Popoluca Evidence For Syntactic Levels, Benjamin F. Elson, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1983

Popoluca Evidence For Syntactic Levels, Benjamin F. Elson, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "A central claim of relational grammar (Perlmutter and Postal 19831, 198c, in press) is that sentences often involve more than one syntactic level. In this respect, relational grammar differs most notably from the majority of other current syntactic frameworks. We present evidence from Sierra Popoluca, a Mixe-Zoque language of Veracruz, Mexico, in support of this claim. The central evidence involves what has been called Possessor Ascension. The constructions for which we claim multilevel analyses are necessary are those which involve advancements to direct object, and Passive."

The Relationship Of Morphology And Syntax: Evidence From Quechua, David J. Weber Jan 1983

The Relationship Of Morphology And Syntax: Evidence From Quechua, David J. Weber

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Muysken argues from Quechua data for the separation of morphology and syntax. After quoting Pike's claim, "For the description of some languages it is not accurate or helpful to postulate a sharp morphology-syntax dichotomy." Muysken continues: "Here I would like to argue in detail that it is both accurate and helpful to postulate that dichotomy." (page 279) I intend to show that Muysken is wrong, that Quechua provides considerable evidence that morphology and syntax must be closely integrated, and that strictly separating them makes capturing certain regularities of the language--if not impossible--at least very difficult. I take …

Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen Dec 1982

Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

In the current investigation aspects of experience and personality in adult life were objectively assessed in relation to the childhood use of transitional objects. Experiences identified as characteristic of the "intermediate area" included those of deep and intense involvement. Hypnotic susceptibility, "absorption" phenomena, and personal interests and pursuits were measured as experiences representative of this realm. The study also sought to establish further correlative links between early use of transitional objects and adult personality traits and characteristics. Information regarding the early attachment to special inanimate objects was obtained through self- and parental-reports to questionnaires designed to survey parameters of object …

Differences In Experiences: A Study Of Handicapped And Nonhandicapped Young Children In A Mainstreamed Preschool, Linda L. Reiten Aug 1982

Differences In Experiences: A Study Of Handicapped And Nonhandicapped Young Children In A Mainstreamed Preschool, Linda L. Reiten

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. The first purpose of this study was to determine the differences in classroom experiences of four mainstreamed preschool children, two handicapped and two nonhandicapped. To determine these differences, three questions were asked: (1) Do teachers and peers interact differently with handicapped than with nonhandicapped children? (2) Is the use of the physical space in the classroom different for handicapped than for nonhandicapped? (3) What are some of the qualitative differences in the classroom experiences of the handicapped and nonhandicapped children?

The second purpose of this study was to draw out the themes that constituted the differences in experiences. The …

Use Of Indirect Services By Speech/Language Pathologists In Manitoba Public Schools, Deborah Elaine Partridge May 1982

Use Of Indirect Services By Speech/Language Pathologists In Manitoba Public Schools, Deborah Elaine Partridge

Theses and Dissertations

Speech/language pathologists in Manitoba public schools have expressed concern about their large caseloads and their frustrations in dealing with time restrictions. Indirect services have been suggested as a means of coping with these concerns. Research has shown that indirect services such as home programs and use of paraprofessionals, volunteers, and classroom and resource teachers have proven to be especially effective.

The purpose of this study was to compile information from speech/language pathologists in Manitoba public schools concerning use of indirect services and to use this information to compare service models used by subjects working in urban and rural areas of …

A Dialect Analysis Of Hymns And Poems To The Virgin And Christ And Other Religious Poems From Ms. Lambeth 853, Steven A. Weiler May 1982

A Dialect Analysis Of Hymns And Poems To The Virgin And Christ And Other Religious Poems From Ms. Lambeth 853, Steven A. Weiler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a dialect analysis of a select group of hymns and poems to the Virgin and Christ and other religious poems from MS Lambeth 853. It thoroughly examines the phonology of the vowels in words of Old English origin found in the MS and records all these words except for most of the unstressed conjunctions. It restricts examina tion of consonants to those phenomena which are considered conclusive in respect to dialect. It has both a compiled list of all pronoun forms according to person, number, case, and gender and an examination of such forms that are important …

