Exploration Of The Handling Qualities Of An Autonomous Unmanned Aircraft System Using A Grounded Theory Methodology Toward The Identification Of Characteristic Traits, Michael Mclean
Theses and Dissertations
This grounded theory study explores the handling qualities of an autonomous, large UAS based upon semi-structured interviews with eleven MQ-4C Triton air vehicle operators (AVO). Through inquiry into the tasks and difficulties experienced during operation of Triton, themes regarding the role of the AVO, the role of the automation, and the role of the interface were developed using the constant comparative method. Interconnections between the developed themes led to theory about the applicability of the handling quality framework to autonomous UAS, the tasks performed by the AVO, the human factors applied to AVO, and the relationship of the AVO to …
Determining Optimum Coal Bottom Ash Content For Sustainable Concrete Infrastructure, Samrawit Menda
Determining Optimum Coal Bottom Ash Content For Sustainable Concrete Infrastructure, Samrawit Menda
Theses and Dissertations
Concrete usage is increasing rapidly; subsequently, the industry's carbon footprint is increasing. Coal Bottom Ash (CBA)/Boiler Slag Bottom Ash (BS) is a byproduct of coal-burning power plants. This material can replace fine aggregate in concrete to reduce global natural material depletion. Using CBA/BS in the construction industry will reduce the technical and economic problems associated with power plants by reducing solid waste. This project's objective was to determine whether using new sustainable materials, such as CBA/BS, in concrete will reduce natural raw material usage and energy consumption. This study included three projects: comparing increased CBA/BS content to the three-control projects …

Geothermal Energy: Direct Use Application From Repurposed Oil And Gas Wells For Williston State College, Nnaemeka C. Ngobidi
Theses and Dissertations
This analysis of the logistics of repurposing plugged and abandoned oil wells for use in district heating indicates that it is economically feasible and provides a guide to inform the development of geothermal direct use in the Williston Basin. This study focused on Williston State College where data on campus infrastructure, heating and cooling loads, oil well status, and geothermal resource potential are available. I selected a PA well and an SWI well that lie within 2 km of the WSC campus for the production and injection wells for the analysis. The alternative to using PA wells, drilling a new …
Effects Of Small Molecule Fak Activators On Gastrointestinal Mucosal Healing, Sema Oncel
Effects Of Small Molecule Fak Activators On Gastrointestinal Mucosal Healing, Sema Oncel
Theses and Dissertations
Gastrointestinal (GI) ulcers are common worldwide. The persistence of noxious agents such as gastric acid, pepsin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease breaks down the mucosal barrier and causes mucosal injury in the GI tract. Currently available therapeutics such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2-antagonists), antibiotics, and corticosteroids all attempt to minimize injury by reducing the symptoms of GI pathology, however, they do not directly promote mucosal healing. NSAIDs increase the development of both upper and lower GI ulcers. PPIs ameliorate upper GI injury; however, PPIs actually worsen NSAID distal enteropathy by …
An Indepth Look On Earth-Anchoring Through Architectural Treatments To Mitigate Psychological And Psychosocial Issues During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Skye Elizabeth Schwartz
An Indepth Look On Earth-Anchoring Through Architectural Treatments To Mitigate Psychological And Psychosocial Issues During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Skye Elizabeth Schwartz
Theses and Dissertations
Astronauts' mental health is of significant concern for any spaceflight mission. For low-Earth orbit (LEO) spaceflights, crews are four to six hours away from home. They can still see planet Earth, and if there is an emergency, there are escape routes; however, when it comes to long-duration spaceflights millions of miles away from home, crews cannot see planet Earth, cannot turn around in an emergency and are on their own in a monotone and sterile environment. These desensitizing conditions directly impact astronauts’ psychological and psychosocial well-being. Crews must learn how to interact with each other for an extended period, considering …

