Lung-targeting drugs are thought to be potential therapies of refractory lung diseases by maximizing local drug concentrations in the lung to avoid systemic circulation. However, a major limitation in developing lung-targeted drugs is the acquirement of lung-specific ligands. Pulmonary surfactant protein A (SPA) is predominantly synthesized by type II alveolar epithelial cells, and may serve as a potential lung-targeting ligand. Here, we generated recombinant rat pulmonary SPA (rSPA) as an antigen and immunized an alpaca to produce two nanobodies (the smallest naturally occurring antibodies) specific for rSPA, designated Nb6 and Nb17. To assess these nanobodies' potential for lung targeting, we …

Low Bone Mineral Density In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Molly K. Torvik Apr 2015

Low Bone Mineral Density In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Molly K. Torvik

Theses and Dissertations

Low bone mineral density is a common and detrimental extra-intestinal complication in inflammatory bowel disease (IBO). There are several factors known to contribute to low bone mineral density in this population. The case outlined reviews a postmenopausal female with osteoporosis. While low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women is well-studied and often applied to 180, the process of bone loss is different in IBD which makes treatment more difficult. The literature review discusses the increased 1isk for low bone mineral density in IBD, factors increasing its risk, current screening and preventive care recommendations, barriers to improved bone mineral density in …

Using Polypharmacy Tools To Help Improve The Quality Of Life In Elderly, Jenna L. Kelsch Apr 2015

Using Polypharmacy Tools To Help Improve The Quality Of Life In Elderly, Jenna L. Kelsch

Theses and Dissertations

The aging population in the United States is increasing in numbers and in age. With an increasing elderly population comes increasing comorbid and chronic conditions. Polypharmacy is prevalent in multimorbid elderly patients and is on the rise in the United States. However, it is difficult to prescribe medications for the older adult especially those with multimorbidity. Aging affects the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications and leads to changes in how the medication is metabolized, stored, and excreted from the body, along with possible additional side effects. Beers criteria, Drug Burden Index, STOPP/ST ART criteria, Fit FOR the Aged criteria (FORT …

Comparing Light Therapy And Fluoxetine Therapy In Seasonal Affective Disorder, Kristine A. Wolbrink

Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal Affective disorder (SAD) is a subset of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) that occurs mainly in the winter months due to decreased exposure to sunlight. The disorder is especially common in latitudes north of the equator. Although the disorder is easily identifiable, the appropriate treatment for each patient varies. In this case report a patient case is presented describing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for SAD. The two most widely efficacious treatments for SAD are light therapy and pharmacologic therapy. Search engines such as Academic Search Premier, PubMed, the American Psychological Association, and PsychINFO. Search terms included Seasonal Affective Disorder, light …

Vaccinations: Home School Children's Effects On The Community, Kristy E. Peterfeso Apr 2015

Vaccinations: Home School Children's Effects On The Community, Kristy E. Peterfeso

Theses and Dissertations

Measles, a word that seemed to be obsolete, has now made a comeback recently in the news with the increase in outbreaks that are becoming apparent in communities throughout the United States. The definition of measles according to Frank Domino MD, editor of The Five Minute Clinical Consult Standard of 2015, is a "highly communicable acute viral illness that is characterized by a maculopapular rash and the classic triad of cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis" (Domino, 2015, p.742). Many individuals in today's society are choosing to not vaccinate their children for religious or their own personal reasons. Schools still require vaccinations …

Re-Emergence Of Measles: A Preventable Disease, Ogbitse Maureen Atake Apr 2015

Re-Emergence Of Measles: A Preventable Disease, Ogbitse Maureen Atake

Theses and Dissertations

Since the year 2000, when the United States of America declared measles eradicated from all its regions, this country is currently experiencing its highest rate of measles infection. In 2014 alone, across, America there were 16 reported measles outbreaks with close to 500 reported infection cases. This situation raised concerns in both the public health care system and health care policy making. This literature review focuses on, (1) a timeline (1989-2015) of reported measles outbreak across the Unites States. (2) The relationship between measles immunization or lack of immunization in the number of infected persons; and a person's risk of …

Non-Pharmacologic, Pharmacologic, And Combination Treatments For Depression:, Erin Dahn Apr 2015

Non-Pharmacologic, Pharmacologic, And Combination Treatments For Depression:, Erin Dahn

Theses and Dissertations

Depression affects an estimated 350 million people worldwide and is reported to be the leading cause of disability (World Health Organization, 2012). This disease, at its worst, can be fatal by resulting in suicide. Fewer than half of those with a diagnosis of depression receive treatment for the disease. A possible consequence of this may be the one million deaths that suicide is responsible for every year (WHO, 2012). These statistics cause concern for providers and raise questions regarding which treatment options will result in the best outcomes for those suffering from depression. This report will present a case in …

Dietary Habits And Colorectal Cancer Risk, Stacie M. Frovarp, Apr 2015

Dietary Habits And Colorectal Cancer Risk, Stacie M. Frovarp,

Theses and Dissertations

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) (2014), colorectal cancer (CRC) is the "3rd leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States"(p. 3). Researches have hypothesized how dietary habits could increase an individual's risk of developing CRC. Diets high in red meat for example, have long been thought to produce carcinogens through cooking and digestive processes. These carcinogens damage colon DNA, leading to neoplastic changes (Raskov, Pommergaard, Burcharth, & Rosenberg, 2014). On the other hand, fiber has been suggested as having a protective nature to individuals with CRC risk. Throughout this literature review a case involving 65-year-old female …

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring Apr 2015

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have shown that any amount of breastfeeding decreases a child's risk of otitis media, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes . Breastfeeding for one month or more decreases the risk of SIDS; two months or more decreases the risk of celiac disease; and breastfeeding for more than three months decreases the risk of type 1 diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and asthma. The benefits continue to grow if a child is breastfed more than six months (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012) .

Even though the benefits of breastfeeding are well documented, low-income women are still less likely …

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary P. Waller Apr 2015

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary P. Waller

Aviation Faculty Publications

Efforts to quantify personality characteristics in the pilots of manned aircraft extend back for decades. For individuals interested in piloting Unmanned Aircraft, similar analysis of normative personality characteristics remains relatively unexplored. This research examined the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality profiles of individuals pursuing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) studies at the University of North Dakota (UND). Using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) general personality index, the responses of a UAS Student sample (n=65) were compared to a Normative sample (n=248) previously collected by Petros (2013). The sample group, comprised of students with either Pre UAS Operations or UAS Operations declared …

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley Apr 2015

Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley

Theses and Dissertations

The need for health literate communication is evident in a changing and complex health care system. Yet, little formal training is available for nurses, physicians, and other health clinicians. Poor communication in the healthcare setting has negative effects on the patient, on the clinician, the health system and the larger community. This literature review identified techniques evident in the literature to produce positive patient and clinician health and communication outcomes. Supported interventions include communication techniques such as motivational interviewing, teach-back, teach-to-goal, the Four Habits Model and the Ask Me 3 model. The impact of such interventions can be measured through …