Arts Education In A Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based On Comparative Analysis Of Arts Education Theories, Jean A. L. Olson May 1982

Arts Education In A Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based On Comparative Analysis Of Arts Education Theories, Jean A. L. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

In this study the historical role of the arts in America was briefly traced as well as the history of federal interest in the arts and arts education. The importance of arts education for the individual, the school, and society was stated. Four basic tenets of arts education were derived from research and literature which provided criteria for effective arts activities and strategies. These tenets suggest that arts education (1) should be based on experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented approaches; (2) should be viewed as a developmental activity; (3) should focus on the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning; and (4) …

On Coexistence And Convergence Of Two Phonological Systems In Michif, Donna Evans Jan 1982

On Coexistence And Convergence Of Two Phonological Systems In Michif, Donna Evans

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In this paper I will present some of the evidence that has been used to argue that Michif has two separate phonological systems. I will also present evidence demonstrating that convergence is occurring, particularly at the level of phonetically motivated rules."

Arawakan (Brazil) Morphosyntax, Desmond C. Derbyshire Jan 1982

Arawakan (Brazil) Morphosyntax, Desmond C. Derbyshire

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The purpose of this study is to present some of the major morphosyntactic characteristics of eight Arawakan languages spoken in Brazil. [...] The five areas of morphosyntax which are treated in tern in the following sections are: word order, case marking, verb morphology, coordination, and subordination. As will be seen in section 3, much of the morphosyntactic complexity of these languages is found in the verb, and certain phenomena that in other languages would be dealt with in other parts of the syntax are treated in that section, including: valence-changing devices such as causatives, passives and reflexives; …

Obviation In Michif, Deborah Weaver Jan 1982

Obviation In Michif, Deborah Weaver

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Michif is a language growing out of the contact between Europeans and Native Americans, mostly French and Cree. Spoken by residents of the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota, as well as in parts of Canada, it has a noun phrase that is primarily French and a verb phrase and overall syntax that is primarily Cree.

This thesis examines the effect the loss of most Cree nouns has had on the proximate/obviative distinction usually found in Algonquian languages, of which Cree is one. This distinction is a cross-referencing system for identifying which of several third persons in a given context …

Initial And Non-Initial Indirect Objects In Spanish, J. Albert Bickford Jan 1982

Initial And Non-Initial Indirect Objects In Spanish, J. Albert Bickford

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In this paper I survey various constructions in Spanish that involve indirect objects. I claim that many final 3's in Spanish do not head initial 3-arcs, in particular, those that appear in Causative Clause Union, in the Inalienable Possessor construction, in Inversion, and in constructions in which the final 3 is an initial Oblique.

"The analysis and discussion is carried on within the framework of Relational Grammar (Perlmutter, 1980, and to appear, a and b). I present an argument that because Relational Grammar posits initial syntactic relations that are distinct from both semantics and final syntactic relations, …

Complexity And Constituent Order In Matihuaca (Huanuco) Quechua, Anne M. Stewart Jan 1982

Complexity And Constituent Order In Matihuaca (Huanuco) Quechua, Anne M. Stewart

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This study is the product of an investigation into Quechua sentence structure from the perspective of functional grammar. [...]

"LIPOC There is a Language Independent Preferred Order of Constituents (LIPOC) according to which constituents are preferably placed from left to right in increasing order of complexity (Dik 1978:192)

[...]

"LIPOC is used to explain word order in the following way. If the functional pattern of a sentence is compatible with LIPOC (i.e., if they predict the same order), then LIPOC has no effect; but if the functional pattern and LIPOC are at variance, the language is expected …
