Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Purpose/Hypothesis: High-intensity physical exercise has been shown to be beneficial in managing motor and nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Exercise may also have global effects on factors that influence brain health and cognition. Programs that incorporate goal-based motor skill learning have shown promise in being more effective than aerobic exercise alone. People with PD have a need for ongoing, continuous, community-based exercise programs that are engaging and accessible. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a community-based exercise program, Rock Steady Boxing, on improving quality of life and physical mobility skills in people with …

Obesity has become an epidemic across all ages, as the prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled over the last 40 years (World Health Organization, 2017-a). Obesity can have a detrimental impact on the health and future of Americans, as many diseases are correlated with obesity. Diabetes, which often occurs secondary to obesity and is the 7th leading cause of death in America, is similarly on the rise (CDC, 2012). To combat these issues, there is a great need for a health promotion initiative that provides individuals of all ages an opportunity to learn about health and wellness, to take steps …

Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs About Struggling Readers And Themselves, Katherine Brodeur, Lisa Ortmann
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This descriptive case study examines preservice teachers’ beliefs about themselves as teachers of reading as they develop identities for teaching through experiences in a Foundations of Literacy course and their tutoring relationships with elementary students during an accompanying practicum. As the preservice teachers learned about foundational literacy development and assessment, they came to understand some students as “struggling readers,” although their beliefs were not always grounded in assessment results. Practicum experiences both challenged and reinforced their existing beliefs about struggling readers, as well as their own sense of self-efficacy in responding to struggling readers’ needs. Findings suggest that the types …

The Heterogeneity Of Victim Impact Statements: A Content Analysis Of Capital Trial Sentencing Penalty Phase Transcripts, Bryan Myers, Narina Nuñez, Benjamin Wilkowski, Andre Kehn, Katheirne Dunn
Psychology Faculty Publications
Victim impact statements (VISs) are controversial in capital sentencing proceedings largely due to their questionable relevance to sentencing, the concern that characterizations of the victim may lead to arbitrary sentencing judgments, and the belief that the emotional nature of this evidence may be inflammatory. A sample of 192 capital trial VIS transcripts was analyzed for content as well as a linguistic analysis of emotionality. The findings reveal that these statements are highly varied, including their format, length, and relation between the witness and the victim. Despite a legislative mandate that they address the emotional, financial, and physical suffering experienced by …

The Psychometric Properties Of The Sexual Experiences Survey – Short Form Victimization (Ses-Sfv) And Characteristics Of Sexual Victimization Experiences In College Men, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill, Douglas L. Delahanty
Psychology Faculty Publications
Estimates of the rate of sexual victimization in college men vary wildly - likely due to the lack of validated measures. This study provides psychometric data on the Sexual Experiences Survey - Short Form Victimization (SES-SFV) and basic descriptive characteristics of sexual victimization of college men via the SES-SFV. Participants (n = 405) completed a web survey containing the study measures; a subset of 69 participants completed the SES-SFV again 1-3 weeks later. Convergent validity correlations were consistent but modest in size. Two-week test retest reliability estimates varied widely by the type of sexual victimization assessed and scoring format used; …
The Case Of The Missing Girl: Exploring Sex-Selective Abortion Through Ethnodrama, Hamzat Amoussa Koriko
The Case Of The Missing Girl: Exploring Sex-Selective Abortion Through Ethnodrama, Hamzat Amoussa Koriko
Theses and Dissertations
The study uses Ethnodrama to address sex-selective abortion in Armenia. Ethnodrama uses an ethnographic method of data collection, then presents the findings as a dramatic script or performance. The urgency and the sensitivity of the topic informed the choice of using Ethnodrama over conventional research methodologies. The study gathered data from three primary sources: government databases, international organizations working with non-governmental organizations, and ethnographic fieldwork. The fieldwork consisted of taking notes on daily observations during classroom activities, a personal journal on conversations and interaction with community members, stories from community members, informal questions and answers sessions, and a small ethnographic …
A Confucian Theory Of Crime, Nicholas Lassi
A Confucian Theory Of Crime, Nicholas Lassi
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an analysis of pre-Qin Confucian philosophy as it pertains to crime and the crime related issues of personal control and social control. From this analysis of pre-Qin Confucian philosophy, a wholly new and distinct theory of crime is developed. Material relating to crime, and the crime related issues involving personal control and social control, is filtered out of an assortment of prominent pre-Qin Confucian texts (namely those of Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi), dissected and juxtaposed with historical and modern Western criminological thought, and ultimately systematized into a unified Confucian theory of crime. This endeavor works to enrich …

The Impact Of Pre-Entry Attributes And College Experiences On Degree Attainment For Students In A Collegiate Flight Program, Andrew Leonard
Theses and Dissertations
The aviation industry is currently experiencing significant growth. While several challenges exist due to this increase in demand, a major issue facing the airlines is a lack of pilots. Today, collegiate aviation programs are one of the primary pipelines to train individuals seeking careers as commercial pilots. This study explored different variables that impact students' success or lack of success in graduating from a collegiate program. Furthermore, it looked at what collegiate flight programs can do to more effectively and efficiently train individuals seeking careers as commercial pilots.
