Psychotherapy Integration: Examination Of Clinical Utilization, Gregory T. Tierney Aug 2002

Psychotherapy Integration: Examination Of Clinical Utilization, Gregory T. Tierney

Theses and Dissertations

Psychotherapy integration has been consistently found to be the modal or bimodal primary theoretical orientation explicitly reported by psychologists. Considering influences on the field of psychology, psychotherapy integration will likely remain a significant approach to psychotherapy for the foreseeable future. However, not much is known about the clinical application of psychotherapy integration. It is questionable whether current classifications of psychotherapy integration, including theoretical integration, eclecticism, and common factors, can adequately describe clinical approaches. The assessment of latent theoretical orientation, as a means of assessing primary theoretical orientation, is a promising way to examine the clinical use of psychotherapy integration. My …

Msl: Michif Sign Language-The Noun Phrases, Jacqueline Foster Ferraro Aug 2002

Msl: Michif Sign Language-The Noun Phrases, Jacqueline Foster Ferraro

Theses and Dissertations

By focusing on the noun portion of the conventional Michif sentence, consisting of Cree verb phrases with the intertwining of French noun phrases, the objective of this research is to attempt to reveal some novel parallels in languages, as an initial step in the process of understanding more about the genesis of Michif and American Sign Language. In examining the separate and individual histories and applications of French Sign Language (FSL), American Sign Language (ASL), North American Indian Sign Language (NAISL), and the Amerindian Michif Language, certain commonalities and parallels are indeed present, even transcending the boundaries of diverse races, …

Genetic Structure And Isolation By Distance In Napaea Dioica L. (Malvaceae): An Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation., Jonathan Paul Wenger Jun 2002

Genetic Structure And Isolation By Distance In Napaea Dioica L. (Malvaceae): An Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation., Jonathan Paul Wenger

Theses and Dissertations

Napaea dioica L. (Malvaceae) is a robust, dioecious perennial flowering plant that is endemic to the upper midwestem United States. Occurring exclusively on the floodplains o f small rivers, populations o f N. dioica are distributed discretely on a network o f riparian habitat throughout its range which is coincident with the southernmost margin o f the Wisconsinan continental glacier. Ten population o f N. dioica were sampled across the species geographic range and were assayed at four high resolution microsatellite marker loci to assess genetic diversity and population structure in relation to the riparian habitat network and the ecological …

Phenotypic Changes In Escherichia Coli Mrca (Pbp 1a) And Mrca-Yrfe-Yrff Mutants., Frances Carol Sailer Jun 2002

Phenotypic Changes In Escherichia Coli Mrca (Pbp 1a) And Mrca-Yrfe-Yrff Mutants., Frances Carol Sailer

Theses and Dissertations

Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), a set o f enzymes found in bacteria, are important in the latter stages o f cell wall (peptidoglycan) synthesis. To search for additional roles PBPs may have, Escherichia coli mutants lacking various combinations o f PBPs were screened for the following phenotypic changes: capsule production, responses to antibiotics, motility, biofilm formation, and utilization o f various carbon and nitrogen sources. The experiments described here focused on mutants lacking mrcA (encoding PBP la) and mrcA-yrfE-yrfF. Previously, every time a A(mrcA-yrfE-yrfF) mutant was constructed the strain became mucoid due to the production o f colanic acid which is …

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau May 2002

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians' “place” in the context of the Majority Culture has never been clear to either them or their non-Indian counterparts. Many authors of cross-cultural literature suggest the experience of “living with one foot in two canoes” is stressful, confusing, and can even lead to reduced life success and increased psychopathology. This study attempted to develop a factor-analytically devised inventory intended to aid in identification of bicultural identification in hopes it may contribute to greater understanding between cultural orientation and healthy or maladaptive American Indians' functioning.

One hundred and ninety-eight American Indian and Caucasian students and community members from four …

Attitudes And Beliefs About Obesity Among School Professionals Working With Adolescents, Kelli L. Jelsing May 2002

Attitudes And Beliefs About Obesity Among School Professionals Working With Adolescents, Kelli L. Jelsing

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the attitudes and beliefs about obesity held by school professionals working with adolescents in a primarily rural, Midwestern region of the United States. The concern is that school professionals most likely to interact with adolescents regarding obesity may hold negative attitudes and beliefs about obesity, thus creating a negative environment for obese adolescents. This study partially replicated an urban-based study by utilizing sections of the questionnaire related to attitudes and beliefs about obesity. Fifty-eight science, health, home economics, and physical education teachers, and school nurses, social workers, and counselors working with adolescents …

Identification Of The Interaction Between Gravin And {Mu}-Opioid Receptors, Meifang Liu May 2002

Identification Of The Interaction Between Gravin And {Mu}-Opioid Receptors, Meifang Liu

Theses and Dissertations

The phosphorylation and desensitization of G-protein coupled receptors involve several protein kinases. Two of the major ones are protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC). It has been reported that gravin, an A-kinase anchoring protein, plays a role in regulating p2-adrenergic receptor desensitization, resensitization, and internalization by recruiting both PKA and PKC, phosphatase, |3-arrestin, and clathrin to the receptor. Similarities between the regulation of p-opioid receptor and p2-adrenergic receptor suggest that a similar complex involving gravin may play a role in regulating p- opioid receptor signal transduction. To investigate this possibility, the current study examined the distribution of …

Perspective Of Traditional Elders On The Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, Serena Marsden-Koop

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a study of Native American traditional elders perspective of suicide on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota. Native American elders are viewed as spiritual leaders who have wisdom and knowledge. They are the ones people in the tribe turn to for guidance, healing, and information. This study looked at suicide causes and prevention focusing on a Native American Indian population. The data was gathered using an open-ended questionnaire. The study shows the themes that emerged based on the traditional elders responses. The themes were based on the number of responses to the questionnaire sections. The …

A Dramaturigal Approach To Margaret Edson's Wit, Bethany Jean Froelich May 2002

A Dramaturigal Approach To Margaret Edson's Wit, Bethany Jean Froelich

Theses and Dissertations

Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize winning play, Wit, centers on Vivian Bearing's struggle with a terminal disease in the last year of her life. Bearing, who is a Professor of English literature specializing in the "Holy Sonnets" of John Donne, has been diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. She agrees to be part of an experimental chemotherapy treatment. Throughout the play, Edson makes use of Donne's poetry and her own knowledge of cancer to create Vivian's journey as she lives the last few months of her life as a research subject. My dramaturgical approach to the play calls for research on …

Gap Junctional Responses To Increased Camp Levels In A Mouse Mammary Tumor Cell Line., Nancy Lee Traiser Apr 2002

Gap Junctional Responses To Increased Camp Levels In A Mouse Mammary Tumor Cell Line., Nancy Lee Traiser

Theses and Dissertations

The definitive actions o f 8-br-cAMP on connexin trafficking in a mouse mammary tumor cell line, MMT22, have not been fully characterized. In the current study, connexin/fluorescent fusion proteins (utilizing Cx26, Cx32, and Cx43 fused to EGFP or RFP) were assembled to investigate the reaction of several connexins to increased levels of 8-brcAMP. The second messenger, cAMP, has been postulated to pass through and regulate gap junctions, and to be important in the control of gap junctional permeability. In a number of instances, an increase in cAMP has been correlated with an increase in junctional permeability. It has been suggested …
