Stroke Survivors’ And Informal Caregivers’ Perceptions Of Depressive Symptoms After Stroke: A Mixed-Methods Sequential Explanatory Study, Tanya Leigh Breckenridge-Trotter

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Poststroke depression (PSD) is a frequently occurring complication of stroke that affects up to 30% of all stroke survivors in the first 24 months after stroke. PSD has been correlated with increases in hospital length of stay and hospital costs, increased physical morbidity and mortality, the risk for recurrent stroke at one year, decreased functional outcome, decreased cognitive function, and decreased quality of life post stroke. Estimates are >50% stroke survivors with depressive symptoms are left untreated due to lack of recognition. Moreover, depression in family caregivers of stroke survivors may negatively influence stroke recovery and stroke survivor quality …

Self-Efficacy Of Applied Doctoral Students Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Kylie Anne George

Theses and Dissertations

The present study explored the development and initial validation of a measure of doctoral student self-efficacy for students in Health Profession Training (HPT) programs. There is a gap in existing scales that measure the full spectrum of tasks that contribute to doctoral self-efficacy. The scales that do exist focus on broad self-efficacy (Chen et al., 2001) or program-specific self-efficacy in one area (Stump et al., 2012; Van Horn & Christman, 2017; Lent et al., 2003). Our purpose was to develop and provide initial norming and validity information for the Self-Efficacy of Applied Doctoral Students (SEADS) Scale. The SEADS was developed …

The Effects Of Demographic And Nutritional Variables On Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In Usa And Non-Usa Adults, Jonathan Santiago

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects of demographic variables (e.g. country of residence and socioeconomic status) and nutritional variables (e.g. dietary diversity and micronutrient content) on anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as subjective health self-rating. Prior research suggests that a variety of demographic and nutritional factors influence chronic stress, which can cause systemic inflammation and lead to various cardiovascular-related diseases. Participants (USA=41; Non-USA= 58) were recruited via an online platform and completed demographic questionnaires and a 24-hour dietary recall. Results indicated that food accessibility emerged as the strongest predictor, and was associated with anxiety, depression, and combined mood symptoms. …

Modulation Of Monoamine Transporters By Palmitoylation In Human Health And Disease, Christopher Ryan Brown Dec 2022

Modulation Of Monoamine Transporters By Palmitoylation In Human Health And Disease, Christopher Ryan Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The projects discussed in this dissertation outline the physiologic consequences of S-palmitoylation, a lipid-based post-translational modification, on the serotonin and norepinephrine transporters (SERT and NET, respectively). SERT and NET are trans-membrane proteins that belong to the SLC6 family of secondary active transporters. During neuro- and neuro-hormonal transmission, SERT and NET utilize the differential ionic concentrations of the extracellular and intracellular spaces to remove their corresponding substrates (serotonin [5HT] and norepinephrine [NE]) from the extracellular space. Each monoamine modulates distinct and overlapping physiologic functions, with dysregulation driving the pathogenesis of neuro-cognitive, neuro-humoral, sympathetic, cardiac, and vascular diseases. Because of this, these …

Whole Fruit Consumption, 100% Fruit Juice Consumption, And Cardiovascular Disease (Cvd) In U.S. Adults: Analysis Of 2019 Brfss, Brendan James Kesler Dec 2022

Whole Fruit Consumption, 100% Fruit Juice Consumption, And Cardiovascular Disease (Cvd) In U.S. Adults: Analysis Of 2019 Brfss, Brendan James Kesler

Theses and Dissertations

The consumption of whole fruit is well established to promote health and prevent disease. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans includes both whole fruit and 100% fruit juice in its intake recommendations. Compositional differences between whole fruit and 100% fruit juice may exist especially with regard to health-promoting dietary fiber. Based on potential compositional differences, a primary hypothesis was created: whole fruit consumption frequency will be lower in adults with less favorable cardiovascular measures. Additionally, a secondary hypothesis was created: 100% fruit juice consumption frequency will be higher in adults with less favorable cardiovascular measures. To explore the hypothesis, a cross-sectional, …

Understanding Factors Underlying Fatigue Among Collegiate Aviation Pilots In The United States, Julius Keller, Flavio Antonio Coimbra Mendonca, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum

Aviation Faculty Publications

An increase in evidence-based studies into the deleterious effects of fatigue on flight operations has been reported by key aviation groups globally. The collegiate aviation flight training environment has not been researched at the same level when compared to military and airline operations. College aged students are unique in the sense that they are tasked with classwork, studying, participation in student organizations, social activities, and often have part time jobs within and outside of the academic environment. These conditions may cause errors, incidents, accidents, poor academic performance, and undesirable health metrics. The purpose of this study was to understand fatigue …

The Indications And Potential Complications Of Supplementing With Fat-Soluble Vitamins, Krista Thielges

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

There is a seemingly infinite list of available formations of over-the-counter supplements, including vitamins. According to Grand View Research, the nutritional supplement industry has grown in popularity in recent years, increasing its worth to an estimated 140 billion dollars in 2020 globally, with vitamins accounting for 31.4% of the revenue. An estimated half of Americans take a daily vitamin or supplement. With the increasing number of people supplementing, the incidence of disease should be trending down. This literature review focuses on fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin A, D, E, and K. Supplementation of these vitamins proposes the prevention of chronic diseases such …

