The Morphology Of Nouns In The Ugoroŋmo Language (Arara Of Pará), Shirley Dias Cardoso De Souza Aug 2010

The Morphology Of Nouns In The Ugoroŋmo Language (Arara Of Pará), Shirley Dias Cardoso De Souza

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I describe the morphology of nouns in the Ugoroŋmo language (Arara of Pará), which is spoken by just over three hundred people. The Ugoroŋmo people live on the bank of the Iriri river, in two villages (Laranjal and Cachoeira Seca) in the state of Pará, Brazil.

The nouns of this language can be divided in three main groups: those that are not inflected for possession, those that may be inflected for possession, and those that must be inflected for possession (inherently possessed nouns). Possession is marked by two affixes: a possessor prefix and a possessive suffix. Inherently …

Post-Operatives Nausea And Vomiting Treatment In The Adult Surgical Patient, Christine M. Nelson Aug 2010

Post-Operatives Nausea And Vomiting Treatment In The Adult Surgical Patient, Christine M. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in the adult surgical patient continues to be a major source of frustration for both clinicians and surgical patients despite multiple treatment modalities available to allay this problem. PONV can cause patient anxiety in the preoperative period and discomfort in the postoperative period. Multiple pharmacological treatments have been investigated in regard to their efficacy. These treatments have been examined as both single agents and multiple agents in terms of their effectiveness in the adult surgical patient. It is desirable to establish which treatment, whether it is single agent pharmacological treatment or multiple …

Historical Memory Of Mount Rushmore, Justin J. Mayer Aug 2010

Historical Memory Of Mount Rushmore, Justin J. Mayer

Theses and Dissertations

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hilis of South Dakota lias differing economic, cultural, political and religious meanings. Particularly, an American or "white" interpretation and the interpretations of the Sioux Nation. These different perspectives of Mount Rushmore reveal more about the history of the Black Hills of South Dakota and how cultures redefine events to meet contemporary needs. This thesis examines the original intentions for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and traces how the monument was described to others during construction. An examination of presidential speeches and remarks made about Mount Rushmore during construction helps discern one political …

George Orwell's "Depression" Novels: Laying Bare The Emotional Cost Of The Great Depression In Britain, Sonja Hathaway

Theses and Dissertations

The economic hardships that many people are facing in this the first decade of the twenty-first century have led politicians, historians, economists, and others to re-examine the 1930s in an attempt to understand their own time. The decade of the Great Depression was one of severe worldwide economic crisis and has been well documented, especially in Britain. Records compiled during the period by historians, statisticians, and social investigators have led to studies on the economic, political, and social conditions of the time. People are not, however, only physical, economic, and social beings. The challenge in studying the interwar period in …

This study used a multimethod approach to examining this construct to learn how performance anxiety is best understood in these athletes, who were identified on the basis of their eligibility to participate in the Special Olympics as determined by the inclusion criteria set by the state in which the research was conducted. Two methods were used including: completion of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory by both athletes and parents, coaches, volunteers, or significant others prior to competition: and …

Perceived Levels Of Empowerment In Parish Nursing, Jean C. Bokinskie Aug 2010

Perceived Levels Of Empowerment In Parish Nursing, Jean C. Bokinskie

Theses and Dissertations

Parish nursing is a community-based subspecialty practice of nursing. The parish nurse (PN) melds spiritual care with nursing practice to wholistically address the needs of parishioners and faith communities. PNs work with other health care providers and organizations, as well as lay and professional church leaders to successfully develop, organize, and lead health promoting and spiritually healing activities. Empowerment of PNs is necessary to achieve positive outcomes of PN directed initiatives. Empowerment occurs through supportive and nurturing environments, as well as access to resources, information and power. However, multiple professional demands, interpersonal conflicts, and lack of adequate resources have created …

Results indicated that some PD subjects may have a history of objective binge eating episodes and have comparable or less severe psychopathology and behavioral …

The Role Of Social Support On Risk Factors And Frequency Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Erica R. Hoff Aug 2010

The Role Of Social Support On Risk Factors And Frequency Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Erica R. Hoff

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the role of social support as a potential protective factor of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Specifically, the study hypothesized that social support would moderate (decrease) the power of the relationship between NSSI risk factors and NSSI frequency. The four risk factors of interest were borderline personality disorder (BPD) traits, an invalidating family environment, depression, and anxiety. Data was collected via self-report questionnaires from a sample of 233 individuals currently enrolled as undergraduates at the University of North Dakota. Results indicated individuals with a history of one or more acts of NSSI …

