the elderly between those who stay in the Midwest (Minnesota or North Dakota) year-round and those who travel south for all or part of the winter. This study investigated the effect of continuous passive motion (CPM) on the rehabilitation of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Over the years, CPM use in the treatment of TKA has been debated whether it is effective enough to justify the medical expense that accompanies it.

Sixteen subjects who underwent TKA surgery participated in the study. Twelve subjects were in the CPM group and four subjects were in the non-CPM group. Groups were determined by the surgeon's rehabilitation preference of using the CPM or not using the CPM.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating and life-threatening disease affecting millions of people in the United States yearly, but most notably menopausal females. The lowered estrogen levels associated with menopause increase the chances of developing osteoporosis. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been found to be one of the most beneficial therapies for slowing the progression of the disease. While some women are not candidates for this care and others take HRT solely for the relief of postmenopausal symptoms, studies have proven HRT has a long-term advantage against osteoporosis. The purpose of this study is to assess one component of the educational outcomes of the UND-PT curriculum. It is necessary to develop outcome assessment for many reasons. First, schools need to meet the needs of accreditation, such as the Committee on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education. Second, students need to meet the needs of employers and patients to provide quality care. Finally, physical therapy programs must meet the needs of the graduates, who are entitled to a quality education and must be competent in practicing physical therapy.

Characterization Of Hyporheic Zone Processes Of A Northern Prairie Stream, David B. Rush

A hyporheic zone occurs beneath and adjacent to streams where surface water and groundwater mix. This zone is known to be a reservoir for solutes and a habitat for interstitial organisms. Hyporheic zone boundaries in the Tongue River, North Dakota, were investigated through examination of the physicochemical and biological gradients present in the stream channel and bank sediments. The effects of cattle grazing at the streamside interface of the riparian zone were also examined at two locations to determine land use impacts on the hyporheic zone.

Anger is a dominant, but under-researched, emotion in our society. Mental health providers devote a considerable portion of their time to helping clients deal with anger. However, neither they nor researchers are able to say what treatment is most efficacious or for whom. Gender, age, and culture are all involved in the experience and expression of anger and how anger manifests itself differently among individuals, and possibly in how anger is interpreted by mental health providers. Characterization of the biochemical structure of cartilage and tendon has been a focus of research in recent decades, but little is known about joint capsules. Classified as dense irregular connective tissue, the extracellular matrix of joint capsules contains water, collagen, and non-collagenous macromolecules including proteoglycans (PGs), and glycoproteins, but specific biochemical composition of human glenohumeral joint capsule has not been elucidated. Aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and well done meat require host-mediated metabolic activation before initiating tumors in target organs. The N-acetyltransferase isozymes, NAT1 and NAT2, catalyze the activation (O-acetylation) of aromatic and heterocyclic amines and also the deactivation (N-acetylation) of aromatic amines. Both NAT1 and NAT2 are subject to genetic polymorphisms. Using molecular epidemiological studies, in vitro studies in human mammary tissues, and a genetically defined rapid and slow acetylator congenic hamster model, we tested our hypothesis that rapid NAT1 and/or NAT2 acetylators are at an increased risk of breast cancer, especially those women exposed to …