Non-Pharmacologic And Alternative Management Of Chronic Pain In Multiple Sclerosis, Kylie Patian

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Chronic pain associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) is prevalent in many phenotypes. Pharmacologic therapy of this pain often fails to provide analgesia. This research is intended to determine which nonpharmacological interventions may be recommended for treatment of chronic extremity pain in individuals with MS. This research was primarily conducted through a comprehensive literature review of publications within the past five years on three databases, PubMed, EMBase, and CINAHL. Additional resources were added from “similar” sections of the databases, directly from included studies, and when used to inform background information, for a total of 26 resources. Studies were excluded if not …

This literature review aimed to investigate a correlation between low serum vitamin D concentrations and outcomes of COVID-19 infections. A total of 27 research articles …

The Impact Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In The Management Of Type Ii Diabetes, Benjamin Graf May 2022

The Impact Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring In The Management Of Type Ii Diabetes, Benjamin Graf

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 36 million Americans have a diagnosis of type II diabetes (T2D). Among these patients with T2D, nearly forty percent have glycated hemoglobin A1c (Hgb A1c) values above the target goal of 7%. Many patients with T2D utilize self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) systems to monitor day-to-day fluctuations in blood glucose values. However, SMBG systems can be cumbersome and may result in lower patient compliance. With many patients struggling to achieve their target Hgb A1c, methods to improve glycemic control are needed to prevent long-term diabetes-related complications. This literature review aims to investigate the …

Long Term Outcomes Of Anti-Retroviral Treatment Vs. Additional Nutritional Supplementation For Hiv Patients, Michael P. Gillispie

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

The purpose of this systematic literature review is not to determine the best treatment for human immunodeficiency virus HIV but to analyze additional supplementation that can prolong the progression of the disease process. Zinc, vitamin A, D, and E will be evaluated additionally with the antiretroviral treatment ART. The cost of an ART Regimen can be very expensive and challenging for patients to afford. The goal is to find an acceptable option to complement ART with a sensible cost to prolong disease progression and minimize additional costs of health care. With the advances of ART, more and more patients can …

How Does Access To Primary Care Affect The Latino Population, Brandon Harthan May 2022

How Does Access To Primary Care Affect The Latino Population, Brandon Harthan

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Healthcare disparities by race or ethnicity across the United States are becoming more evident as the population continues to grow, none being more evident than that of the Latino population. The purpose of this research is to determine the effects that access to primary healthcare has on the comorbidity and mortality of the Latino population. Much of the research supports the theory that Latino’s are at greater risk of comorbidity and mortality from diabetes, chronic liver disease, and cirrhosis due to their decreased access to primary healthcare services. However, evidence also supports the “Hispanic Mortality Paradox” in which Latinos have …

Hepatitis C Treatment For Substance Users In North Dakota, Janae Arnold May 2022

Hepatitis C Treatment For Substance Users In North Dakota, Janae Arnold

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

In the 1960’s, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic began mainly through the transmission of blood transfusions. By the time screening was implemented, millions had already become infected worldwide. After a decade of declining infection rates, a second wave started in the midst of the opioid epidemic in 2010. Prior to 2014 and the application of curative direct-acting antivirals, treatment was expensive, had low efficacy, many side effects, and long treatment durations. Advances in medicine have allowed for HCV elimination with shorter treatment durations, less side effects, and higher treatment rates. Unfortunately, treatment is not offered to all HCV patients …

Site Characterization For Co2 Storage, Abd-Rasheed Abiodun Ajiboye

Theses and Dissertations

Global warming is one of the most widely debated issues on the planet. Growing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are responsible for global warming but not just as a result of human activity. Nonetheless, human activity has a significant impact on the rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere. International bodies are worried; as a result, the world's CO2 reduction options are being investigated. CO2 storage in suitable geological strata under the earth is believed to be one of the most viable options. The purpose of this research is to set the framework for evaluating the characteristics of an …

Interventions Pertinent To Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Adam K. Matz, Roni Mayzer, Mandy Herberholz

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

One in 12 children will have a parent incarcerated at some point in their lifetime, with a staggering rate of one in four for African American children (Wildeman et al., 2018). Though the incarcerated populations have been in decline across the United States in the past decade (Carson, 2020), its impact still dwarfs that of most other countries (Coyle et al., 2016). The long-term residual consequences of the country’s imprisonment binge are likely to burden later generations through a myriad of social and economic disadvantages that extend through the children of today’s prisoners. Consequences may manifest in terms of social …

Despite the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, the pandemic’s persistence and recent spikes in cases have heightened the need for the promotion of protective behaviors notably, the continued use of face coverings (or ‘masks’ in the common parlance for COVID-related face coverings). Effective messaging on mask use is essential to more fully resonate with individuals and their shared communities. Studies covering rural or mostly-urban regions in the U.S. are sparse. Accordingly, an interdisciplinary team of social work and public health researchers explored mask wearing behaviors in a small, urban metro community consisting of two cities spanning North Dakota and Minnesota that …
