Thematic Content Analysis Exploring American Indian Suicidality, Todd E. Phelps
Thematic Content Analysis Exploring American Indian Suicidality, Todd E. Phelps
Theses and Dissertations
This research project aimed to explore the trajectory of suicide within one tribal nation, the Sioux. The researcher attempted to identify risk factor significance, create new factors current research may be lacking, and gain saturated context for suicide from Siouan-affiliated individuals. Suicidality was explored in two phases. Phase one required individual participants to classify and rank potential life stressors (PLS). Phase two included another round of classification in addition to thematic content analysis within an expert panelist setting. Phases were completed by three different panel groups. Panel one included individuals who have attempted suicide, panel two included a group of …

Understanding Students' Views Of Science Identity Development, Daphne E. Pedersen, Alena Kubatova, Rebecca Simmons
Understanding Students' Views Of Science Identity Development, Daphne E. Pedersen, Alena Kubatova, Rebecca Simmons
Biology Faculty Publications
Science identity is composed of three key components, including competence (possessing scientific knowledge), performance (the capacity to use scientific tools and language in appropriate settings), and recognition (earning validation from others in the field) (Carlone & Johnson, 2007). The significance of a strong science identity is in shaping a student’s future behavior, such as intent to graduate and pursue a STEM career (Chang et al., 2011; Chemers et al., 2011), which is particularly important for those with notable retention challenges within STEM like women, underrepresented minorities, first generation, and rural students (President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, 2012). …
An Indepth Look On Earth-Anchoring Through Architectural Treatments To Mitigate Psychological And Psychosocial Issues During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Skye Elizabeth Schwartz
An Indepth Look On Earth-Anchoring Through Architectural Treatments To Mitigate Psychological And Psychosocial Issues During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Skye Elizabeth Schwartz
Theses and Dissertations
Astronauts' mental health is of significant concern for any spaceflight mission. For low-Earth orbit (LEO) spaceflights, crews are four to six hours away from home. They can still see planet Earth, and if there is an emergency, there are escape routes; however, when it comes to long-duration spaceflights millions of miles away from home, crews cannot see planet Earth, cannot turn around in an emergency and are on their own in a monotone and sterile environment. These desensitizing conditions directly impact astronauts’ psychological and psychosocial well-being. Crews must learn how to interact with each other for an extended period, considering …
Evolutionary Cartographies Of Language Diversification: Quantitative Approaches To The Geolinguistic Mapping Of The Kayanic Languages (Central Borneo), Deandré A. Espree-Conaway
Evolutionary Cartographies Of Language Diversification: Quantitative Approaches To The Geolinguistic Mapping Of The Kayanic Languages (Central Borneo), Deandré A. Espree-Conaway
Theses and Dissertations
Why are there so many languages in the world and how did this diversity come about? Every day, humans around the world speak over 7,000 languages. One of the most impactful theories describing the processes and mechanisms of language diversification is that of the Linguistic Niche Hypothesis (Lupyan & Dale 2010). The Linguistic Niche Hypothesis suggests that languages adapt to their environments (Lupyan & Dale 2010: 1). Lupyan and Dale describe it, stating that "just as biological organisms are shaped by ecological niches, languages structures...adapt to the environment (niche) in which they are being learned and used" (2010: 1). Taking …
Will Communication Delays Impact Mission Controllers? An Investigation Of Mood, Performance, And Workload During Analog Missions, Madison Diamond
Will Communication Delays Impact Mission Controllers? An Investigation Of Mood, Performance, And Workload During Analog Missions, Madison Diamond
Theses and Dissertations
Mission Controllers (MCs) are responsible for ensuring astronauts remain safe and healthy, making them vital for successful human spaceflight missions. They are the main point of contact for crews in space and communicate frequently over the course of the day. On a mission to Mars, there will be as long as 22-minute one way communication delays between the ground and the crew, causing major changes to current communication infrastructures. Research has commenced on investigating how these communication delays will impact missions. However, thus far, this research has focused on the crew as their subjects, despite alluding to the potential consequences …
Modulation Of Monoamine Transporters By Palmitoylation In Human Health And Disease, Christopher Ryan Brown
Modulation Of Monoamine Transporters By Palmitoylation In Human Health And Disease, Christopher Ryan Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The projects discussed in this dissertation outline the physiologic consequences of S-palmitoylation, a lipid-based post-translational modification, on the serotonin and norepinephrine transporters (SERT and NET, respectively). SERT and NET are trans-membrane proteins that belong to the SLC6 family of secondary active transporters. During neuro- and neuro-hormonal transmission, SERT and NET utilize the differential ionic concentrations of the extracellular and intracellular spaces to remove their corresponding substrates (serotonin [5HT] and norepinephrine [NE]) from the extracellular space. Each monoamine modulates distinct and overlapping physiologic functions, with dysregulation driving the pathogenesis of neuro-cognitive, neuro-humoral, sympathetic, cardiac, and vascular diseases. Because of this, these …

Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explored the development and initial validation of a measure of bystander intervention behaviors in situations of sexual assault. There is a gap in existing scales using a theoretical basis when measuring bystander behaviors. The scales that do exist focus primary on bystander attitudes and are not theory driven (Banyard et al., 2005; Banyard & Moynihan, 2008; Banyard, 2008; McMahon et al., 2011). Our purpose was to develop and provide initial norming and validity information for the Bystander Antecedent Scale (BAS). The BAS assesses the attitudes, social norms, and behavioral control people experience related to bystander’s behaviors when …

The primary goals …
The Impact Of Fake-Bad And Fake-Good Responding On The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Fourth Edition (Mcmi-Iv), Michael Sasan Jowkar
The Impact Of Fake-Bad And Fake-Good Responding On The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Fourth Edition (Mcmi-Iv), Michael Sasan Jowkar
Theses and Dissertations
The MCMI-IV is a personality scale that attempts to measure psychopathology as well as normal personality functioning. The MCMI-IV has a number of validity scales designed to measure over-reporting and under-reporting of psychological symptoms. No research has been done on the MCMI-IV’s ability to discriminate between respondents who are either over-reporting or under-reporting symptoms. Studies on previous versions of the test suggest elevations on the validity scale Y and elevations on personality scales 4, 5, and 7 in clients who are underreporting symptoms. Previous research also suggests elevations on the validity scale X and Z in clients who are over-reporting …
Factors That Influence School Nurses' Intent To Report Child Maltreatment, Catherine M. Jordan
Factors That Influence School Nurses' Intent To Report Child Maltreatment, Catherine M. Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Child maltreatment is a global problem that causes harm to the well-being of a child that extends to adulthood. In the United States alone, there are 158,900 child victims in 2019 and 1,779 child fatalities. Despite national attention and the availability of child abuse education, the victimization statistics have remained essentially unchanged in the last 11 years. Nurses are mandated reporters of child maltreatment. School nurses are frequent observers in a child’s life, thus leaving them uniquely qualified for real-time assessment. The purpose of this study is to determine what factors correlate with the school nurse’s intent to report …
An Exploration Of Bisexual+ Women’S Preferences For Sexual Violence Vulnerability Reduction Interventions: A Multi-Ethnic, Multi-Racial Sample, Sara K. Kuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Bisexual women are disproportionately victimized by sexual violence due to minority stress. Understanding their acceptability of and preferences for sexual violence vulnerability reduction interventions is critical for successful prevention efforts. Self-report data was collected online from 240 ethnoracially- and gender-diverse bi+ women and 65 heterosexual, white cisgender women (controls). Bi+ women preferred bi+ inclusive interventions. The sole intervention found significantly acceptable for most bi+ women (62%) was a modified, bi+ inclusive Bringing in the Bystander®. Yet, most bi+ women ranked the Sexual Assault Risk and Alcohol Use Reduction Program and Brief Drinking Intervention as most preferred. The Hookup Reduction Intervention …