It was determined that there is a significant relationship between certain attributes …
The Effect Of Sexually Objectifying Media And Social Threat On Sexual Coercion, Carissa Ann Malevich
The Effect Of Sexually Objectifying Media And Social Threat On Sexual Coercion, Carissa Ann Malevich
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual aggression researchers have struggled to find a specific profile of individuals likely to become sexually aggressive (Abbey, 2005). As most of the research has focused on internal personal characteristics, some researchers have called for more research into external or situational factors that may increase the likelihood for men to become sexual perpetrators (Farris, Viken & Treat, 2010). Thus, the current investigation sought to explore the impact of two promising external factors, sexually objectifying media and social threat, on sexual coercion proclivity. Sexual coercion is a much lesser studied form of sexual aggression but is very common and often normalized …
Claims Of Sexual Assault On College Campuses: Impact Of Educational Evidence & Victim Prototypicality On Attributions Of Blame, Heather J. O'Brien
Claims Of Sexual Assault On College Campuses: Impact Of Educational Evidence & Victim Prototypicality On Attributions Of Blame, Heather J. O'Brien
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual assault is one of the most prevalent but under-reported crimes in the United States and sexual assaults are even more common on college campuses (RAINN, 2016). Although both laws and campus student policies may be violated, very few perpetrators are ultimately punished (Lonsway & Archambault, 2012). Lack of investigation and prosecution of these cases may in part arise out of myths surrounding sexual assault. These myths may be challenged when scientific evidence is presented. Whether such evidence can undermine myths and prototypical notions of a sexual assault victim remains equivocal. To this end, the current study employed a 2 …
The Long-Term Effects Of Parental Military Deployment On Perceived Parent/Child Relationship Quality, Timothy Patrick Pagano
The Long-Term Effects Of Parental Military Deployment On Perceived Parent/Child Relationship Quality, Timothy Patrick Pagano
Theses and Dissertations
The lived experiences of children who go through parental military deployment remain largely unexamined. Although the literature surrounding this population continues to expand, there remains a paucity of research surrounding the potential long-term effects of a parent's military deployment. The following study aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the possible long-term effects of parental deployment on the parent/child relationship. The study makes several noteworthy contributions to the knowledge base. Utilizing Bronfenbrenner's (1979) Ecological Systems Theory, this study provides insight regarding how this population views their past and current parental relationships, the factors impacting the relationship with their formerly deployed …
Examining Rural To Urban Migration, Crime And Characteristics Of Rural Migrants Offenders -- An Exploratory Study On The Relationship Between Rural Migration And Criminal Offenses Utilizing The Online Judicial Dataset In Guangdong Province, Ziwei Qi
Theses and Dissertations
China has experienced massive internal migration in the past three decades. The rapidly growing urban population, especially the rural to urban migrant population, is the primary social concern with respect to public health and social stability that China is facing in recent decades. Both the public and private sectors have hastened to respond to the emerging needs of this socially, economically and politically marginalized group. In the current dissertation, the author utilizes judicial decisions from the Intermediate Level Courts in the Guangdong province, China, in order to examine the characteristics of rural migrant offenders, and to explore the relationship between …
The Effects Of Overnight Work Travel On Working Mothers And Fathers, Natalie Martinson
The Effects Of Overnight Work Travel On Working Mothers And Fathers, Natalie Martinson
Theses and Dissertations
Work-related travel has become more prevalent since the early 2000s due to the changing global economy (Jeong et al. 2013), and growth in job-related demands, such as traveling to meet customers, attend meetings, and participate in conferences (Gustafson 2006). Despite the benefits of overnight travel, there are drawbacks associated with traveling for work. Guided by role conflict theory and using secondary data from the 2008 National Study of the Changing Workforce, a subset of data was studied consisting of professional, managerial, and executive working mothers (N = 241) and working fathers (N = 257). This thesis considers how overnight work-related …