An Investigation Of Hrrr-Simulated Convective Transport During Summer 2021, Devin Bissell
An Investigation Of Hrrr-Simulated Convective Transport During Summer 2021, Devin Bissell
Theses and Dissertations
Overshooting convection can significantly impact the chemical and radiative properties of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) through the transport of various chemical species. Most notably, these impacts include enhancement of stratospheric water vapor and introduction of ozone-depleting halogen compounds, which both have important impacts on climate change. Convective updrafts provide a mechanism for transporting lower-tropospheric air, containing much higher concentrations of these substances, into the UTLS on time scales and in extratropical locations that are not possible via large-scale circulations. Additionally, overshooting tops are often correlated with severe weather at the surface and their identification can aid in …
Indigeneity In Space Governance Discussions: Centering Indigenous Knowledges Beyond Earth, Erin Edwards
Indigeneity In Space Governance Discussions: Centering Indigenous Knowledges Beyond Earth, Erin Edwards
Theses and Dissertations
Space policy and space law are expanding fields given the recent boom of commercial space flight, yet we hear less about space governance. These conversations are happening, but the discussions generally replicate western democratic practice with little input from other knowledge traditions, despite recent socio-political strain seen in senior democracies. This work focusses the discussion on missing voices. Those of the many Indigenous cultures that have routinely been silenced from terrestrial governance discussions. These voices, however, reflect thousands of years of collective knowledge of managing societies in a holistic manner. Some of these societies have developed in areas considered extreme environments …
Will Communication Delays Impact Mission Controllers? An Investigation Of Mood, Performance, And Workload During Analog Missions, Madison Diamond
Will Communication Delays Impact Mission Controllers? An Investigation Of Mood, Performance, And Workload During Analog Missions, Madison Diamond
Theses and Dissertations
Mission Controllers (MCs) are responsible for ensuring astronauts remain safe and healthy, making them vital for successful human spaceflight missions. They are the main point of contact for crews in space and communicate frequently over the course of the day. On a mission to Mars, there will be as long as 22-minute one way communication delays between the ground and the crew, causing major changes to current communication infrastructures. Research has commenced on investigating how these communication delays will impact missions. However, thus far, this research has focused on the crew as their subjects, despite alluding to the potential consequences …
Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explored the development and initial validation of a measure of bystander intervention behaviors in situations of sexual assault. There is a gap in existing scales using a theoretical basis when measuring bystander behaviors. The scales that do exist focus primary on bystander attitudes and are not theory driven (Banyard et al., 2005; Banyard & Moynihan, 2008; Banyard, 2008; McMahon et al., 2011). Our purpose was to develop and provide initial norming and validity information for the Bystander Antecedent Scale (BAS). The BAS assesses the attitudes, social norms, and behavioral control people experience related to bystander’s behaviors when …
Multiple Surface Pipeline Leak Detection Using Real-Time Sensor Data Analysis, Francis Enejo Idachaba
Multiple Surface Pipeline Leak Detection Using Real-Time Sensor Data Analysis, Francis Enejo Idachaba
Theses and Dissertations
Pipelines enable the largest volume of both intra and international transportation of oil and gas and play critical roles in the energy sufficiency of countries. The biggest drawback with the use of pipelines for oil and gas transportation is the problem of oil spills whenever the pipelines lose containment. The severity of the oil spill on the environment is a function of the volume of the spill and this is a function of the time taken to detect the leak and contain the spill from the pipeline. A single leak on the Enbridge pipeline spilled 3.3 million liters into the …
Assessment Of Blood Pressure And Postural Control Mechanisms In Parkinson’S Disease During An Orthostatic Challenge, Rabie Fadil
Assessment Of Blood Pressure And Postural Control Mechanisms In Parkinson’S Disease During An Orthostatic Challenge, Rabie Fadil
Theses and Dissertations
Upon standing, 500–1000 mL of blood shifts from the central body compartments to the lower extremities and splanchnic circulation, leading to a decreased venous return to the heart, reduced cardiac output, and a consequent decline in blood pressure. In healthy individuals, the drop in blood pressure is quickly compensated via regulatory mechanisms. On the other hand, people with Parkinson’s disease may experience impaired reflex responses and a persistent drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension, OH), leading to visual disturbances, loss of consciousness, postural instability, and fainting. Parkinson’s disease patients have impaired balance and gait control as a symptom of the …

