Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons
Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a good deal of talk about "'multicultural education" in the past few years; at the center of these discussions are issues of ethics, politics, and values. What does it mean to be "multicultural"? How does one's culture figure into pedagogical situations—as a teacher? as a student? How should these complex social and historical backgrounds be utilized at the university? Finally, what are the cultural costs of a university education for students, especially those students from historically oppressed cultural backgrounds?
This study specifically examines the situation of Native American students in the university writing classroom. Drawing upon many …
A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki
A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki
Theses and Dissertations
Tension headache is a widespread problem, with an estimated lifetime prevalence rate of 69% for males and 88% for females. Empirical evidence supports the clinical observation that daily stress is a powerful precipitant of tension headaches. Research also supports the contention that tension headache sufferers tend to appraise and cope with daily stressors in ways which exacerbate or prolong this stress. Because aerobic exercise (EX) has been implicated as a useful stress relieving agent, this study examined the use of aerobic exercise as a treatment for tension headache. A comparison treatment consisting of progressive relaxation, stress management, and biofeedback (PR), …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall
Theses and Dissertations
Results of studies investigating the possible presence of bias in psychotherapy are equivocal. Past studies have not taken into consideration the amount of information provided to clinicians and therefore have varied this dependent variable unsystematically from study to study. The current study explored the effects of the gender of the psychologist, gender of the client, and level of information provided upon which to base decisions on diagnostic and treatment decisions. Three cases varying gender of the client and the amount of information given were mailed to 814 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Respondents …
The Nuclei Of Discontent, B. Jane Overmoe
The Nuclei Of Discontent, B. Jane Overmoe
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to disclose a dramatic political event in droughtstricken North Dakota during the so-called "Dirty Thirties." After completing a Communist investigation for the Americanism Committee of the American Legion Auxiliary for the Department of North Dakota, Agnes Kjorlie Geelan began speaking engagements to inform the public about the results of the report and to persuade members of the American Legion Auxiliary to act upon the information. This study specifically analyzed the rhetoric of Geelan’s "Nuclei of Discontent" Address at the American Legion Auxiliary State Convention in June 1932 in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare demographic and personality characteristics of a group of inpatients at a psychiatric hospital in New York State who were sexually abused and who were self-mutilators (N = 64) with: a group of sexually abused inpatients (N = 42); a group of self-harming inpatients (N = 25); and a group of selected general psychiatric inpatients (N = 25). All subjects were 18 years of age or older at the time of the study and over 90% of the participants were females.
It was hypothesized that sexually abused/self-mutilating patients would show greater similarity to …
Health Care Perspectives Of Consumers And Providers In Northwest Minnesota, Mary D. Wiersma
Health Care Perspectives Of Consumers And Providers In Northwest Minnesota, Mary D. Wiersma
Theses and Dissertations
An overwhelming number of reports in the literature identify common problems within our health care system and the unique problems faced by rural areas regarding health care delivery. A paucity of research exists that addresses problems of rural health care as perceived by consumers and health care providers.
In this study, the perceived health care needs, wants, and demands of consumers and providers in a single region of a Midwestern state were sampled to clarify the priorities of these groups. Orem's self-care deficit theory of nursing (S.C.D.N.T.) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. A selected group of …

Use Of Chlorine Dioxide To Remove Fish Pathogens From Garrison Diversion Water, Wayne C. Hustoft
Theses and Dissertations
This report considers the use of chlorine dioxide as an alternate disinfectant for the removal of biota from Garrison Diversion water. Laboratory testing has shown that chlorine may not be an acceptable disinfectant because it can produce carcinogens from side reactions with constituents found in natural surface waters.
This study used Lake Sakakawea water collected at the Snake Creek Pumping Station located on the eastern shore. Water samples were of direct filtration effluent from a laboratory scale filter column. samples were gathered at several different turbidity levels. The "DPD" method, as published in "Standard Methods for the Analysis of Water …
Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa
Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa
Theses and Dissertations
Much effort on the part of researchers from all social science disciplines has gone into studying the effect of crime on its victims, their treatment by the criminal justice system, and others who routinely come into contact with them. This research has shown a need for improved treatment of crime victims by service providers and other helpers. Because empathy plays such an important role in mediating an individual's response to another's victimization, reliable methods to evaluate and foster empathy are needed. Increased empathy for victims on the part of police officers, prosecutors, health care providers, friends and family, could help …