American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross
American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross
Theses and Dissertations
A time in American history existed when Native Americans were not allowed to express, much less retain their traditions, culture, language, and livelihood. Today, Natives are thriving in various fields at many different professional levels and have not only mastered majority cultureâs ways, but have integrated them, on their own terms, into their lives. Warfare was declared upon Native Americans in the educational arena beginning in the late 1800âs, resulting in many indigenous individuals not only meeting the educational challenge posed to them, but excelled beyond expectation. Thus, in contemporary society, many Native Americans have retained their traditional ways and …
The Predictive Validity Of The Static-99r And Stable-2007 In A Community Sample Of Sex Offenders, Amy Veith
The Predictive Validity Of The Static-99r And Stable-2007 In A Community Sample Of Sex Offenders, Amy Veith
Theses and Dissertations
The current study explored the accuracy of Static-99R and STABLE-2007 risk evaluations in predicting sex offender recidivism (n = 136) over an average 7.8 year follow-up period. These protocols are differentiated on the basis of their reliance on actuarial versus
dynamic risk factors respectively. The present analysis tested their predictive validity both independently and in combination with one another. It was hypothesized that the Static-99R and the STABLE-2007 would provide moderate predictive accuracy that would be enhanced by their combination. Support was not found for either hypothesis in regard to sexual recidivism, but the Static-99-R did show fair accuracy (AUC …
Online Resources And The Transgender Community, Mason Maxwell Wehse
Online Resources And The Transgender Community, Mason Maxwell Wehse
Theses and Dissertations
Transgender individuals are characterized by identifying as a gender other than the gender they were assigned at birth based on their biological sex (Meerwijk & Sevelius, 2017). Transgender identities can include being born female but identifying as male and vice versa. Identities can also include people who are non-binary meaning that they identify as a gender other than male or female, such as identifying as no gender (i.e., agender). Being transgender can be seen as controversial and there is a lot of misinformation and little formal research conducted on this topic. Because of this, transgender people often face discrimination and …
Quantifying Extravehicular Activity Performance Degradation Due To Sustenance Deprivation, Eryn Beisner
Quantifying Extravehicular Activity Performance Degradation Due To Sustenance Deprivation, Eryn Beisner
Theses and Dissertations
Modern EVAs (spacewalks) performed onboard the International Space Station require astronauts to endure up to twelve hours of intense mental and physical exertion without food, as they do not stop to eat nor do they currently have the capabilities to consume sustenance in their spacesuits. With the future of space exploration taking aim at the Moon, Mars, and beyond, EVAs are expected to become more demanding than ever. This is a pilot study to attempt to quantify astronaut performance during an EVA to determine if there is significant performance degradation because of acute starvation. Astronauts conducting EVA training at NASAâs …
Differentiating Active And Passive Fatigue States With The Use Of Electroencephalography, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
Differentiating Active And Passive Fatigue States With The Use Of Electroencephalography, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
Theses and Dissertations
With advances in automation technology, it is becoming essential to understand how automation affects human operators. A concern for the implementation of automation technology is the interactive effects it has with operator cognitive fatigue. Desmond and Hancock (2001) proposed that two types of fatigue can arise depending on the nature of the task: active and passive. Active fatigue results when operators must make constant perceptual-motor adjustments during high task demands, while passive fatigue results from operators executing little or no perceptual-motor adjustments during low task demands, similar to when automation is employed. The purpose of this study was to use …
The Impact Of Implicit Attitudes On Behavioral Intentions To Prevent Suicide, Julio Brionez
The Impact Of Implicit Attitudes On Behavioral Intentions To Prevent Suicide, Julio Brionez
Theses and Dissertations
The suicide rate in the United States of America continues to climb despite national strategies to reduce it (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention & National Center for Health Statistics, 2016; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Surgeon General & National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, 2012). What the strategies lack is mechanisms to target implicit attitudes (IAs) about suicide. This omission is important as IAs have been effective at predicting future suicide attempts (Nock et al., 2010). This study used an implicit association test of attitudes to suicide (IAT-SUICIDE) to examine IAs to suicide …
Characteristics Of Individuals Who Participate In Autoerotic Asphyxiation Practices: An Exploratory Study, Lauren Chapple
Characteristics Of Individuals Who Participate In Autoerotic Asphyxiation Practices: An Exploratory Study, Lauren Chapple
Theses and Dissertations
The set of behaviors known as Autoerotic Asphyxiation (AeA) have been studied, by contemporary scientific standards, for the better part of sixty years. Within that time, an inadequate amount of research has been completed on a far too narrow sample of the population, namely those who have died from the practice. AeA as a practice has been understudied to this point despite statistics that would note the potential for an unknown number of individuals to currently be practicing these behaviors. There is a paucity of both quantitative and qualitative data about living AeA practitioners. The present study uses Sex Positivity …
A Comparative Analysis Of Manned And Unmanned Aviators's Approach To Safety, Aaron Marlo Dahl
A Comparative Analysis Of Manned And Unmanned Aviators's Approach To Safety, Aaron Marlo Dahl
Theses and Dissertations
This study is an analysis of differences between unmanned and manned aviation
industry safety. A survey tool was used to collect safety perception, risk perception, and
organizational safety culture data from various individuals throughout the aviation
industry. In general, no difference existed between the unmanned and manned groups,
indicating an overall safe operating environment for aviators. While the results of this
limited study show no overall difference between groups, it provides a baseline study for
which future data, collected from a more mature industry, can be obtained.
The War After Battle: Morale, Post-Traumatic Stress And Long-Term Welfare Of Combat Soldiers, Corey Doan
The War After Battle: Morale, Post-Traumatic Stress And Long-Term Welfare Of Combat Soldiers, Corey Doan
Theses and Dissertations
There is a historical, literary, and philosophical record of the effects of combat on mental health. Modern psychological research has focused on the relationship between combat deployment and a litany of mental health issues which include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), various forms and manifestations of depression, substance abuse with a specific focus on alcohol, as well as social, family, and work-life functional impairment. This study introduces a customized 18-item Integrated Military Morale Questionnaire (IMMQ) which was designed to measure the proposed basic components of military morale: personal morale, cohesion, and esprit de corps. Data from 185 United States military members …
Critical Counseling Competencies For The English-Speaking Caribbean, Antonia Forbes
Critical Counseling Competencies For The English-Speaking Caribbean, Antonia Forbes
Theses and Dissertations
The development of competencies for counseling persons from varying cultures around the world is an important topic of discussion within the field of counseling psychology (Turner-Essel, & Waehler, 2009; Ng & Noonan, 2012; Gerstein & AEgisdottir, 2007). Mental health and socio-emotional needs know no geographical boundaries and as such require attention in many populations which have limited formal services for these concerns. If we are to follow the multicultural competence guidelines within our discipline (Sue, Arredondo & McDavis,1992; Vera & Speight, 2003) we must meet these needs in a way that first seeks to understand our clientsâ cultural backgrounds and …
