Celiac Disease: Advances In Diagnostic Testing?, Alicia A. Hanson
Celiac Disease: Advances In Diagnostic Testing?, Alicia A. Hanson
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
• Celiac disease (CD) is a gluten-sensitivity enteropathy that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals upon ingestion of gluten and resolves when gluten is withdrawn from one’s diet.
• Serological markers play a major role in the diagnosis of celiac disease, however a small intestinal biopsy is currently the gold standard in symptomatic individuals.
• The purpose of this study was to determine if serological testing alone is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis of CD and therefore eliminate the need for a biopsy.
• The review of literature explored studies that compared small intestinal biopsy with different serological testing in males …

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Pain induced by minor office procedures are associated with infant and family’s distress with possible long term psychological effects. Despite this known fact, it is not adequately treated in common practice. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends pre-procedural oral sucrose to alleviate pain during the procedures. The purpose of this study was to review published literature for the efficacy and safety of oral sucrose as a pre-procedural intervention in infants for mild to moderate procedural pain.
A PUBMED, MEDLINE and COCHRANE database search was performed using the terms analgesia, infant, neonatal, newborn, nociception, pain, sucrose and randomized controlled study. Thirteen …
Sarcopenia And Current Research Using Ames Dwarf Mice: A Research Study, Amanda Sodemann
Sarcopenia And Current Research Using Ames Dwarf Mice: A Research Study, Amanda Sodemann
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
This research project focused on the differences observed in muscle fiber composition and surface area between wild type mice and Ames dwarf mice as they aged. A mouse model was utilized because the skeletal muscle framework of mice closely resembles that of human muscle; thus, the observations seen within the mice may also be seen within humans as they age. Comparisons between the wild type and dwarf mice include a smaller cross-sectional muscle area in a dwarf mouse and no drastic change in the percentages of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers as the dwarf mouse ages. Furthermore, differences in …

Economic Attainment By Religion, Emma Wetten
Economic Attainment By Religion, Emma Wetten
Theses and Dissertations
Religion is an important determinant of the socioeconomic behavior of individuals. This thesis is an attempt to describe how various religious denominations in the United States have differing levels of education, different patterns in college degree attainment, and different household incomes even when certain demographic factors are controlled. This thesis describes differences in economic outcomes among religions and uses regression models of college attainment and average years of education with demographic controls including race, gender, region, and parents' educational attainment from the early 1980s through 2012. The results suggest that differences in economic attainment between American religious denominations in terms …

Songbird Response To Mixed Ungulate Herd Reduction Through Changes In Vegetation At Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, Bethany J. Walters
Theses and Dissertations
Big game management traditionally focused on single species management with less emphasis, until recently, on community interactions. Sullys Hill National Game Preserve (SHNGP) is a 678 hectare preserve where extirpated Plains bison (Bison bison) were reintroduced along with Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). These large ecosystem engineers have been managed at varying densities within a fenced area of deciduous woods, wetlands, and native prairie since 1918. Grazing, browsing, and rubbing by ungulates, along with additional refuge management prescriptions (e.g. prescribed fire), shape the understory and midstory and in turn …
Novel Approaches Investigating Predisposition For Maternal Group B Streptococcus Colonization, Michelle Lynn Wright
Novel Approaches Investigating Predisposition For Maternal Group B Streptococcus Colonization, Michelle Lynn Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of infectious neonatal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Maternal GBS colonization is the primary risk factor associated with neonatal infection. However, maternal risk factors for GBS colonization are ambiguous. A conceptual framework of gene-environment interactions guided the approach for this study analyzing DNA methylation, serum cytokines, and vitamin D levels. The purpose of this study was to identify potential maternal biomarkers associated with GBS colonization. Descriptive statistics were conducted to depict sample characteristics (n=42 pregnant women) and identify potential confounding variables including, but not limited to: medical history, race, weight, …
The Interplay Between Aging, Growth Hormone, The Methionine Pathway, And Epigenetic Methylation Marks And Mechanisms, Vanessa Louise Armstrong
The Interplay Between Aging, Growth Hormone, The Methionine Pathway, And Epigenetic Methylation Marks And Mechanisms, Vanessa Louise Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations
Methylation reactions are important for the establishment and maintenance of epigenetic methylation tags on DNA and histone molecules that are critical for the development and life-long function of an organism. While epigenetics has been studied extensively during embryological development and age-related disease such as cancer, little is known about whether epigenetic methylation enzyme expression change in normally aging or long-living mammals. Because growth hormone (GH) plays an important role in determining the lifespan of many organisms, we have focused our studies on the long-living growth hormone deficient model the Ames dwarf mouse. We focused our studies on epigenetic methylation in …

Measuring The Effect Of Weighted Devices On Exercise Enjoyment, Nicholas Kruse
Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity provides an important health benefit for both males and females. Seven out of every ten U.S. deaths are from chronic disease and many of those deaths could have been preventable. With a lack of physical activity and poor diet, chronic illnesses such as obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type II diabetes were reported, (CDC, 2004). There is a steep decline in exercise from high school to college, which indicates that exercise adherence in college students is an issue. In this study, three conditions were examined with students at the University of North Dakota going through a plyometric protocol …
