Proximal Muscle Weakness And Debility Secondary To Polymyositis: A Case Report, Adam Meidinger

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Polymyositis (PM) is the most common inflammatory myopathy in persons over age 50. It predominantly causes weakness at proximal musculature including the trunk, hips, thighs, shoulders, upper arms, and neck leading to challenges with ambulation and mobility, community activities, and difficulty swallowing, eating, and talking. Studies have shown physical therapy to be a staple in the plan of care for treatment of PM to aid in the restoration of muscle function and to improve or prevent further loss of strength. The purpose of this case report is to outline physical therapy's role in the treatment of a …

Development And Validation Of The Partners’ Approval Of Nonsexual Extradyadic Behaviors Scale, Lindsay Frances Kujawa Jan 2016

Development And Validation Of The Partners’ Approval Of Nonsexual Extradyadic Behaviors Scale, Lindsay Frances Kujawa

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the emergent norm in U.S. society for partnered individuals across all sexual orientations to possess both same-sex and cross-sex friends (Weis & Felton, 1987), and the relative complexity that comes with having friends who belong to the sex to which one is sexually attracted, the field is lagging in its ability to measure and better understand individuals’ attitudes about their partners’ engagement in the various behaviors of which these friendships are comprised. The existing scales of extradyadic behaviors are largely measuring individuals’ attitudes about engagement in sexual behaviors with cross-sex friends within the heterosexual population; therefore, they are inadequate …

Paul Scott's "The Jewel In The Crown": A Novelist's Philosophy Of History And The End Of The British Raj, Kathryn Ann Hughes Nedegaard Jan 2016

Paul Scott's "The Jewel In The Crown": A Novelist's Philosophy Of History And The End Of The British Raj, Kathryn Ann Hughes Nedegaard

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of Paul Scott’s best-known novel The Jewel in the Crown,

published in 1966. Scott noted that much of the research and writing on the British

Raj that ended in 1947, lacked an adequate understanding of the union that had

endured for more than three centuries. Scott believed too that many interpretations

of why the Raj ended relied too heavily on monolithic categories of “us and them”

and that they over-emphasized the socio-political and economic influences of

empire. He also believed that many scholars of the Raj ignored the love that existed

among all the people …

Purging Pathology And Interpersonal-Psychological Variables As Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation, Alexandra Thiel Jan 2016

Purging Pathology And Interpersonal-Psychological Variables As Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation, Alexandra Thiel

Theses and Dissertations

The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory on Suicidal Behavior (IPTS; Joiner,

2005; Joiner, Ribeiro, & Silva, 2012), proposes that active suicidal ideation is formed when an individual experiences high perceived burdensomeness, low perceived belongingness, and hopelessness (Joiner et al., 2012). Eating disorders (ED) are associated with high mortality rates from suicide (Harris & Barraclough, 1997), and recently researchers have begun applying IPTS to ED symptomatology (Smith et al., 2013; Dodd, Smith, & Bodell, 2014). In particular, purging-type EDs are associated with increased risk for suicide (Fedorowicz et al., 2007; Milos, Spindler, Hepp, & Schnyder, 2004; Protzky, van Heeringen, & Vervaet, 2014). Thus, the …

The Impact Of Power Status On Gender Stereotypes, Sexism, And Gender Discrimination Toward Women In The Workplace And The Career Identity Development Of Women, Juemei Yang Jan 2016

The Impact Of Power Status On Gender Stereotypes, Sexism, And Gender Discrimination Toward Women In The Workplace And The Career Identity Development Of Women, Juemei Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Women often experience unique barriers at workplace that hinder their career development (Whitley & Kite, 2010). In this study I focused on several of the barriers: gender stereotypes, sexism, and gender discrimination. Specifically, I examined the impact of career-related power, the gender of the perceiver, and the gender of the perceived on the endorsement of gender stereotypes, of sexist attitudes, and of gender discrimination. Significant results indicated that gender stereotypes and sexist attitude are most strongly endorsed by men with high power and women with low power. The largely insignificant results of discrimination also suggested that a climate change might …