The Impact Of Fake-Bad And Fake-Good Responding On The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Fourth Edition (Mcmi-Iv), Michael Sasan Jowkar
Theses and Dissertations
The MCMI-IV is a personality scale that attempts to measure psychopathology as well as normal personality functioning. The MCMI-IV has a number of validity scales designed to measure over-reporting and under-reporting of psychological symptoms. No research has been done on the MCMI-IV’s ability to discriminate between respondents who are either over-reporting or under-reporting symptoms. Studies on previous versions of the test suggest elevations on the validity scale Y and elevations on personality scales 4, 5, and 7 in clients who are underreporting symptoms. Previous research also suggests elevations on the validity scale X and Z in clients who are over-reporting …
A Comparative Qualitative Case Study About The Role Of College Debt And Personal Finances In Career Experiences Of Higher Education Professional Staff, Renee Nilsen
Theses and Dissertations
As the cost of higher education has risen, partly due to the embrace of neoliberalism in higher education, students and families have faced a growing cost-sharing burden. Along with an increased demand for graduate education credentials, this trend has led to the growth of student loan debt in the United States. This narrative case study researched how personal finance situations have impacted the career experiences of people aged 28-40 who work as professional staff in higher education. Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model guided the design and analysis to capture the dynamics between the policy realms, institutional and industry career development provisions, and …

The data collection method included one-on-one interviews with ten recently …
The Financial Health Of R2, Land-Grant Universities: The Relationship Of Government Appropriations And Other Major Revenue Streams On Overall Financial Health, Aaron Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
College and university administrators must be able to process large amounts of financial information quickly and be able to communicate information about financial performance to governing boards. Financial ratio analysis provides a framework for administrators to identify financial and operational concerns as well as variances from institutional plans and policies. Modern financial ratio analysis in the higher education industry relies on a set of standard ratios that comprise the Composite Financial Index (CFI). With more frequent debilitating economic events such as the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic and the predicted enrollment cliff on the horizon, college and university administrators …
Stimulus Discrimination Training And Its Effects On Generalization Gradients, Christopher Veenstra
Stimulus Discrimination Training And Its Effects On Generalization Gradients, Christopher Veenstra
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptation-level theory has been used to explain how the size and shape of generalization gradients depend on the procedure used to study generalization. However, most of the empirical support for this theory has come from studies using a relatively simple stimulus dimension (e.g., lights that vary in brightness). In addition, much of the research has focused on one specific prediction of adaptation-level theory: that responding during a generalization test should shift towards intermediate values within the tested portion of the stimulus dimension. The present research used a more complex set of stimuli. Specifically, the stimulus dimension was based on bar …

Theses and Dissertations
RSV is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that infects our respiratory tract and can cause severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia worldwide. RSV bronchiolitis causes more fatalities in infants and newborns and leads to severe hospitalization and even death of children. The host-RSV interaction has yet to be explored properly to explain RSV bronchiolitis. This study aimed to elucidate the connection between the modulation of host actin cytoskeletal with viral pathogenesis, including bronchiolitis. As bronchial wall thickening is a common feature of bronchiolitis, the contribution of RSV-infected airway epithelium to bronchial wall thickening was evaluated. RSV infection in the healthy adult bronchial …
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Aviation safety culture research does not exist regarding the specific factors that either promote or discourage voluntary safety reporting among different frontline groups in U.S. Part 121 operations. Moreover, while safety culture has been shown to vary across workgroups, cross-sectional research across multiple aviation organizations regarding voluntary reporting is lacking. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing a sequential, confirmatory mixed methods approach. A 28-item survey was distributed to air traffic controllers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, and pilots. The instrument quantitatively assessed organizational safety values, reporting friction, previous reporting experience, just culture, and voluntary reporting …