While tenure-track job options have been decreasing in higher education, tenure remains one of the most influential variables in the faculty reward structure. This research project aimed to understand the experience of organizational commitment of early-career tenure-track faculty members prior to earning tenure. Particularly, the project investigated which factors such faculty members considered to be important when deciding to remain at or leave their university and how they applied their meanings of those factors in their decision making process of whether to commit to their institution of employment. The qualitative data for this project were collected through in-person interviews with …
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Aviation safety culture research does not exist regarding the specific factors that either promote or discourage voluntary safety reporting among different frontline groups in U.S. Part 121 operations. Moreover, while safety culture has been shown to vary across workgroups, cross-sectional research across multiple aviation organizations regarding voluntary reporting is lacking. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing a sequential, confirmatory mixed methods approach. A 28-item survey was distributed to air traffic controllers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, and pilots. The instrument quantitatively assessed organizational safety values, reporting friction, previous reporting experience, just culture, and voluntary reporting …
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
Theses and Dissertations
The adrenergic system plays a key role in the treatment and understanding of the etiology of mental illnesses. Despite antidepressants having the effect of reducing the reuptake of specific neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine (NE), the mechanism of the antidepressant effect is poorly understood. It is apparent that antidepressants increase the rate of neurogenesis occurring within the hippocampal region of the brain with the hippocampus found to have an increased density around the time of symptom improvement (rate plateaus after 4-8 weeks after treatment). With an increased rate of neurogenesis taking ~1 month to occur, it was hypothesized that treatment with …

Indigenizing The Outbreak Narrative: How Lee Maracle, Richard Van Camp, And Cherie Dimaline Critique Settler Colonialism And Medical Racism, Deanne Michelle Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation analyzes how Lee Maracle's Ravensong, Richard Van Camp's "I Am Filled with a Trembling Heart", and Cherie Dimaline's The Marrow Thieves critique the traditional outbreak narrative structures identified by Charles Rosenberg and Priscilla Wald. Specifically, these Indigenous texts decenter the microbe for a more miasmic perspective that takes into consideration how settler colonialism and medical racism complicates the disease experience and its social epidemic.
Stimulus Discrimination Training And Its Effects On Generalization Gradients, Christopher Veenstra
Stimulus Discrimination Training And Its Effects On Generalization Gradients, Christopher Veenstra
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptation-level theory has been used to explain how the size and shape of generalization gradients depend on the procedure used to study generalization. However, most of the empirical support for this theory has come from studies using a relatively simple stimulus dimension (e.g., lights that vary in brightness). In addition, much of the research has focused on one specific prediction of adaptation-level theory: that responding during a generalization test should shift towards intermediate values within the tested portion of the stimulus dimension. The present research used a more complex set of stimuli. Specifically, the stimulus dimension was based on bar …
Exploration Of The Handling Qualities Of An Autonomous Unmanned Aircraft System Using A Grounded Theory Methodology Toward The Identification Of Characteristic Traits, Michael Mclean
Theses and Dissertations
This grounded theory study explores the handling qualities of an autonomous, large UAS based upon semi-structured interviews with eleven MQ-4C Triton air vehicle operators (AVO). Through inquiry into the tasks and difficulties experienced during operation of Triton, themes regarding the role of the AVO, the role of the automation, and the role of the interface were developed using the constant comparative method. Interconnections between the developed themes led to theory about the applicability of the handling quality framework to autonomous UAS, the tasks performed by the AVO, the human factors applied to AVO, and the relationship of the AVO to …

Purpose: Prior literature illustrates that sexual minority people (e.g., bisexual, gay, queer) are at increased vulnerability for sexual violence victimization compared to heterosexual peers, including while in college. However, the study of sexual violence perpetration in sexual minority populations, much less specifically sexual minority college men, has been neglected. This article reviews the literature and presents a secondary data analysis of a systematic review on college men’s sexual perpetration rates and associated methodology. We also conducted analyses to summarize available literature regarding publishing dates, authors, and data inclusivity. Methods: We downloaded the dataset and associated materials from Mendeley.com’s data archive. …

Marketing Faculty Publications
Experimental research methods have a long history across a number of different disciplines—including consumer research. Although experiments are just one of many alternative research methods, experiments are notable because they are the best way to establish causation. This makes experiments a powerful tool when researchers need to show cause and effect relationships. In this article, we provide best practices for implementing experimental research methods in consumer studies. Specifically, we discuss several important topics researchers need to consider when designing experiments, including developing hypotheses, operationalizing the variables (manipulated or measured), deciding on the research design (between-subjects, within-subjects, or mixed), selecting the …