Smokers' Responses To Fearful And Disgust-Eliciting Anti-Smoking Media, Mark C. Goetz Aug 2010

Smokers' Responses To Fearful And Disgust-Eliciting Anti-Smoking Media, Mark C. Goetz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to build upon Wakefield and colleagues and Vogeltanz-Holm and colleagues hypotheses that anti-smoking ads are effective by means of eliciting negative emotional states, particularly disgust. In this study, we compared two sets of ads: those high in fear and disgust and those high in only fear. We hypothesized that subjective and physiological responses to ads high in fear and have a disgust component would be greater than for the fear-only ads. We also predicted that the ads high in disgust would have higher rates of recall and engagement. Last, we predicted that participants viewing …

Staff Nurse Leadership: Leading At The Point Of Care, Anne L. Heid Aug 2010

Staff Nurse Leadership: Leading At The Point Of Care, Anne L. Heid

Theses and Dissertations

As health care undergoes pervasive transformation, the need has become acute to develop leadership at all levels of nursing. Decision-making by staff nurses at the point of care has significant impact on patient care outcomes and quality of health care in today's decentralized institutions. Little empirical research has been undertaken to understand the process of leadership at the staff nurse level. This study used the framework of symbolic interactionism and grounded theory research methodology to explore the process of staff nurse leadership. Descriptions of the process used to practice leadership at the staff nurse level were collected from staff nurse …

Proficient Dantrolene Administration, Erik Watson, Aug 2010

Proficient Dantrolene Administration, Erik Watson,

Theses and Dissertations

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, life-threatening, acute hypermetobolic condition that is elicited by exposure to specific drugs used during general anesthesia. These drugs include the volatile anesthetics and the depolarizing muscle blocking antagonist. The morbidities and mortality associated with MH is significant enough that each and every anesthetic provider guards against it

Treatment and management of MH is laborious and extensive. The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) provides the practitioner with approp1iate treatment measures through established protocol. Dantrolene is the mainstay treatment for MH. However, the management of secondary pathologies that follow in the MH crisis …

Raising Awareness On The Importance Of Drug Use Efficiency In The Operating Room, Tyler Braaflat Aug 2010

Raising Awareness On The Importance Of Drug Use Efficiency In The Operating Room, Tyler Braaflat

Theses and Dissertations

In today's cost conscious environment, efficient anesthesia care and dmg administration is a valuable concept. A significant problem in hospital operating rooms is the inefficient use of anesthesia drugs. Medication waste can cost the department or hospital thousands of dollars in unrecognized expenses. The purpose of this independent study was to conduct a comprehensive review of current literature on dmg use efficiency. The clinical question was "what is the evidence for the best method of decreasing anesthesia drug waste?" The final result is a Power Point presentation aimed at raising awareness on the impo11ance of efficient drug use for Certified …

Prevention Of Spinal Anesthesia Induced Hypotension During Elective Cesarean Section, Keith Nelson Aug 2010

Prevention Of Spinal Anesthesia Induced Hypotension During Elective Cesarean Section, Keith Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of cesarean delivery has increased dramatically over the past decade. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), cesarean deliveries accounted for more than 30% of all births in 2005, setting a new United States record. Due to the increased risks, morbidity, and mortality associated with general anesthesia for cesarean sections, regional anesthesia is most often selected for non-emergent cesarean deliveries. Unless a preexisting labor epidural is in place, spinal anesthesia is most often the regional technique of choice for cesarean deliveries due to its immediate onset and dense blockade. Hypotension …

Treatment Of Preoperative Anxiety In The Pediatric Patient: A Comparison Of Parental Presence During Induction Of Anesthesia Versus Preoperative Sedation, Jennifer Henjum

Theses and Dissertations

This independent project examined the challenge associated with effectively managing preoperative anxiety in the pediatric patient. Ineffectively treating this problem can cause both patient and provider dissatisfaction. Current interventions have been investigated in regard to their efficacy. They include parental presence at the induction of anesthesia and the administration of preoperative sedation. The purpose of this independent project was to establish which of these two interventions is most effective in the management of preoperative pediatric anxiety. A review and critique of literature has been conducted and analyzed to support conclusions made on this topic. The Roy Ad,iptation Model (RAM) was …

