Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner Aug 1976

Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner

Theses and Dissertations

Bandura and his colleagues have demonstrated that modeling techniques using fearless "mastery" models can be useful in helping clients overcome irrational fears (Bandura, Grusec and Menlove, 1967; Bandura and Menlove, 1968; Bandura, Blanchard and Ritter, 1969). Later, Meichenbaum (1971) found that initially fearful "coping" models who gradually overcome their fear are more effective than mastery models. However, research on the effects of model status has not investigated coping models. The present study attempted to discern how model status influences the effectiveness of coping models.

Thirty-two female Introduction to psychology students who reported themselves to be speech anxious were asked to …

Affective Influences On Nonverbal Immediacy, Steven F. Dreyer Aug 1976

Affective Influences On Nonverbal Immediacy, Steven F. Dreyer

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focused on compensatory relationships among the nonverbal "immediacy" behaviors—interpersonal distance, gaze, trunk lean, and body orientation--which are hypothesized to be important in the communication of interpersonal attitudes (Mehrabian, 1972; Patterson, 1973). Argyle and Dean (1965) have proposed that in social situations there are both approach and avoidance forces (e.g., affilia- tive needs, fear of intimacy) which eventually balance at some level of mutual comfort for the interactants. Once a comfortable intimacy-equilibrium has been established, any change in immediacy by one interactant requires a compensatory adjustment by the other. Since distance, gaze, trunk lean, and body orientation are assumed …

Judgment Analysis And Learning Disabilities: An Empirical Procedure For Construct Explication, Walter S. Mabee Aug 1976

Judgment Analysis And Learning Disabilities: An Empirical Procedure For Construct Explication, Walter S. Mabee

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this study is the exp1ic ion of the learning disability (LD; construct. Construct explication is a process whereby an abstract variable is made explicit in terms of concrete variables. The purpose of this construct explication is to provide a description as opposed to a cause of the phenomena of learning disabilities.

Research: This study was designed to answer the following research questions: 1. Does a relationship exist between the selected profile variables and each criterion? Which variables are most useful for prediction by this group of LD specialists? 2. Does a relationship exist between the three …

Distinctive Personality And Discipline Characteristics Of Child-Neglecting Mothers, Robert J. Loveland Aug 1976

Distinctive Personality And Discipline Characteristics Of Child-Neglecting Mothers, Robert J. Loveland

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to investigate distinctive personality and discipline characteristics of mothers who physically neglect but do not physically abuse their children. An attempt was made to acceptably define the concept, to meet the need for information regarding a representative sample of child-neglecting mothers, and to test hypotheses of a psychological nature suggested by the literature.

There were ten mothers in the neglect group and ten in the reference group. Each of the neglectful mothers had been accused of failing to provide basic physical care for their children, and the group consisted of the ten most recent referrals …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder Aug 1976

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Ulrich and Flavell (1970) note that although aggression is more a problem today than it has ever been, and although there have been centuries of concern, little has been done to develop effective controls. One conceptual framework for explaining the occurrence and control of aggressive behavior is social learning theory. Bandura (1973) suggests that aggressive behaviors that are reinforced will be strengthened. Several studies with children support this notion (Cowan & Walters, 1963; Davitz, 1952, & Lovaas, 1961). Those aggressive behaviors that are punished or unrewarded will be weakened or eliminated. Hawkins, Peterson, Schweid, and Bijou (1966) suggested that extinction …

Development And Implementation Of An Inquiry-Oriented Mapping Curriculum In The Intermediate Grades, William Whitney Janeway Aug 1976

Development And Implementation Of An Inquiry-Oriented Mapping Curriculum In The Intermediate Grades, William Whitney Janeway

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to produce an inquiry-oriented curriculum in map making and map interpretation for the intermediate grades. The curriculum was fully developed on the basis of field testing during a pilot study.

To accomplish this goal, eight classrooms were selected to participate in an inquiry-oriented course in mapping. This pilot study involved nearly 200 students in two one-hour sessions per week for eight weeks. The experimenter conducted all of the teaching activities and kept a detailed journal of observations, updated immediately after each session. Evaluation and modification of activities took place throughout the study. This …

Effects Of Psychodrama On Self-Actualization And Perceived Locus Of Control, Stanley W. Rosenthal Aug 1976

Effects Of Psychodrama On Self-Actualization And Perceived Locus Of Control, Stanley W. Rosenthal

Theses and Dissertations

Despite psychodrama’s popularity as a clinical procedure, few adequately controlled outcome studies have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine whether participants in short-term psycho drama groups, relative to controls would show greater change in selfactualization, locus-of-control, and positive "back-home" behavior reported by significant others. Since protagonists emerged spontaneously from their groups, it was also possible to: (a) determine whether protagonists gained more from the psychodrama experience than less active group members, and (b) identify personality and demographic characteristics associated with participants’ willingness to assume the protagonist role.

