Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between high- and low-rated clinicians in the observed frequency of each of ten selected nonverbal behaviors. Student clinicians, who met certain criteria, were rated independently by two faculty members primarily responsible for supervision of clinicians. Based on these ratings, clinicians were ranked from high to low. The top thirty-three per cent and the lower thirty-three per cent of these clinicians served as the two groups of subjects for this study. The high-rated group was composed of eight clinicians and the low-rated group was composed of six clinicians for a total …

The Effect Of Alpha Brain-Wave Control On The Speech Of Two Adult Stutterers, Randall J. Bjork
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine, compare and describe the effect of alpha brain-wave conditioning upon the speech of two adult stutterers.
Five sessions of baserate measurement were followed by a sequence of conditioning sessions (in which an electronic brain-wave monitor was used to train subjects to control their alpha rhythms), after which the speech of the stutterers was re-evaluated by a procedure which was identical to the baserate procedure. The four speech activities which were investigated were: reading without feedback of alpha-band brain activity from the monitor, monologue without feedback from the monitor, reading with feedback from …
An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss
An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss
Theses and Dissertations
Experimental studies investigating the aversive imagery technique of Covert Sensitization as a cigarette smoking deterrent have not clearly testified to its effectiveness. They have either deviated from Cautela’s technique and/or confounded their results by adding other components to it.
The present study tested the hypothesis that the successful results of Covert Sensitization requires both therapist-administered treatment and instructions that Subjects (Ss) also self-administer treatment. The self-administered treatment (homework) consisted of Ss imagining Covert Sensitization scenes twice a day between meetings with the Experimenter (E).
Thirty-six habitual smokers were randomly assigned to one of three training groups; one group of twelve …

The Rating Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cartoons As A Function Of Repression-Sensitization, William J. Burns
The Rating Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cartoons As A Function Of Repression-Sensitization, William J. Burns
Theses and Dissertations
In the past ten years, since the revision of the Repression- Sensitization Scale (Byrne, Barry and Nelson, 1963) a growing number of investigators have attempted to relate the R-S scale to an approach- avoidance continuum of defensive behavior. The few studies that have used sexual stimuli to produce a threat response have not obtained very consistent results. The present study has focused on the relationship between the R-S scale and the humor rating of cartoons. Through the use of Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scores, repressors were differentiated into defensive and nondefensive.
The independent variable involved the presentation of two types of …
Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe
Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of Zinc Deficiency In Rats, Michael Charles Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
The studies presented below concern the physiological and behavioral effects of zinc deficiency. One group of dams were fed a zinc- deficient diet from the morning of day 14 to the morning of day 19 of the pregnancy. A second group was given the same amount of food as was eaten by their zinc-deficient counterpart (pair-fed) plus water containing 50 ppm zinc, thus they were not zinc-deficient but did experience starvation. A third group was fed the diet ad libitum and given the zinc-supplemented water. Dams' food intake, weight gain, food efficiency and pups per litter were determined. Pups' birth …

Cross Exercise: A Comparison Of Electromyographic Recordings During Maximal Static Performance Of The Vastus Lateralis Muscle, Jeffrey S. Monroe
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transient response of cross exercise during maximum static performance by electromyography. Thirty male athletes performed maximum static exercise at 115 degrees extension of the knee. Action potentials generated in this dominant exercising and nondominant, nonexercising vastus lateralis muscles were compared to determine whether or not the nonexercising muscle was affected during exercise.
Surface electrodes were attached to both vastus lateralis muscles. The muscular impulses were recorded on a Grass Five Polygraph. The amplitude of the EMG tracings were then measured to determine the relative quantity of stimulus that each muscle received …
The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie
The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of response cost on percentage of error production with children who misarticulate.
Six elementary school children enrolled in articulation therapy were selected as subjects. Baseline measures of target phoneme error production were obtained by having the subjects construct sentences, using words presented to them verbally by the experimenter.
The effect on percentage of error production of two different ratios of token gain to token loss and positive reinforcement alone was investigated. Also, the effects during extinction of the three different contingencies were studied. During the treatment sequence, subjects were placed …
