Approximately 7 million of the nation's adults aged 65 years and older are affected by depression, which leaves them with persistent feeling of sadness, anxiety, emptiness hopelessness and pessimism. The purpose of this independent study is to provide a review of the literature of late life depression (LLD) in the context of chronic medical disorders and stressful life events, detection tools and methods of interventions. Evidence indicates that comorbid depression is often misdiagnosed and undertreated or not diagnosed at all in older adults. Vitamin D deficiency is a common health condition affecting a significant number of individuals throughout the world. For years vitamin D has generated interest in reducing osteoporosis because of its role in bone and calcium metabolism. Recently low concentrations have been linked to the development of several cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, atherosclerosis and peripheral arterial disease. The purpose of this article is to examine evidence regarding vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease and provide advanced practice nurses with recommendations regarding supplementation in those individuals with vitamin D deficiency and risk for development of cardiovascular disease.

Serious health consequences related to hypertension are amenable to lifestyle modifications. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to review the literature to determine evidence-based lifestyle recommendations in the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Searches were completed through Pub Med and CINAHL. Search terms included "blood pressure," "hypertension," "behavior modifications," and "lifestyle changes." Initial searches lead to the following primary topics of research: alcohol intake, food habits, sodium reduction, weight loss, exercise and behavior therapy. The findings of this literature review indicate that in the prevention and treatment of hypertension; alcohol intake should be reduced, a DASH style dietary pattern …

The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen to epidemic proportions in this country. American Indian youth are disproportionately affected by this epidemic and its comorbidities, like diabetes, when compared to whites, and even other minorities. There is no single determinant of cause. Currently interventions are focused at the individual, family, community and environmental levels. Perhaps the most important component in this epidemic, however, is being overlooked: the health status of the mother during pregnancy. Successful Career Attainment In Women Survivors Of Domestic Abuse: A Qualitative Study, Christine E. Even

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore experiences and perspectives of women survivors of domestic abuse regarding their successful career attainment. The Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method was used to analyze the data gathered from interviews with ten women survivors of domestic abuse who self identified as having successful careers. Each participant completed a semi-structured interview conducted via telephone. Specifically, questions were asked regarding participants' definitions of career success, their perceptions of their successfulness and satisfaction with their career, their perceived supports and barriers to their career success, how they felt their experiences of being in domestically abusive …

Almost everyone experiences negative stress in their lives; this study attempts to explore how Native Americans experience and cope with negative stress. The stress filled lives of Native Americans is well documented. Their lives are punctuated with injury, illness, death, dismembered relationships, and encounters with legal authorities. It is hypothesized in this study that there are major differences in the ways that Native Americans and White Americans cope with stress. Diabetes mellitus increases the risk for cardiovascular disease due, in part, to hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress. To investigate the potential for antioxidant protection of the vasculature, a transgenic mouse (Jtmt) that overexpresses the antioxidant metallothionein (MT) specifically in endothelial cells (EC) was produced. A 16kb transgene consisting of the murine Tie2 promoter and enhancer ligated to the human MTII gene was microinjected into FVB mouse embryos. Two founder mice, Jtmt1 and Jtmt4, produced transgenic progeny identified by PCR using human MTII primers. At 60 days of age, there were no distinguishable differences in phenotype, behavior, body and organ weights, and glucose …

Previous research has indicated that neuropsychological dysfunction and the experience of violence during childhood are linked to the acquisition and expression of aggressive behavior. How these variables interact to influence aggression has not been effectively established in the literature, however. This study provided a prospective examination of the relationships between EF, the experience of childhood abuse, and aggression. Based on responses on a pre-screening questionnaire that assessed EF (BRIEF-A), 101 participants at a Midwestern university were selected for inclusion in this study. This study demonstrates that 2 month old, female B10.T(6R) are highly resistant to systemic infection with the KIM5 strain of Yersinia pestis , and that B10.T(6R) mice become susceptible to Y. pestis infection by 5 months of age. In this study we infected both young (2 month) and middle-aged (5-12 month) B10.T(6R) with equal CFUs of Y. pestis. LD50 of young B10.T(6R) was ∼1.4 X 10 4 CFU, while middle-aged B10. T(6R) mice exhibited an LD50 of ∼60 CFU. An elevated bacterial burden was found in the spleens of middle-aged mice at 24 and 60 h and the livers at …

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is a highly pathogenic gram negative bacterium that attenuates the host immune response by translocating effector proteins, known as Yops, directly from the bacterial cytoplasm into the eukaryotic cell cytoplasm using a Type III secretion system. The Type III secretion system uses a polymerized needle to translocate Yops into the eukaryotic cell. This self-polymerizing needle is composed of YscF. YscF has been tested as a possible vaccine alternative to other subunit vaccines. Wild type YscF has been previously shown to provide a low amount of protection against challenge with Y. pestis. Reactions to spousal bereavement are very individualized; while a large majority of individuals are able to navigate their way through the bereavement process, there are a significant number who can’t. Individuals who suffer from complicated grief are thought to be essentially stuck in a chronic and intense state of mourning that lasts longer than six months post loss. As one would expect, adverse health outcomes are a consequence of untreated complicated grief. Residual cardiovascular risk is an issue for patients despite aggressive LDL-C lowering in intervention trials. Currently no guidelines are available for increasing HDL-C, an independent risk factor for coronary vascular disease. Niacin is the most potent drug available for raising plasma levels of HD L-C. A review of literature was conducted to determine if the addition of niacin to an established statin therapy would decrease residual cardiovascular risk. Key words used in multiple literature searches included the terms "dyslipidemias, Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA Reductase Inhibitors, cardiovascular diseases, niacin, cholesterol HDL, and cardiovascular risk". A concern for anesthesia providers is the risk of perioperative shock due to secondary adrenal insufficiency in patients receiving long-term glucocorticoid therapy who do not receive supplemental stress steroid coverage for surgery. Dexamethasone is currently used by anesthesia providers as a perioperative anti-inflammatory agent and as an antiemetic adjunct. Hydrocortisone is currently the most commonly used drug for bridging patients who have previously received long tem1 glucocorticoid therapy. The increased potency, duration of action, and antiemetic properties of dexamethasone may make it a desirable substitution for hydrocortisone .
