The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System: Structural Integrity And Physiologic Function., Bartholomew Adam Pederson
The Glucose-6-Phosphatase System: Structural Integrity And Physiologic Function., Bartholomew Adam Pederson
Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase (Glc-6-Pase) (E.C. 3.1.9.3) plays a major role in the maintenance of blood glucose levels. Besides its classical role of hydrolyzing Glc-6-P, Glc-6-Pase also hydrolyzes mannose-6-phosphate (Man-6-P) and phosphorylates glucose via its biosynthetic activity. The enzyme is routinely studied in rat liver microsomes in the presence and absence of an activating/disrupting agent. The activator histone II-A reportedly increases Glc-6-Pase activity without destroying the microsomal membrane (St.-Denis et al. (1995) Biochem. J. 310, 221-224). We examined whether histone II-A disrupts microsomes by using the inhibitor N-bromoacetylethanolamine phosphate (BAEP). This compound inhibits Glc-6-Pase only in native microsomes. We found that …
Can Visuospatial Ability Predict Body Size Estimation Accuracy?, Paulette Marie Stronczek
Can Visuospatial Ability Predict Body Size Estimation Accuracy?, Paulette Marie Stronczek
Theses and Dissertations
The present study tested to see if there were relationships between the ability to estimate body size and other visual-spatial abilities. Fifty female undergraduates at the University of North Dakota who did not have eating disorders (as tested by the Eating Disorders Inventory (Garner, 1990)) were tested. They were asked to estimate the width of their shoulders, waist, hips, and thighs; the width of the shoulders, waist, hips, and thighs of a mannequin; the width of a file cabinet; and the width of a soup can. They did this with the Askevold method of estimation (1975) and the Ruff and …

Factors Influencing The Decision To Withdraw Mechanical Ventilation, Deborah D. Gengerke
Factors Influencing The Decision To Withdraw Mechanical Ventilation, Deborah D. Gengerke
Theses and Dissertations
Research reveals that the decision to withdraw life-sustaining medical treatment is commonly faced by surrogate decision makers of the critically ill. Factors noted to be considered by healthcare providers when addressing the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment include poor patient prognosis, poor patient quality of life should the patient survive, and the patient's previously expressed wishes regarding life sustaining treatment.
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that are present in surrogates' decisions to withdraw life-sustaining mechanical ventilation from the critically ill adult. The target population was 31 surrogate decision-makers who had agreed to withdraw life-sustaining mechanical …

Exploring Teacher Thinking About Practices In Inclusive Early Childhood Settings Through Case Study Method: Early Childhood And Early Childhood Special Educators' Perspectives, Karen R. Danbom
Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of the thinking and reasoning underlying the teaching practices of early childhood and early childhood special educators. It provides an opportunity to better understand the nature of teaching in integrated classrooms by understanding the knowledge, beliefs, and thoughts that inform practices of individual teachers. The thinking of teachers was studied as they were interviewed about situations in integrated classrooms and as they reflected on their own teaching of children with and without disabilities. The questions guiding this study were (a) How do early childhood educators and early childhood special educators reason and think through issues of …
Heatlh Education In The Postpartum Population Of The Native Americans On The Ft. Peck Reservation Following Early Postpartum Discharge, Debra Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Early postpartum discharge 24-48 hours after delivery has become a current trend in the United States. There are numerous and substantive issues relating to this concept which affect not only hospital personnel, but more specifically new mothers and babies.
On the Ft. Peck Reservation in northeast Montana the standard of early discharge postpartum has been initiated. The purpose of this study was to identify postpartum/newbom education deficits among the population of postpartum women on the Ft. Peck Reservation and to compare and contrast these results between the Poplar and Wolf Point. MT. communities. Additionally, the identification of the resources used …

A Modular Distributed Source Phantom For Whole-Body Counter Calibration., Liqiang Tao
A Modular Distributed Source Phantom For Whole-Body Counter Calibration., Liqiang Tao
Theses and Dissertations
"Fuzzy" is the radically new whole-body counter phantom concept that is based on how the human whole-body counter (HWBC) "sees" the inhomogeneous radionuclide distribution within the 3D shape of the human body. "Fuzzy" is used in conjunction with locally placed external detectors. "Fuzzy" is placed on a plastic board 1.91 m long and 0.64 m wide that is divided into 75 equal squares (163 cm$\sp2$ each) which are organized in five columns (A-E) and fifteen rows from head to toe (1-15). To comply with the two fold symmetry of the human body, "Fuzzy" is divided by the Golden section (37.5% …
Use Of Cultivated Wild Rice Paddies And Associated Habitats By Migrating And Breeding Waterfowl In Northwest Minnesota., Jay Thor Huseby
Use Of Cultivated Wild Rice Paddies And Associated Habitats By Migrating And Breeding Waterfowl In Northwest Minnesota., Jay Thor Huseby
Theses and Dissertations
A primary concern for wildlife managers is continued loss and modification of natural habitats and the resulting impacts on natural populations. If habitat alteration continues, more wildlife species will be using affected landscapes, and it will be increasingly important to understand wildlife biology in manipulated environments. I studied use of cultivated wild rice (Zizania palustris) paddies and associated habitats by waterfowl in northwest Minnesota (1993-1995) to evaluate their potential as migration, nesting, and brood-rearing habitat.I censused migrants using paddies during spring and fall and quantified availability of waterfowl food items collected from samples of paddy substrate. Eighteen species and 22.49 …
