North Dakota And The Korean War, 1950-1951: A Study In Public Opinion, Michael R. Sponberg Aug 1969

North Dakota And The Korean War, 1950-1951: A Study In Public Opinion, Michael R. Sponberg

Theses and Dissertations

Frequently one hears reference to North Dakota the "isolationist state." Indeed, North Dakota's vociferous opposition to World Wars I and II and its Senator Gerald P. Nye's investigations of the munitions industry all warrant the description of North Dakota as an isolationist state. But what of the cold war period when the enemy was Asiatic rather than European? This study of the first year of the Korean War is an attempt to determine what North Dakotans thought about fighting a war in Asia.

The press which had been divided over the involvement of the United States in earlier wars now …

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Grand Forks Fitness Test As Administered To Forty-Two Central High School Boys, Julian M. Gulsvig Aug 1969

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Grand Forks Fitness Test As Administered To Forty-Two Central High School Boys, Julian M. Gulsvig

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of fitness exhibited by American men tested for induction into the military service prompted the development of fitness tests to assay the physical fitness of our nation's youth. The Grand Forks Test was designed to determine the level of fitness of the youth in the Grand Forks Public Schools. This study was formulated to determine the reliability and validity of the Grand Forks Fitness Test.

A stratified random sample of forty-two boys from Central High School completed the testing phase of this study. Each subject was tested on three consecutive mornings. The Grand Forks Test was administered the …

A Comparative Study Of Teacher Prepared And Commercially Purchased Transparencies In Industrial Arts Education, Larry J. Yetter Aug 1969

A Comparative Study Of Teacher Prepared And Commercially Purchased Transparencies In Industrial Arts Education, Larry J. Yetter

Theses and Dissertations

Most graphic arts laboratories in Industrial Arts Teacher Education Programs are equipped with darkroom, process camera and offset printing equipment. The utilization of this equipment for the production of overhead transparencies could update instructional materials for industrial arts courses.

Several processes for producing overhead transparencies were investigated by means of a documentary study of educational and industrial literature. The information gathered was then studied and experimentation was conducted to determine the feasibility of producing single color and multicolor transparencies in the graphic arts laboratory of the Industrial Arts Department.

The results of this study provided the following:

1. Technical information …

The Effects Of Heel Disks, Heel Bars And Conical Cleats On The Speed And Cutting Ability Of University Of North Dakota Football Players, James J. Driscoll

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to measure the effects of three different types of heel structures on the agility and cutting ability of University of North Dakota football players. The three types of heel structures used were regular conical cleats, heel disks and heel bars.

The test used in the study was the Dodging Test from Frederick V. Cozens' General Athletic Ability Test for College Men. It consists of running and dodging or cutting in and out among five hurdles placed at strategic points on five 3-toot lanes.

The subjects tested were the total population of the University of …

A Comparison Of Heart Rate Between Two Methods Of Survival, Lyall Glen Bennett Aug 1969

A Comparison Of Heart Rate Between Two Methods Of Survival, Lyall Glen Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in mean heart rate, if any between drown-proofing and supine floating.

Heart rate was recorded by the researcher by palpating the radial artery for one-half minute.

One group of ten subjects was used in this study. This group was tested in the spring of 1969. The subjects were tested twice with each session lasting one hour. During each session drownproofing and supine floating were each administered for one-half hour. The subjects were tested six times during each half hour session.

Comparisons were made between the mean differences for each method …

Physicians' Degree Of Concern As A Function Of Numerical Medical Information Indices, Frederick W. Theye Jun 1969

Physicians' Degree Of Concern As A Function Of Numerical Medical Information Indices, Frederick W. Theye

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was essentially exploratory and descriptive in purpose. Utilizing the direct scaling method of magnitude estimation (with assigned modulus) the study attempted to: (1) determine if lawful relationships existed between the clinical judgment of licensed physicians and the results from nine numerical medical information indices, and (2) to quantitatively describe such relationships.

It was believed that direct estimation methodologies have been shown through empirical studies to be superior to the psychophysical models of Fechner and Thurstone. Previous work has also illustrated that the power law of S. S. Stevens' has provided a powerful methodology in studying the topic …

Response And Associative Learning In Warmup, Allen Mayo Raffetto Jun 1969

Response And Associative Learning In Warmup, Allen Mayo Raffetto

Theses and Dissertations

Improvement in learning successive lists has been found in both serial and paired-associate verbal learning tasks. Both intrasession and intersession effects have been observed, although it is well established that intrasession effects are greater in magnitude. Intrasession improvement in learning successive verbal tasks has been called warmup. Earlier investigators (e.g., Heron, 1929; Irion, 1949; Thune, 1950) favored an explanation of warmup similar to that used in motor skills learning. They viewed warmup as postural and attentive changes taking place within a learning session. These changes were seen as nonassociative and temporary. Warmup was regarded as separate from intersession improvement, usually …

An Investigation Of A Structural Model Of Small Group Problem Solving, David Dwight Harshbarger Jun 1969

An Investigation Of A Structural Model Of Small Group Problem Solving, David Dwight Harshbarger

Theses and Dissertations

Past research on the nature of small group problem solving has led to contradictory findings. Using complex problems, Shaw (1954b) found a decentralized interaction structure, i.e.,a group arrangement in which group members can communicate freely, to be most effective in reaching accurate solutions. Mulder (1960), using Shaw's complex problems, found a centralized decision structure, i.e., a group arrangement in which decisions were made by a small proportion of group members, to be most effective in reaching accurate solutions. Hutte (1965), suggested greater accuracy was found when a decentralized decision structure was used in complex problem solving. In none of these …

The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Conflict And Active Participation As Methods Of Inducing The Conservation Of Substance, Leila K. Beard Jun 1969

The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Conflict And Active Participation As Methods Of Inducing The Conservation Of Substance, Leila K. Beard

Theses and Dissertations

This study was concerned with the possibility of training for conservation. With the component elements held constant across all groups, the effectiveness of two methods of presentation, cognitive conflict and active participation, were tested by a pretest-training-posttest procedure using a 2 x 2 design with a common control group. Within the treatment groups, a conflict presentation of addition-subtraction and perceptual components was contrasted with a non-conflict presentation of the same addition-subtraction and perceptual components, each in a separate series. An active manipulation procedure was contrasted with passive participation. Results indicated that conservation responses increased within the treatment groups significantly more …
