"Training The Young Idea How To Shoot" : Teaching In Barnes County, The First Thirty Years, 1879-1909, Lori Ann Lahlum

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally women and their role in history has been overlooked or under-represented. This thesis will look at teachers and education in Barnes County, Dakota Territory and North Dakota, from the years 1879 to 1909. By 1879 the feminization of the teaching profession had occurred, and most Barnes County, and North Dakota, youth were taught by women. However, this is not only a study of female educators. To understand teaching and education in Barnes County, one needs to include male teachers, for they too played important roles.

The material for this study came mostly from primary sources: Barnes County school records, …

The Antiballistic Missile System: North Dakota's "Safeguard", Douglas H. Harler

Theses and Dissertations

The political issues surrounding the deployment and dismantlement of the Safeguard antiballistic missile system and the impact that this Safeguard system had on the communities of northeastern North Dakota are shrouded in controversy. In this paper, the history of the Safeguard complex is reviewed; however, primary attention is devoted to the 1976 Congressional decision to dismantle the Safeguard Complex at Nekoma, North Dakota and the effects it had on the surrounding communities. This thesis analyzes the arguments of the proponents and opponents of the Safeguard deployment and dismantlement. The study concludes that the final decision of the Congress to dismantle …

Eric Overmyer's On The Verge A Production Focusing On Feminine Values, Beth Stadem-Carlson May 1992

Eric Overmyer's On The Verge A Production Focusing On Feminine Values, Beth Stadem-Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

Eric Overmyer's play On the Verge focuses on three women who leave their world in the year 1888 and enter Terra Incognita, a fanciful world that propels then into the future until they land in the year 1955. The women in Overmyer's play are three extraordinary explorer/adventurers whom, I believe, are based upon three women explorers who actually lived in the late 1800s. The thrust of my thesis focuses on identifying the values displayed by the women in the play, and their real-life counterparts, and determining whether or not these values can be identified as "feminine" or, if indeed, there …

Relationships Between Previous School And Life Experiences Of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers And Their Attitudes Toward Science And Science Teaching, Carlyn Elizabeth Grutzner Sampson

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between previous school and life experiences of pre-service elementary school teachers at the University of North Dakota and their attitudes toward science and science teaching.

The study incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The first six pre-service teachers from one of the science methods class who volunteered were selected for taped private interviews. Based on this information a quantitative survey (Sampson Survey I) was designed for discovering the relationship between past experiences of pre-service teachers and their current attitudes toward science and teaching science. Additionally, the Shrigley Science Attitude Scale (Shrigley, 1974b), which assesses attitudes …

Person-Centered And Dialogical Counseling: A Comparative Study., Rand Ziemke Rasmussen Feb 1992

Person-Centered And Dialogical Counseling: A Comparative Study., Rand Ziemke Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

Carl R. Rogers' Person-Centered philosophy and Martin Buber's Dialogical philosophy are often compared with one another. Some scholars conclude that they are merely variations on a theme, while others conclude that they represent two entirely separate world-views. With the advent of Dialogical counseling this debate is brought into the discipline of counseling. The purpose of this study is to continue this debate in the discipline of mental health counseling. The current study is an interpretive inquiry into the similarities and differences of Person-Centered and Dialogical counseling. Utilizing the written works of Buber and Rogers, the written work of counselors who identify …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Maternal And Child Risk Factors To Development And Low-Income Status In Grand Forks County., Kay Elizabeth Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between maternal and child risk factors and the variables of development, low-income status, and multiple births. The sample consisted of 193 children referred to the North Dakota Early Childhood Tracking System in Grand Forks County from 1988 to mid-1991. The referral criteria were based on established, biological, and environmental risk factors. The correlation between development and risk factors was not significant. Low-income status was significantly correlated to maternal risk factors (p $<$.001), short term respiratory problems (p $<$.05), neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05), and single parenthood (p $<$.001). Multiple births were significantly correlated to neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05) and prematurity (p $<$.001).

Spousal Bereavement In The Second Year: Differences In Bereavement Outcome Among The Rural And Urban Elderly., Laurie Ann Brustad

Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-five bereaved rural elderly subjects (10 males, 15 females) were compared with twenty-five bereaved urban elderly subjects (16 females, 9 males) in the second year after the death of a spouse. All subjects were drawn from a Hospice population. The rural elderly were found to have higher levels of depression, unresolved grief, and poorer health than the urban elderly as measured by the Multiscore Depression Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Wahler Physical Symptoms Inventory, and the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief. Multiple regression analyses revealed that several variables influenced scores on the outcome measures. Depression scores were best predicted …