Education Of Obstetrical Nursing Staff Regarding Regional Anesthesia And Possible Complications, Megan M. Dallman Aug 2010

Education Of Obstetrical Nursing Staff Regarding Regional Anesthesia And Possible Complications, Megan M. Dallman

Theses and Dissertations

Spinal and epidural anesthesia have long been a popular choice for anesthesia in the obstetrical population, whether for a laboring patient or a patient undergoing a cesarean delivery. Anesthesia providers caITy out the placement and delivery of these blocks. After the block is deemed successful and the patient is considered medically stable, the anesthesia provider may then leave the side of their patient, trusting that the care given by the labor and delivery nurse will be the best possible care available. However, it is a well know fact that risks are present anytime an invasive procedure takes place. Complications can …

Oxygenation In The Anesthetized Morbidly Obese Patients Population, Summer L. Schauer

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity in America is a known public health epidemic. Not only are more Americans considered obese, many are now classified as morbidly obese based on extreme excesses of Body Mass Index (BMI). As the incidence of obesity continues to climb, the need for enhanced knowledge in caring for this patient population exists. Obesity negatively affects nearly every physiological process and patients with obesity present unique challenges for the healthcare provider including the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Of particular concern to CRNAs arc the changes th, 1. occur to the pulmonmy sys cm. Ventilation and oxygenation of H1ese patients during …

Sociocultural Influences On Body Image Across The Lifespan, Jaryn L. Allen Aug 2010

Sociocultural Influences On Body Image Across The Lifespan, Jaryn L. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Body image concerns are prevalent in Western society. Sociocultural theories posit that the media are largely responsible for body image dissatisfaction because they have an omnipresent influence which consistently portrays unrealistically thin females and hyper-muscular males, which are then internalized and used as measures of comparison for the average male or female. This phenomenon has been documented in countless studies with college-age females, but evidence of sociocultural influences on body image satisfaction is not as extensive in males, younger children, or older adults.

This study examined the impact of sociocultural influences on body image satisfaction in two, predominantly Caucasian, populations, …

The Believers: A Novel, Karen T. Miller Jul 2010

The Believers: A Novel, Karen T. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation takes for its topic the prosperity gospel, begun in the mid-nineteenth century and still thriving today. The prosperity ministries that cropped up in Oklahoma and Texas emphasize scriptures such as "ask what you Will and it shall be done" (John 15.7). They teach that if you have faith, whatever you ask of God Will be given to you. This novel explores what happens to a group of young adults in a small-town Arkansas church who follow the evangelist Reverend Elijah P. Dunlap's prosperity teaching. Weekly meetings of the Believers form the structure for the novel. The group's members …

Activation Dependent Function Of Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 3 In Neurosecretion, Sunitha Bollimuntha Jul 2010

Activation Dependent Function Of Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 3 In Neurosecretion, Sunitha Bollimuntha

Theses and Dissertations

Transient receptor potential canonical 3 (TRPC3), a non-selective Ca 2+-permeable cation channel, is a member of the TRP superfamily of ion channels. The mode of activation of TRPC3 is governed by a cascade of Phospholipase C (PLC) mediated signaling events, following G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) or tyrosine kinase receptor activation, resulting in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca2+ store depletion. This very store depletion triggers the activation of plasma membrane TRPC3 and hence they are termed as receptor operated or store operated cation channels. In addition to the receptor mediated activation of TRPC3, an alternate mode of channel activation has been described, …

Gender And Physical Abuse History As Predictors Of Adult Anxiety Reactions To A Public Speaking Evaluative Stress Paradigm, Brian Keith Moe Jul 2010

Gender And Physical Abuse History As Predictors Of Adult Anxiety Reactions To A Public Speaking Evaluative Stress Paradigm, Brian Keith Moe

Theses and Dissertations

Much research has been conducted regarding the long-term effects of childhood maltreatment. Childhood Physical Abuse (CPA), Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA), and Observed Domestic Abuse (ODA) have been linked to a variety of negative outcomes with effect sizes typically modest in size. This research base has been difficult to interpret because of study differences in the operationalization of abuse and the varied outcome measures that have been employed from study to study. The present study was designed to elicit participant emotional (state/trait anger and anxiety) and physiological (heart rate) reactions to a public speaking stress induction task. A sample of 98 …