Forty-four volunteers from a university community were randomly assigned …

Group A consisted of 17 firefighters with six months to two years of continuous paid firefighting experience. Group B consisted of 17 firefighters with eight to eleven years of continuous paid firefighting experience. An air …

Verbal And Imaginal Mediation In Cognitive-Behavior Modification, Steven L. Shearer Aug 1976

Verbal And Imaginal Mediation In Cognitive-Behavior Modification, Steven L. Shearer

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a recent proliferation of outcorie research on cognitive-behavioral treatment packages; however, little attention has been directed toward investigating the active ingredients of such conglomerate packages. The present study was designed to investigate the relative contributions of verbal and imaginal cognitive mediators in reducing publicspeaking anxiety with other treatment factors held constant.

Therapists' manuals were constructed for the two tynes of intervention so that they were identical except for the focus on either verbal or imaginal mediation. The treatments drev/ from techniques suggested by Meichenbaum (1974a), Goldfried (1971), and Suinn (1975a; 1975b), but the parallel format of the …

Expectancy And Apparatus Placebo Effects In An Emg Feedback Task, Ryan Douglas Jagim Aug 1976

Expectancy And Apparatus Placebo Effects In An Emg Feedback Task, Ryan Douglas Jagim

Theses and Dissertations

Although both theoretical and clinical issues are being investigated in the area of biofeedback, the need for the delineation of the potent variables is evident. Research must be designed to separate out the nonspecific placebo factors which are involved in biofeedback procedures. The present study incorporates a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design to investigate the effects of two placebo variables--"expectancy of gain" and an apparatus placebo--on an electromyogram (EMG) feedback task.

Each of the forty-eight male undergraduate subjects had baseline EMG frontalis levels recorded. Two baseline periods were utilized to assess the before and after effe cts of …

The Effects Upon Specific Nonverbal Behaviors Of Focusing Student Clinician's Attention On These Behaviors Through Videotape Feedback And Instruction, Pamela Hagen Gudmundson Aug 1976

The Effects Upon Specific Nonverbal Behaviors Of Focusing Student Clinician's Attention On These Behaviors Through Videotape Feedback And Instruction, Pamela Hagen Gudmundson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if a systematic approach to the study of nonverbal movements through the use of videotape playback and instruction provides a useful procedure for teaching nonverbal patterns and actions to student clinicians.

Thirty female student clinicians who had completed between ten and 400 hours of clinical practice were divided into three groups and matched according to the number of practicum hours completed by each student.

Group I received a one-hour training session which involved viewing of their videotapes accompanied by verbal instructions to attend to specific, defined, nonverbal behaviors. Group II received a …

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to integrate the experiences that take place through in-school activities and the exper snces that take place elsewhere in orde' to make the si nts1 learning more educative. This can be accomplished through the velopment and implementation of experiential learning programs within the school setting.

This study was undertaken to develop a philosophical and theoretical foundation for experiential learning programs and to present postulates for the development and implementation of experiential learning programs in school settings. The philosophical and theoretical foundation has been developed in the theories of learning and experience of John Dewey. The postxilates …

Nonverbal Immediacy In Dyads As A Function Of Degree Of Acquaintance And Locus Of Control, Bryan D. Bartels Aug 1976

Nonverbal Immediacy In Dyads As A Function Of Degree Of Acquaintance And Locus Of Control, Bryan D. Bartels

Theses and Dissertations

Mehrabian (1971) has summarized evidence that nonverbal "immediacy" behaviors such as interpersonal distance, gaze, and shoulder orientation are important in communicating interpersonal attraction. Several authors (Duke & Nowicki, 1972; Efran, 1968; Efran & Broughton, 1966) have conceptualized nonverbal immediacy differences between friends and strangers within the context of Social Learning Theory (SLT). Duke and Nowicki, for example, proposed that interpersonal distancing is mediated by specific expectancies in interactions among friends, but by generalized expectancies, such as locus of control (Rotter, 1972), when interactions involve strangers. Some support for this hypothesis is provided by a study showing that locus of control …

The Measurement And Reporting Of Human Resources - Its Feasibility And Utility, Wesley J. Simonson Jul 1976

The Measurement And Reporting Of Human Resources - Its Feasibility And Utility, Wesley J. Simonson

Theses and Dissertations

Financial accounting is dynamic. It's generally accepted accounting principles are the result of an evolutionary process that can be expected to continue. Accounting is not an art which is an end in itself, rather it is an activity with a purpose. It is an information system whose principles change in response to changes in economic and social conditions, to new knowledge, and to demands of users for more serviceable financial information. Human Resource Accounting (H.R.A.) is a part of this evolutionary process. It is a response to a need for information in an area previously considered to be outside the …
