Via-Is-M And Latinx Cultural Strengths: A Study Validation & Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Caroline Perez
Via-Is-M And Latinx Cultural Strengths: A Study Validation & Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Caroline Perez
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study, and its focus on Latinx adults is two-fold: to validate the VIA-IS-M in a US-Latinx sample, and to explore whether Latinx cultural values of personalismo, familismo, and religiosity converge conceptually with the virtues within the VIA-IS-M. The proposed survey uses positive psychology as the theoretical basis (Parks & Biswas-Diener, 2013). A pull within the positive psychological research is addressed, specifically the merits of cultural transcendence or cultural integration (Jeglic, Miranda, & Polanco-Roman, 2016). For many years now, a flagship survey tool by Peterson and Seligman (2004) called the Values-in-Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) has been …

Assessing Options For Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Increasing Energy Production From Municipal Solid Waste Utilizing Epa Models, Marcus Richburg
Assessing Options For Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Increasing Energy Production From Municipal Solid Waste Utilizing Epa Models, Marcus Richburg
Theses and Dissertations
The population of the planet surpassed the 8-billion-person mark in 2022, and the increase in population has brought about an increase in waste, both household and commercial. The municipal solid waste that is created is primarily stored in landfills, particularly in the United States. These landfills release methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, creating what is known as anthropogenic emissions, due to their being caused by man-made issues. These two primary gases, along with others, make up greenhouse gases, and their reduction is key to potentially reducing or even reversing the greenhouse effect. Total municipal solid waste generation in …

Risk Assessment And Geographic Impact Of Virtual Power Purchase Agreements And Unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates On Greenhouse Gas Abatement, Keyshon L. Bachus
Risk Assessment And Geographic Impact Of Virtual Power Purchase Agreements And Unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates On Greenhouse Gas Abatement, Keyshon L. Bachus
Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuel-generated energy consumption via electricity purchased by organizations makes up much of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Commercial and industrial users consume more than two-thirds of electricity. Companies with warehouses, offices, data centers, and other facilities that engage in industrial processes consume significant amounts of purchased energy to power their operations. Most organizations do not generate electricity or have operational control of their energy generation; instead, they purchase it from public utilities and other providers. Many organizations are making climate commitments to support the Paris Agreement’s Net-Zero pledge by reducing or offsetting their indirect “Scope 2” greenhouse emissions and …
Synthesis Of A Low-Cost And High-Performance Micro-Spherical Adsorbent For Co2 Capture: Performance Evaluation, Up-Scaling Assessment, Adsorption Kinetic, And Numerical Simulation, Abdelmalek Bellal
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the potential use of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) supported adsorbents for large-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) capture processes. The post-combustion carbon capture process, which operates independently of the upstream fuel combustion process and the CO2 partial pressure in the flue gas, is emphasized for its integration into conventional coal-fired power plants without extensive modifications. While mature aqueous amine facilities are the industry standard, drawbacks in the predominant monoethanolamine (MEA) technology, such as high energy dissipation and oxidative degradation, motivate the exploration of adsorbent-based processes.Various adsorbents, including K2CO3-supported ones, are considered promising due to their high theoretical CO2 capture capacity …

Effects Of Climate Extremes On Snow Processes And Modeled Recharge To A Shallow Aquifer, Julian Giannini Niewiaroski
Theses and Dissertations
The Northern Great Plains (NGP), which can be broadly defined as the portion of the Great Plains north of Nebraska, undergoes decadal-scale climatic change in the form of drought and deluge cycles. These are broad, long-term cycles, that are not always well-defined, as has been the case recently. Since 2012, there have been one or two dry years followed by one or two wet years. Conversely, before 2012, there was a well-defined wet period between 2005-2011, preceded by a well-defined dry period from 1999-2004. Understanding drought-deluge cycles is critical to predicting aquifer recharge and groundwater retention, which directly affects how …

Dyslexia And The Need For General Education Teacher Training, Sheeresa S. Begay
Theses and Dissertations
General education teachers are expected to provide instruction to and promote learning in all students within a general education classroom per state and federal mandates. These mandates ensure students with disabilities like dyslexia are given access to a general education classroom, curriculum, and materials, and provided with support through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan. However, general education teacher training and professional development programs have often been ineffectual in preparing general education teachers for delivering instruction to and promoting learning in individuals with dyslexia. As a result, many general education teachers are unprepared for supporting students with dyslexia …
Self-Identification From The Professional And Social Perspectives Of Flight, Carly Lane Crockett
Self-Identification From The Professional And Social Perspectives Of Flight, Carly Lane Crockett
Theses and Dissertations
The development of one’s identity is connected to the level of effort willing to be committed to goal achievement. Per Velleman (2006), what someone cares about, determines what they must do for survival (p.336). While identity has been dissected, the applicability of connection for social and professional ties within aviation has not been thoroughly processed. General aviation flying and that of airline pilots has been compared regarding skill and safety association, but not in identity construction. A population of airline pilots was researched, that may or may not have been actively participating GA, with attempt to establish factor recognition of …

Improved fog forecasting will allow for more timely dissemination of warnings, allowing operators to maximize operational time and to minimize flight cancellations. The impacts of grid spacing and microphysical parameterization were examined to study their influences on fog formation in the Weather Research and Forecasting numerical weather prediction model. An ensemble of forecasts was produced, wherein varying grid spacings (1 km and 0.333 m) were permuted with different microphysics schemes (single and double moment) for two different fog events. It was found that sub-kilometer grid spacing improved …
Exploring The Malleability Of The Zero-Sum Perspective Of Gender Status, Abigail Marie Kroke
Exploring The Malleability Of The Zero-Sum Perspective Of Gender Status, Abigail Marie Kroke
Theses and Dissertations
Gender equality has broad individual and societal benefits. However, research continues to show evidence of gender-related biases and barriers to equality. One such barrier is the zero-sum perspective (ZSP) of gender status: the belief that any gains by women coincides with equal costs to men. Prior research has focused on between-group differences in ZSP endorsement after receiving a threat to gender status (i.e., women outperforming men in some capacity). The current study aimed to expand upon past research through three main objectives: assessing the between- and within-group malleability of the ZSP of gender status by introducing a threat to gender …

Unitary Transformation And Trust-Region Optimization Of Localized Orbitals Using Riemannian Manifolds, Aliakbar Sepehri
Unitary Transformation And Trust-Region Optimization Of Localized Orbitals Using Riemannian Manifolds, Aliakbar Sepehri
Theses and Dissertations
The focal point of this dissertation is unitary transformation containing an important class of operators and their representations. The unitary operators hold a prominent position in quantum chemistry because they can be employed to describe transformations (rotations) between orthonormal bases and leave invariant essential properties of a system (e.g., trace of a matrix and inner product between two vectors). This dissertation investigates computational studies of both energy optimizing and non-optimizing unitary operators. Liberal use of elements of differential geometry is made, which allowed development of second-order (or Hessian) based approaches on a manifold. The study of unitary operators also provided …
The Experiences Of Black Male Teachers In International Schools In East And Southeast Asia, Myson Jonathan Sheppard
The Experiences Of Black Male Teachers In International Schools In East And Southeast Asia, Myson Jonathan Sheppard
Theses and Dissertations
Although substantive research examines the issues surrounding the lack of Black Male Teachers (BMTs) nationally, limited studies involve their experiences in international schools. This is troubling when juxtaposed with their experiences researched and documented during teacher training, hiring practices, and on the job in the U.S. Although the issue is complex, many stem from explicit and implicit racial discrimination from the white racial majority. Given the problems preservice and eventual BMTs face in the U.S., examining BMTs narratives in the international school industry was necessary. Kanter’s token theory suggests that any slice of a social group comprised below 15% of …
Studying Phase And Morphology Of Hydrocarbon Petrochemicals In Inorganic And Organic Microdroplets Using An Electrodynamic Balance, Fafa Tackie-Otoo
Studying Phase And Morphology Of Hydrocarbon Petrochemicals In Inorganic And Organic Microdroplets Using An Electrodynamic Balance, Fafa Tackie-Otoo
Theses and Dissertations
Wastewater from the petroleum industry contains large amounts of inorganic salts, hydrocarbons, mercaptans, oil and grease, phenols, and other organic chemicals. All these compounds can be found in highly complex solutions in the petroleum industry’s discharged water, and there is no common treatment method, which precludes reuse paths in other sectors such as irrigation of farmland. In order to reuse produced water, the water must be treated and these harmful chemicals must be removed. To treat and potentially reuse oily waste outside the energy sector, researchers typically use membrane technology, photocatalytic degradation, oxidation processes, electrochemical catalysis, and other methods. The …
A Multivariant Comparative Analysis Of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors And Their Role In Net Zero 2050, Cynthia Bradley Bryant
A Multivariant Comparative Analysis Of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors And Their Role In Net Zero 2050, Cynthia Bradley Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Climate Change is one of the world’s most urgent issues, and the ideas to reduce the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) from manmade sources needed to help resolve this plight. Globally, the production of electricity accounts for nearly 40% of all GHG emissions in 2022. The substitution of nuclear energy can reduce that number greatly. SMRs, or small modular nuclear reactors, are smaller than conventional nuclear reactors. They can be made on-site, assembled, and transported to their final destination. SMRs offer many advantages over traditional reactors. They are more cost-effective, safer, and more flexible.SMRs could be used to replace fossil …

Rare-earth elements (REE) are a set of elements with unique consumer applications that consist of the lanthanide series of elements which have the atomic numbers from 57 to 71 plus yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc). Because of their unique properties, REEs are used in a wide array of consumer goods, energy system components, and military defense applications, but currently the United States is 100% import-reliant on these critical materials, and the REE supply chain is considered an issue of national security. Coal and coal by-products have been identified as a promising alternative resource and a focus of much recent research …
The Challenge Of Predicting College Success In Male And Female Saudi Arabian Students: An Examination Of Whether High School Gpa, Qudrat, And Tahsili Are Effective Predictors, Omar J. Elmoussa
Theses and Dissertations
Albeit college success predictors such as hs-GPA, SAT I, and SAT II have been widely addressed in the literature, most of the studies have covered total scores and cognitive factors while barely investigating the potential interaction of demographic factors (e.g., STEM versus Non-STEM) and specific academic domains that might drive academic success (e.g., hs-Math and hs-English, university core courses). Most importantly, very little is known of predictors of academic success in institutions of the Global South that follow a US curriculum and pedagogy, including those of Saudi Arabia. The identification of predictors of college performance is important as it can …