Indigenizing The Outbreak Narrative: How Lee Maracle, Richard Van Camp, And Cherie Dimaline Critique Settler Colonialism And Medical Racism, Deanne Michelle Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation analyzes how Lee Maracle's Ravensong, Richard Van Camp's "I Am Filled with a Trembling Heart", and Cherie Dimaline's The Marrow Thieves critique the traditional outbreak narrative structures identified by Charles Rosenberg and Priscilla Wald. Specifically, these Indigenous texts decenter the microbe for a more miasmic perspective that takes into consideration how settler colonialism and medical racism complicates the disease experience and its social epidemic.
Possible Role Of The Storm-Generated Streamwise Vorticity In Tornado Intensification And Evolution, Lance Reed Wilson
Possible Role Of The Storm-Generated Streamwise Vorticity In Tornado Intensification And Evolution, Lance Reed Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Streamwise vorticity developing within the forward flank (FF) of supercell thunderstorms has been found to modulate the intensity of the low-level mesocyclone. However, few studies have quantitatively investigated FF vorticity contributions to low-level mesocyclone intensity. This study investigates the relative contribution of streamwise vorticity within the FF to the low-level mesocyclone strength using two Cloud Model 1 simulations with 75 m horizontal grid spacing initialized with the 18Z Jackson, MS, special sounding from the environment that produced the 27 April 2011 Tuscaloosa tornado. Vorticity budgets were calculated along forward trajectories that enter the low-level mesocyclone. Trajectories traversing through the FF …

To Stay Or Leave: Commitment Decisions Of Early-Career Faculty, Kevin Moberg
To Stay Or Leave: Commitment Decisions Of Early-Career Faculty, Kevin Moberg
Theses and Dissertations
While tenure-track job options have been decreasing in higher education, tenure remains one of the most influential variables in the faculty reward structure. This research project aimed to understand the experience of organizational commitment of early-career tenure-track faculty members prior to earning tenure. Particularly, the project investigated which factors such faculty members considered to be important when deciding to remain at or leave their university and how they applied their meanings of those factors in their decision making process of whether to commit to their institution of employment. The qualitative data for this project were collected through in-person interviews with …
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
Theses and Dissertations
The adrenergic system plays a key role in the treatment and understanding of the etiology of mental illnesses. Despite antidepressants having the effect of reducing the reuptake of specific neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine (NE), the mechanism of the antidepressant effect is poorly understood. It is apparent that antidepressants increase the rate of neurogenesis occurring within the hippocampal region of the brain with the hippocampus found to have an increased density around the time of symptom improvement (rate plateaus after 4-8 weeks after treatment). With an increased rate of neurogenesis taking ~1 month to occur, it was hypothesized that treatment with …
Generating Binder Inputs In Pavement Me For North Dakota’S Conditions, Andebut Tilahun Yeneneh
Generating Binder Inputs In Pavement Me For North Dakota’S Conditions, Andebut Tilahun Yeneneh
Theses and Dissertations
There is a broad consensus that the current mechanistic-empirical pavement design guideline (MEPDG) is an improvement from the earlier empirical-based design approaches. The lack of comprehensive material input databases for bound and unbound layers remains challenging. This study developed a database for binders used in typical hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixes in North Dakota by measuring their complex shear modulus (|G*|) and associated phase angle (δ) at unaged, short-term aged, and long-term aged conditions. Binder viscosity was also measured in these three aged states. Additionally, this study used existing models to predict (|G*|) and δ and compared them to measured …
Investigation Of Transient Multiphase Flow Performance In Undulating Horizontal Unconventional Wells, Youcef Khetib
Investigation Of Transient Multiphase Flow Performance In Undulating Horizontal Unconventional Wells, Youcef Khetib
Theses and Dissertations
Unconventional resources development was made possible by the combination of long horizontal wells and a multistage hydraulic fracture technique; this configuration enabled operators to reach economical flowrates besides the low permeabilities. For liquid rich basins like the Williston basin, the wells tend to show a high flow rate peaks during the first 24 months followed by a rapid decline and a relatively stable low flow rate and long period. Due to pressure decline liberating the dissolved gas and due to low flow velocities caused by low flowrate the wells flow intermittently, and oil, water and gas phases flow rates become …

Purpose: Prior literature illustrates that sexual minority people (e.g., bisexual, gay, queer) are at increased vulnerability for sexual violence victimization compared to heterosexual peers, including while in college. However, the study of sexual violence perpetration in sexual minority populations, much less specifically sexual minority college men, has been neglected. This article reviews the literature and presents a secondary data analysis of a systematic review on college men’s sexual perpetration rates and associated methodology. We also conducted analyses to summarize available literature regarding publishing dates, authors, and data inclusivity. Methods: We downloaded the dataset and associated materials from Mendeley.com’s data archive. …
