Genetic Analyses Of Captive And Wild Populations Of Hawaiian Geese., Elizabeth H. Rave
Genetic Analyses Of Captive And Wild Populations Of Hawaiian Geese., Elizabeth H. Rave
Theses and Dissertations
Preserving genetic diversity is important for maintaining the evolutionary potential and fitness of endangered species such as the Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis), or nene. I used DNA fingerprinting to assess genetic diversity in captive nene from Hawaii and England and in wild nene from Hawaii. I used pedigrees and DNA fingerprinting to assess the effects of inbreeding on reproductive success in captive nene. I determined (1) differences in mean similarity coefficients between unrelated and related nene within and between captive colonies and the relationship between coancestry and similarity coefficients in captive nene from Hawaii, (2) differences in mean similarity coefficients …

Morphological Evidence Of Apoptosis During Early Structural Luteolysis In The Golden Hamster, Matthew G. Friederichs
Morphological Evidence Of Apoptosis During Early Structural Luteolysis In The Golden Hamster, Matthew G. Friederichs
Theses and Dissertations
Structural luteolysis (SL) in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a remarkable event. The corpus luteum (CL) virtually disappears during a time span of 42 hours. SL begins around 0600 hours on day three of the cycle and is essentially complete by 2400 hours on day four of the cycle.
The purpose of this study was to determine when SL in the golden hamster actually begins and secondly to determine the way in which the three cell types involved in SL are depleted. The three cell types in question include luteal cells, endothelial cells, and neutrophils.
This study employed two …
The Lived Experience Of Caring And Knowing In Senior Nursing Students, Sherry Neil-Urban
The Lived Experience Of Caring And Knowing In Senior Nursing Students, Sherry Neil-Urban
Theses and Dissertations
Caring is identified as a central and defining feature of professional nursing. Yet, there is little explicit emphasis on the philosophy and substance of caring in the traditional nursing program. Rather, caring is subsumed by the pressing need to stay current with expanding definitions of nursing competence and increased knowledge required by licensing boards. The purpose of this phenomenological investigation was to better understand the lived experiences of caring and knowing as expressed by senior nursing students near completion of the nursing program. Eighteen sen ior nursing students, within one month of graduation, participated in this interview study in which …

Theses and Dissertations
This study examines reproductive patterns of two herds of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in contrasting and extreme environments, to look at the range of variability that exists in certain reproductive traits. Desert bighorn sheep (O. c. nelsoni) were studied in the River Mountains of Nevada, an area characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (O. c. canadensis) were studied in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico, an area characterized by cool, wet summers and cold, snowy winters. The objective of the study was to determine lamb production and survival, lamb birth dates, and postnatal maternal …
Self-Reported Risk Behaviors And Sexual Behaviors In North Dakota High School Juniors And Seniors, Vicki Wessman Downey
Self-Reported Risk Behaviors And Sexual Behaviors In North Dakota High School Juniors And Seniors, Vicki Wessman Downey
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents engage in many risk-taking behaviors, and these behaviors have significant potential for adverse medical and social outcomes. Risk taking among adolescents may or may not be deliberate. One theory of problem behavior suggests that alcohol use, drug use, delinquency, and sexual intercourse constitute a syndrome of deviate behaviors preceded by a psychosocial pattern of conventional attitudes. Because adolescence is a period of life characterized by constant change, rapid physical growth, emotional turmoil, and parental conflict, there are tendencies to experiment, seek independence, and indulge in adult privileges without the responsibilities.
Research suggests a direc relationship between risktaking and sexual …
Genetic, Structural, And Two-Dimensional Protein Electrophoretic Characterization Of Normal And Dek23 Mutant Embryogenesis In Maize (Zea Mays L.), Guy E. Farish
Theses and Dissertations
Embryogenesis in maize (Zea mays L.) is a genetically regulated process that gives rise to a large embryo with shoot and root apical meristems, a large scutellum, and five or six leaf primordia. An embryo-lethal defective kernel mutation dek23, located on chromosome arm 2L, affects the formation of the shoot apical meristem, coleoptilar ring, and leaf primordia in mutant embryos. Comparison of mutant and normal embryo development at the structural and biochemical levels should give insight into the role of the dek23 normal gene product in normal development. Fresh dissection, light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy of normal and mutant …

The Effect Of Traditional Versus Multimedia Augmented Instruction On Exposure Time Determination., Kathy Ann Smart
The Effect Of Traditional Versus Multimedia Augmented Instruction On Exposure Time Determination., Kathy Ann Smart
Theses and Dissertations
In introductory black-and-white photography course work, variables in laboratory methods for determination of exposure data often lead to low quality projection prints. Correct laboratory procedures are essential for results of minimization of error in print density. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of traditional instruction, and traditional instruction augmented by a multimedia module for psychomotor learning and to determine if academic level and previous experience had an effect on accuracy of density determination for photographic print. The experimental design of this study was a repeated measures post-test only design. The repeated measures effect had three levels, density …

Cardiac rehabilitation is the process of the development and maintenance of a desirable level of physical, social, occupational, and psychological functioning after the onset of cardiovascular illness. The scope of cardiac rehabilitation has evolved from what first began as strict bed rest to now a complete multidimensional approach including many health disciplines. The psychological aspects of rehabilitation have become just as integral as the physical components. Regaining a sense of control through a process of emotional adjustment is one of the important factors of psychological rehabilitation after a myocardial infarction.
The purpose of this study is to first examine different …
Resistance Training In Children, Debra L. Cutner
Resistance Training In Children, Debra L. Cutner
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Strength training in the child and adolescent has been a controversial topic for quite a few years. Current research has changed the thoughts of many professionals regarding strength gains or the possibility of strength gains in the prepubertal and adolescent age groups. Part of the controversy lies with the fact that some believe it is not safe for a child to do resistance training as it may cause various injuries such as musculoskeletal sprains and strains and epiphyseal fractures.
A review of the literature indicates that strength gains can occur in prepubertal children and that training with weights can be …

Physical Therapy And Internal Derangement Of The Temporomandibular Joint, Kathy Johnson
Physical Therapy And Internal Derangement Of The Temporomandibular Joint, Kathy Johnson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
In orthopedic literature, internal derangement is considered to be one of the main predisposing factors in the development of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and subsequent arthrosis. Internal derangement can be defined as the abnormal relationship of the articular disc to the condyle and consists of a multitude of disorders.
Physical therapy is well-recognized as an effective, conservative method of treatment for temporomandibular disorders. Early treatment to correct symptomatic internal derangement decreases the possibility of disc deformation and further joint degeneration. However, much of the physical therapy literature consists of uncontrolled case studies and focal clinical technique articles. For this reason, there …

A Literature Review Of Strengthening And Injury Prevention Techniques As Related To High School Athletes, Matthew Miller
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
In the U.S. an estimated 20-25 million youths participate in high school athletics yearly. Of these, nearly 30% will be forced to miss part or all of the season due to injury. It has been speculated that through proper training, many of the injuries seen may be reduced or eliminated. However, most coaches do not have an extensive anatomical and physiological background to provide athletes with these correct training techniques. Although athletic trainers have expertise in this area, they are only employed in approximately 10% of the high school systems in the U.S.
Much of the research to date on …