Thinking Like A Nurse: The Impact Of Simulation And Clinical Experiences On Clinical Judgment In Prelicensure Nursing Students, Carol Ann Reid

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The ability to make sound clinical judgments is essential to safe nursing practice. Clinical experiences allow nursing students to integrate theory and practice and demonstrate clinical judgment. Simulation is being used by nursing programs to replace clinical experiences. Limited research is published regarding the effectiveness of simulation in the development of clinical judgment. This study explored differences in clinical judgment among nursing students in a maternal-newborn clinical course participating in simulation or hospital-based clinical experiences.

Methods: This study used Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR), based on Tanner’s Clinical Judgment Model, to evaluate nursing students’ clinical judgment following completion of …

The Impact Of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (Tavi) On Cognition: Evaluating The Relationship Between Changes In Cognitive Function, Cerebral Injury, Physical Ability, And Mood, Jaclyn Reckow Jan 2016

The Impact Of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (Tavi) On Cognition: Evaluating The Relationship Between Changes In Cognitive Function, Cerebral Injury, Physical Ability, And Mood, Jaclyn Reckow

Theses and Dissertations

Aortic stenosis is a cardiovascular disease affecting 2 to 4% of U.S. adults over

age 65 years old (Freeman & Otto, 2006). Aortic stenosis causes angina and syncope

eventually leading to heart failure and death (Otto, 2006). Transcatheter aortic valve

implantation (TAVI) is an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with

high surgical mortality risk (Kappetein, 2013). The TAVI is associated with increased

cerebral injury, with silent ischemia reported in up to 90% of TAVI patients (Samim et

al., 2015). The present study examines the relationship between cerebral injury, cognitive

changes, and quality of life in TAVI patients. …

Contraceptive Self-Efficacy: Educational And Familial Influences, Jenelle Suzan Swenberger Jan 2016

Contraceptive Self-Efficacy: Educational And Familial Influences, Jenelle Suzan Swenberger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines educational and familial influences on contraceptive self-efficacy among young adults. Self-efficacy theory states that beliefs about personal efficacy constitute the key factor behind human agency. Contraceptive self-efficacy refers to the belief in one’s ability to utilize contraceptives in a sexual situation. Based on previous literature it is expected that young adults who have had comprehensive reproductive health education, report higher levels of individual educational attainment, and report higher levels of mothers’ and fathers’ educational attainment will report higher levels of contraceptive self-efficacy. To test these associations, data from a stratified random sample of undergraduate students enrolled at …

Identity, Wellness, And Academics: A Move Toward A Freshmen Seminar For All Students, Matthew Torgerson

Theses and Dissertations

Using the Dana (2014) inquiry model, research was conducted to discover what traditional first-year students need to be successful in their academic careers. The research consists extensively of literature review along with casual conversations with faculty, staff, and students at a small, rural college in the Midwest. Through this research, identity development, wellness, and academics were found to be the most prevalent needs for freshmen success. This paper discusses each of these areas in depth as well as gives discussion and recommendations on how identity, wellness, and academics can be implemented into a first-year seminar curriculum.

Personality Disorder Trait Mediation Of Childhood Abuse Effects On Internalized And Externalized Symptoms Of Distress, Amy Catherine Veith Jan 2016

Personality Disorder Trait Mediation Of Childhood Abuse Effects On Internalized And Externalized Symptoms Of Distress, Amy Catherine Veith

Theses and Dissertations

The current study explored the relationships between childhood maltreatment indicators and mental health symptomatology in adulthood. Based on previous research, it was hypothesized that the indirect effects of child abuse on symptom expression as mediated by personality traits would be substantial and possibly larger than the direct effects alone. Additional abuse by trait interactions were examined. Results supported these hypotheses, specifically, the PID-5 trait factors were successful in accounting for a disproportionate amount of the variance in the criterion measures. These traits were substantially stronger than childhood physical abuse and domestic violence exposure. Childhood sexual abuse also outperformed childhood physical …
