African American Female Professors' Experiences In An Historically Black College And University Organizational Culture, Nadine Edgerson May 2004

African American Female Professors' Experiences In An Historically Black College And University Organizational Culture, Nadine Edgerson

Theses and Dissertations

Academic culture has been described as the social or normative glue that holds organizations together and guides and shapes behavior. The majority of the research that has been conducted on this subject relates to predominantly White institutions and their predominant White male faculties. The purpose of this study was to provide an in-depth account of the workplace perceptions and experiences of seven tenure-track African American female faculty members at an historically Black college and university (HBCU).

This study was qualitative research in which subject data were obtained through a series of three consecutive interviews per study participant then coded and …

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne May 2004

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne

Theses and Dissertations

Black-tailed prairie dog* (Cynomyt ludlvicianus) are a keystone species that were once widespread throughout the Great Plains. Beginning in the 1900* however, black- tailed prairie dogs experienced serious reductions in range an numbers such that recent estimates suggest they inhabit only 2% of their historic range. As a result of the decline in numbers and range, black-tailed prairie dogs arc currently a candidate species for protection under the endangered species act. Because of the species’ status as a candidate species and their importance as a keystone species, conservation biologists and resource managers are interested in developing effective management approaches directed …

How Mom And Dad Use Crayons: A Study Of How Parents Perceive And Negotiate Racial Identity With Their Black And White Biracial Children, Ronald T. Ferguson Jr. May 2004

How Mom And Dad Use Crayons: A Study Of How Parents Perceive And Negotiate Racial Identity With Their Black And White Biracial Children, Ronald T. Ferguson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The exponential increase in interracial marriage has brought with it a group of biracial children who do not fit neatly into the current racial classification system. The purpose of this study was to understand the perception and the strategies parents take to negotiate identity with their children. Moreover, the desire is to also understand how they came to such perceptions, what those perceptions are, and how they may or may not affect what they do with their children.

This study involved 10 interracial couples that are parents of biracial children who are half African American and half European American. All …

Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker May 2004

Genetic Population Structure Of The Plains Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus (Spea) Bombifrons) On The Northern Plains, Todd Becker

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examined genetic population structure in spadefoot toads (Scaphiopus bombifrons) living in western North Dakota. Spadefoct toads have a very unique life history among amphibians. They are generally limited to being active only during nocturnal wet periods. Because of this, and other factors such as philopatry, it is expected that migration and dispersal rates should be relatively low. I hypothesize that this low rate of movement, along with fairly short dispersal distances when individuals do move, should lead to the structuring of genetic variation at relatively fine scales.

Five microsatellite loci were used to examine population structure …

Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions Of Humor Therapy In A Hospice Setting, Cynthia A. Stedje May 2004

Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions Of Humor Therapy In A Hospice Setting, Cynthia A. Stedje

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the therapeutic benefit oflaughter for the body, mind and spirit of hospice patients, and how hospice healthcare professionals perceive humor and if they find it as a beneficial therapy. This study identified the healthcare professionals' thoughts of humor use and perceived facilitators and barriers to its use. There are many opportunities for healthcare providers to use humor. Humor has been viewed as a social lubricant in situations that involve conditions associated with the physical, the psychological, and the sociological aspects of life. In order to understand humor and laughter, it should be …

A North Dakota Geology Field Trip Primer, Joseph H. Hartman Apr 2004

A North Dakota Geology Field Trip Primer, Joseph H. Hartman

Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications

The rocks containing vertebrate fossils in North Dakota represent an important archive of biological and geological events that took place from around 80 million years ago to the present (Figure 1). Although the record is not complete through this interval of time, significant exposures provide important sections of Earth’s geologic history (Figure 2). We continue to understand better how seas moved back and forth across North Dakota and the life that persisted in these seas and adjacent estuaries. The terrestrial habitats and river drainages that are recorded in nonmarine strata contain important insights into the patterns of dinosaur diversity up …

Characterizing A Rapid Extraction Apparatus For The Removal Of Vocs From Aqueous Samples And Interfacing It With Fast Analysis Systems Such As The Aromatic Specific Laser Ionization Detector., Melissa Jean Meyer Feb 2004

Characterizing A Rapid Extraction Apparatus For The Removal Of Vocs From Aqueous Samples And Interfacing It With Fast Analysis Systems Such As The Aromatic Specific Laser Ionization Detector., Melissa Jean Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an important analytical task because of the prevalence of these compounds and the detriment they pose to the environment and human health. There are many improvements that are possible in the extraction and detection steps of these analytes. This dissertation will focus on these improvements. In particular, an extraction apparatus was developed in our laboratory for the removal of VOCs from aqueous samples in less than one minute. Also, a detector that is highly selective for aromatic VOCs will be discussed in detail.

Extraction of VOCs from aqueous samples into the gas phase …

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling Feb 2004

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …
