Mental Healthcare For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: A Call For Integrated Screening, Prevention And Intervention, Kirsten Nelson
Nursing Capstones
Adverse mental health outcomes comprise the leading complication of type 1 diabetes(TID)in children and adolescents(Cameron & Northam, 2012). Comorbid mental health conditions lead to decreased adherence, worsening glycemic control, increased family conflict, poor self-image, and decreased quality of life(QOL). Evidence shows20-50% of youth with TID sought mental healthcare over a five year period yet less than 4% received any form of care during that time(Cameron & Northam, 2012; Jaser, 2010). This literature review was based on review of a case involvinga10 year old male “Benji” whose mother brought him to clinic requesting a second opinion after seeking mental healthcare for …

Analysis Of A Modification To The Sexual Experiences Survey To Assess Intimate Partner Sexual Violence, Raeann E. Anderson, Samantha C. Holmes, Nicole L. Johnson, Dawn M. Johnson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Greater accuracy is needed in the assessment of sexual victimization that occurs in intimate relationships. Existing assessment strategies in the literature often represent two distinct approaches—intimate partner violence specific strategies vs. sexual violence specific strategies. The current study compared multiple distinct strategies for assessing intimate partner sexual victimization (IPSV) and evaluated a modification that optimizes intimate partner and sexual violence specific strategies. Two samples of undergraduate women were recruited. Sample 1 (N = 236) completed the Severity of Violence Against Women Scales (SVAWS) and a modified version Sexual Experiences Survey–Short Form Victimization (SES-SFV) in which participants were cued to …

Review Of The Status Of Oncologic Physical Therapy In North Dakota: A Definitive Study, Sarah Biberstine, Arianna Larson
Review Of The Status Of Oncologic Physical Therapy In North Dakota: A Definitive Study, Sarah Biberstine, Arianna Larson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose. Physical therapy is often reported as an under-utilized resource in oncology care. When utilized, physical therapy intervention addresses multi-dimensional symptoms experienced by individuals with a cancer diagnosis. This study examines the following questions: What is the status of physical therapy in North Dakota’s oncology team? What is the working knowledge of the physical therapist on oncologic rehabilitation? Do professional programs provide adequate knowledge to evaluate and treat oncologic patients and their symptoms? The purpose of the study is to determine if the physical therapy intervention received by individuals in North Dakota with a current of previous diagnosis …
A Case Report: Factors Influencing The Care Of A Critically Ill Patient In The Icu Following Medical Management Of A Benign Parasagittal Meningioma, Lucas Keller
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose. Primary brain tumors will affect 23,890 adults in the US in 2020. Many of these patients will require an intensive care unit (ICU) if resection is the chosen course of treatment. Early mobility has been shown to reduce negative effect of ICU stays in patient ability and long-term outcomes.
Case Description. This report describes the 4-week inpatient physical therapy management of a 69-year-old female who is 6 months post left cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and presented to the ICU with shortness of breath, severe continuous frontal headaches, and a reduction of regained strength from her CVA in …

Screening For Fibromyalgia In Patients With Chronic Widespread Pain, Justus Ongaga
Screening For Fibromyalgia In Patients With Chronic Widespread Pain, Justus Ongaga
Nursing Capstones
Background: Fibromyalgia has an estimated prevalence of 2% of the United States population, with a greater estimated prevalence among women (3.4%) than with men (0.5%). In addition to widespread pain, fibromyalgia symptoms include fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, memory problems, and numbness/tingling sensations. If the condition remains untreated or is poorly managed, then fibromyalgia can present problems among individuals, families, and communities. The lack in fibromyalgia screening processes at a Midwest Pain Clinic presented opportunity for the project.
Objectives: The purpose of this clinical project was to increase fibromyalgia screening by using the Fibromyalgia Rapid Screening Tool (FiRST) in …
Optimizing Outpatient Pediatric Clinic Visits For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Agnes F. Liem
Optimizing Outpatient Pediatric Clinic Visits For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Agnes F. Liem
Nursing Capstones
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) consists of several complex neurodevelopmental conditions that include deficits in communication, social functioning, and specific repetitive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Based on the services that they receive, parents’ perceptions of care for children with ASD elicit both positive and negative overall experiences during their pediatric outpatient clinic visits. Literature suggests caregivers identify PCP and clinic personnel’s lack of understanding or compassion for a child with ASD as a barrier. Additionally, caregivers identify more external concerns such as environmental stimuli and overstimulation, waiting too long, not knowing what will happen, and the physical examinations during the …
Effects Of Pole Walking On Adults With Parkinson's Disease Following 6 Weeks Of Training, Kathleen Dennison, Taylor Jamison
Effects Of Pole Walking On Adults With Parkinson's Disease Following 6 Weeks Of Training, Kathleen Dennison, Taylor Jamison
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Introduction: Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects motor planning and motor function. Symptoms associated with this disease include bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability. These symptoms are often accompanied by gait disturbances including decreased step length, arm swing, and gait velocity, as well as diminished trunk rotation and postural instability all which make functional mobility increasingly difficult. Conventional walking has been shown to be an effective physical activity to maintain mobility and improve function and overall fitness. Specifically, walking speed has been identified as a crucial predictor for fall risk which is why clinicians have …

Methamphetamine: A Potential Risk Factor For Neurodegenerative Conditions, Katelyn Sarlette
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Methamphetamine (METH) is a highly addictive substance that persists to be a major drug of abuse within the United States, particularly the Midwest regions. While some of the major health ramifications are well documented, its neurological impact is not fully understood. Neurodegenerative conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) continue to increase in frequency, particularly in the Midwest, yet there is no identifiable cause. The purpose of the study was to determine if METH use can contribute to the development of neurological conditions such as MS, PD, and ALS. A literature review was conducted …
