Social Cognitive Well-Being Model With Native American Students: Exploring Racial Identity And Internalized Racial Oppression, Megan Kay Smith

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, Lent’s (2004) social cognitive model of well-being (SCWB) was employed to examine the academic and social domain of satisfaction and life satisfaction with 121 Native American college students. They completed measures of positive affect, Native American identity, internalized racial oppression, and life satisfaction along with domain-specific (i.e., academic and social) self-efficacy, goal progress, and satisfaction. Using path analytic techniques, results indicated that the academic SCWB model was a close fit to data and the social SCWB model was a good fit to data. For both models, the relations among constructs accounted for large portions of variance for …

Mental Healthcare For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: A Call For Integrated Screening, Prevention And Intervention, Kirsten Nelson

Nursing Capstones

Adverse mental health outcomes comprise the leading complication of type 1 diabetes(TID)in children and adolescents(Cameron & Northam, 2012). Comorbid mental health conditions lead to decreased adherence, worsening glycemic control, increased family conflict, poor self-image, and decreased quality of life(QOL). Evidence shows20-50% of youth with TID sought mental healthcare over a five year period yet less than 4% received any form of care during that time(Cameron & Northam, 2012; Jaser, 2010). This literature review was based on review of a case involvinga10 year old male “Benji” whose mother brought him to clinic requesting a second opinion after seeking mental healthcare for …

Improvement In Heart Failure Management Through Implementation Of An Interdisciplinary Algorithm To Reduce 30 Day Hospital Re-Admission, Lindsey Whiting

Nursing Capstones

Heart failure (HF) is a progressive disease in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to support the body’s vital functions. Recent projections estimate that by the year 2030 the number of HF patients will increase by 46%, resulting in an increased financial strain on the health care system. In response to increasing health care costs the Hospital Re-Admission Reduction Program (HRRP) was implemented. The goal of the HRRP is to improve the quality of patient care by linking defined parameters of quality of patient care to the payment/reimbursement of health care providers and hospitals. A rural northern …

Improving Palliative Care Utilization Process: An Effort To Enhance Providers` Contribution, Orina Machoka

Nursing Capstones

Worldwide, an estimated 20 million people require palliative care. The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance has identified the need for palliative care has never been higher and is increasing at a rapid rate due to the world`s aging population, increase in cancer, and noncommunicable disease. Despite the increased need, the palliative care establishment has not been efficient in identifying patients who need palliative care. The use of a standardized screening process to assist in the timely identification of patients with palliative care needs is lacking, or in some cases, non-existent. At a Midwestern pain clinic lack of screening is causing a …

Aging In Place: Causes And Importance Of Fall Prevention Education, Molly Banks, Danielle Halstead, Mariah Leroux

Critically Appraised Topics

Falls are a significant concern for older community-dwelling adults’ ability to age in place, specifically those who aged 60 and older. Many factors contribute to the risk of falls in older adults that need to be addressed by health care facilities, home health providers, and caretakers. Occupational therapy has a role to educate older adults, as well as health care providers on how to prevent the risk factors of older adults and falls. The purpose of this CAT is to take a deeper look at why this population has so many falls and examine the research addressing education and risk …

The Long-Term Effects Of Parent Military Deployment On Perceived Parent/Child Relationship Quality, Timothy P. Pagano, Cindy L. Juntunen

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

There remains a paucity of research surrounding the potential long-term effects of parental military deployment. This article provides counselors with an ability to better understand the long-term implications of parental deployment on the parent/child relationship through qualitative interviews with the, now, young adults who experienced a parent’s deployment, using consensual qualitative research methodology. The study makes several contributions to the knowledge base. Utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, this study examined how adult children of deployed parents view their past and current parental relationships. Four domains emerged, including 1) factors impacting relationship with dad, 2) deployment cycle, 3) military culture, and …

Yes, (Most) Men Know What Rape Is: A Mixed-Methods Investigation Into College Men’S Definitions Of Rape, Jaclyn A. Siegel, Raeann E. Anderson, Kristin E. Silver, Tara L. Mitchell

Psychology Faculty Publications

Sexual violence, including rape, is a pervasive problem on college campuses in the United States. Although men perpetrate the majority of sexual violence, men’s attitudes, experiences, and perspectives are not typically included in research on rape and sexual violence. We addressed this empirical gap through our mixed-methods analysis of 365 young men’s definitions of the term “rape.” Our analysis via consensual qualitative research revealed that men’s definitions fit into nine primary domains: lack of consent, taken advantage of, sex, sexual activity, unwanted, gender/sex-specific, harm to victim, relationship, and emotional response, as well as a miscellaneous domain. Further, using chi square …

Predictors Of Professional Quality Of Life In Rural Nurses, Stephanie Deese Jan 2020

Predictors Of Professional Quality Of Life In Rural Nurses, Stephanie Deese

Theses and Dissertations

Worldwide nursing shortages have led to an increased burden on healthcare systems, and this is especially true in already underserved, remote, and rural areas, where access to healthcare is limited and the loss of highly-skilled nursing professionals is deeply-felt. Professional quality of life (ProQOL) has been studied as a major influence on nurses’ wellbeing, job satisfaction, burnout rates, turnover rates, and quality of care. While certain job-related factors that impact nurses’ ProQOL outcomes have been identified – excessive workload, exposure to trauma, financial strain due to low wages, lack of or over-emotional engagement in the workplace, individual disposition – certain …

Title: Occupational Therapy: Addressing Mental Health Needs in Permanent Supportive Housing

Introduction: The availability and implementation of occupational therapy services in supportive housing are limited. According to Schultheis (2018), out of the 550,000 people in America who experienced homelessness on a given night in 2017, 1 in 5 had a mental illness. Choy-Brown, Padgett, Smith, and Tiderington (2016) found that 92% of individuals with mental illness stated that secure housing was the foundation of their recovery. When housing acts as a cornerstone to recovery, it is important, as occupational therapists, to capitalize on the opportunity and resources stable housing provides …

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background Domestic violence is a public health concern that affects 43.6 million women, or greater than one in three women, each year in the United States (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence [NCADV], n.d.). Following experiences with domestic violence, victims endure various long-term physical and mental health challenges. These challenges negatively affect women’s abilities to carry out many daily occupations, as well as live independently. When a victim flees domestic violence, they often find themselves seeking support and safety from domestic violence shelters. These shelters are designed to focus on the victim’s immediate physical needs and less on their mental health …
