“How Can I Teach When I Was Not Taught How?”: Teacher Education For Mother Tongue Instruction For Stem In Southwest Nigeria, Motunrayo Adeosun

Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative study, the experiences, training, and challenges of teachers in primary schools in a community in southwest Nigeria were explored. The purpose of this study was to identify the experiences of teachers about their training for mother tongue instruction and how they teach pupils with the mother tongue or local language of the community, the challenges faced by teachers in teaching with the mother tongue, and the strategies used by teachers to overcome the challenges. This study found that teachers received no training and there is no curriculum for the training of teachers to teach in the mother …

Parp1 Modulates Gata3-Mediated Gene Regulation In Breast Cancer, Mikhala Cooper Dec 2024

Parp1 Modulates Gata3-Mediated Gene Regulation In Breast Cancer, Mikhala Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

In eukaryotic cells, chromatin acts as a physical barrier for many transcription factors, preventing them from efficiently binding to their recognition sequences within the nucleosome. Pioneer factors are a class of transcription factors that bind to nucleosomes and activate silent chromatin. Pioneer factors are frequently involved in various immune cell pathways, tissue development, and homeostasis, thereby underscoring their important roles in development and disease. Previous research found that pioneer factors have at least three fundamental properties: 1) they can interact with their cognate recognition sequences before transcription activation, 2) they can increase local chromatin accessibility, and 3) they have integral …

Outage Prediction And Detecting Influential Factors Under Extreme Weather Events Using Shap Analysis, Farishta Rahman Dec 2024

Outage Prediction And Detecting Influential Factors Under Extreme Weather Events Using Shap Analysis, Farishta Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

As electricity demands continue to grow and extreme weather events become more frequent, the need for resilient energy infrastructure is increasingly urgent. This thesis addresses three critical areas of power system resilience and monitoring. The first section of the thesis reviews the Texas power blackout in February 2021, which highlighted severe vulnerabilities in energy systems under extreme weather conditions. This analysis investigates the blackout event's causes, including generation capacity limitations and over-reliance on specific energy sources. The second section presents another weather event (ice storms) in North Dakota causing a multi-day blackout. Multiple machine learning approaches are deployed to predict …

Renewable Assignments: Comparing Faculty And Student Perceptions, Julie Lazzara, Matthew Bloom, Virginia Clinton-Lisell Nov 2024

Renewable Assignments: Comparing Faculty And Student Perceptions, Julie Lazzara, Matthew Bloom, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined faculty and student perceptions of renewable assignments within an OER-enabled pedagogy framework. Building on Wiley and Hilton’s (2018) framework, this study focused on the subset of practices that result in renewable assignments. Renewable assignments leverage OER permissions (reuse, redistribute, retain, remix, revise) to produce student work with value beyond the classroom. The study compared college students’ (N = 24) perceptions of value, interest, motivation, and reward for renewable assignments versus those of the instructor (N = 1) in one online class. Students reported that the value, interest, motivation, and reward of the renewable assignment were somewhat better …

Strengthening Online Psychology Students’ Sense Of Belonging With Social Annotation: An Experimental Study, Alison E. Kelly, Virginia Clinton-Lisell Nov 2024

Strengthening Online Psychology Students’ Sense Of Belonging With Social Annotation: An Experimental Study, Alison E. Kelly, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Sense of belonging is associated with postsecondary student success outcomes and has largely been studied within face-to-face course contexts. The increasing demand for online courses after the COVID-19 pandemic necessitates identifying ways instructors can foster belonging in their online courses. This study experimentally tested the effect of using social annotation on students’ sense of belonging in asynchronous online courses. Students in two psychology courses (N = 44) were randomly assigned to complete annotation assignments individually (control) or in groups using a social annotation platform (treatment). Students completed a course-level sense of belonging measure at the end of their courses …

Nanoparticles In Drilling Fluids: A Review Of Types, Mechanisms, Applications, And Future Prospects, Vasanth Gokapai, Prasad Pothana, Kegang Ling

Petroleum Engineering Student Publications

Nanofluids have gained significant attention as a promising solution to several challenges in drilling operations. Nanoparticles, due to their exclusive properties such as high specific surface area, strong adsorption potential, and excellent thermal conductivity, offer significant potential to improve the efficiency and performance of drilling processes. Regardless of the advancements in drilling fluids and techniques that have improved borehole stability, hole cleaning, and extreme operational condition (HTHP) management, limitations still persist. This review discusses a detailed summary of existing research on the application of nanofluids in drilling, exploring their types, properties, and specific uses in areas such as fluid loss …

Racial Misclassification Of American Indian And Alaskan Natives On Death Certificates In The United States: Report For National Network Of Public Health Institutes., Melanie Nadeau, Amber Lyon-Colbert, Maycee Carter, Keona Manuelito, Mikalen Belgarde, Roselle Martin

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

Racial misclassification is a persistent issue among American Indian and Alaskan Natives who are grossly misrepresented in death. Training is needed for those who report race on death certificates (i.e., funeral directors) so that health and mortality data is accurately reported. An environmental scan of existing resources, literature, and training opportunities was completed in order to understand the current knowledge as well as gaps in racial reporting on death certificates. Racial misclassification is a major barrier to accurate health data for AI/AN populations. It is estimated that approximately 20% of sampled AI/AN individuals were misclassified on their death certificates. Additionally …

Tribal Data Sovereignty: A Summary Of Structures, Systems, Principles, Laws, And Related Resources With An Emphasis On New Mexico, Melanie Nadeau, Amber Lyon-Colbert, Keona Manuelito, Tracy Wharton, Courtney Davis

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

This project examines the landscape of available scholarship and identifies key concepts, frameworks, and mechanisms that have been developed and are central to the creation of partnerships between Tribal and state public health professionals. Public health professionals, both on and off of Tribal lands, need data to inform decision making for health and education, funding, and resource allocation. Effective collection and use of data that includes Tribal Peoples must engage best practices for data stewardship and protection, recognizing the embedded biases of frameworks and theory, while finding mechanisms to enable public health actions and policy making in real time. Data …