Interpersonal Perception In Mmpi-2 Defined Sociopathic Females: An Examination Of The Effects Of Partner Gender On Impression Accuracy And Self-Perception., Frederick Paul List
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined various aspects of interpersonal perception among individuals exhibiting significant sociopathic characteristics (spike 4 MMPI-2 elevations) and control subjects (no significant MMPI-2 elevations). In addition, sociopathic self-perceptions were examined to test hypotheses related to self-image differences between these individuals and control subjects. Each subject participated in two interaction sessions. In each session the subject interacted with two partners. For one session both partners were male, and for the other, both were female. This study appears to offer one of the first attempts to implement Cronbach's component analysis in a study of gender effects among individuals exhibiting a clinically …

Integrative Learning From The Student Perspective: A Case Study, Ann Lee Miller Asbeck
Integrative Learning From The Student Perspective: A Case Study, Ann Lee Miller Asbeck
Theses and Dissertations
This paper considers the educational concept of integration as it applies to curriculum design and implementation and to the relationship between curriculum integration and integrative experiences of student participants. Three assumptions underlie the study: (a) Integration is a goal of a program called Integrated Studies, (b) the meaning of integration must be defined within the context of a program, and (c) integration in Teaching & Learning is more than a structure designed by a faculty. The Integrated Studies Program at the University of North Dakota, by its own description, seeks to provide a more coherent learning experience for students within …
The Development Of An Interpersonal-Developmental-Existential Assessment Inventory For Determining Therapeutic Focus, Charles A. Pap
The Development Of An Interpersonal-Developmental-Existential Assessment Inventory For Determining Therapeutic Focus, Charles A. Pap
Theses and Dissertations
Increasingly, insurance companies, legislators, and funding agencies have examined the efficacy of psychotherapy and counseling, and have moved towards the briefer forms of therapy. Though some clinicians resist a move to greater accountability, the majority are concerned with providing an effective service to individuals, couples, and families experiencing biopsychosocial difficulties. This study involved the development of an instrument that will assist therapists in determining a therapeutic focus, which is seen as an important component in brief psychotherapy.
There were two distinct phases to this study. In Phase One, intake interviews at a large Midwestern university counseling center were audiotaped. Using …

Transition Outcomes: The Relationship Between Special Education Services And The Quality Of Life Experienced By Young Adults With Mental Handicaps Who Have Left School, Dixie Eileen Lee Klein
Theses and Dissertations
This North Dakota study was planned in order to relate the school special education training that 107 young adults with mental handicaps experienced prior to 1989 to their employment status and living conditions in 1989. These individuals and their caregivers were surveyed by the Department of Public Instruction’s Division of Special Education and the survey information was tabulated by the Bureau of Educational Services and Applied Research at the University of North Dakota. Resulting data were statistically analyzed utilizing nonparametric methods.
The results of this study indicated that more high school graduates with mental handicaps in North Dakota were employed …

Self-Perceived Leadership Styles Of Department Chairpersons In Baccalaureate And Higher Degree Nursing Programs In The Midwest, Ranae Bohan Womack
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the self-perceived leadership styles of nursing department chairpersons in National League for Nursing accredited schools in ten midwestern states. Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership model was used as the conceptual framework for this descriptive study, and their LEAD-Self instrument was used to determine leadership styles of the 106 respondent nursing department chairpersons. In addition, the Scholarly Productivity Index (SPI) was used to determine the nursing chairpersons' involvement in prepublication and research, publication, editorial, and other scholarly activities.
The results suggested that a majority (61 percent) of nursing department chairpersons perceived themselves as having a "participating" leadership style. …
Effects Of Pre- And Post- Trial Caffeine Treatment On Memory For Prose, Malva F. Walters
Effects Of Pre- And Post- Trial Caffeine Treatment On Memory For Prose, Malva F. Walters
Theses and Dissertations
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant which is considered part of the normal diet. One approach to understanding whether ingestion of caffeine influences human cognition is to examine the effects of caffeine on memory.
This study examined the effects of caffeine ingested both before and after a prose learning task. Two hundred-forty-five subjects (121 males, 124 females) were divided into two groups. One group received 0, 2, or 4 mg/kg of caffeine before hearing three narrative prose passages. The second group received 0, 2, or 4 mg/kg of caffeine after hearing the prose passages. All subjects returned 24 hours …

Menstrual Hygiene Product Use And The Incidence Of Abnormal Papanicolaou Smear Results, Sue K. Goebel
Theses and Dissertations
Today the majority of females fifteen years and older have used tampons. Since their introduction in 1933, tampons have changed greatly in composition: more absorbent synthetic fibers have replaced natural fibers, plastic applicators have joined cardboard, and some contain a fragrance. While changes in vaginal mucosa including inflammatory changes, lacerations, and micro-ulcerations as a result of tampon use have been documented, no research examining the use of menstrual hygiene products and their effect on cervical cytology was located.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between menstrual hygiene product use and the incidence of abnormal Pap smear …
