Feasibility Of Hyperspectral Sensing For Detection Of Early Stages Of Corrosion In Structural Steel, Amrita Das, Sattar Dorafshan
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
The estimated global cost of steel atmospheric corrosion is 3-4% of the Gross Domestic Product, despite decades of corrosion mitigation practice. Steel, widely used for infrastructure construction, is composed primarily of iron and therefore is extremely vulnerable to atmospheric corrosion. The free iron atoms are highly reactive with water and oxygen molecules abundantly found in the atmosphere. Common non-contact in-field corrosion detection methods such as visual imaging and passive infrared thermography (IRT) use characteristics of visible corrosion compounds as the main features for corrosion detection. In this study, diffuse spectroscopy is investigated for the feasibility of corrosion detection before visual …

As mobile applications increasingly demand access to user data, the Android permission system has evolved to provide finer control. Despite this, users often approve permissions without full comprehension, risking privacy. This study investigates how Android users perceive and respond to permission requests, combining a structured survey (n=30) with review mining of Google Play Store feedback. Results reveal low confidence in understanding permissions, high uninstall rates for over-permissioned apps, and a dominant perception that categories like social media and games frequently request unnecessary access. We introduce the “regret framework” to describe how users react after realizing the mismatch between expectations and …

Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Theses and Dissertations
Cellular migration assays, particularly scratch assays, are pivotal in biomedical research for cell motility, wound healing, and metastasis. However, conventional scratch assays suffer from variability due to operator dependence, non-uniform scratch geometry, and a modified microenvironment that impacts reproducibility. This thesis presents the development and validation of a low-cost, 3D-printed device designed to standardize cellular migration assays. The device utilizes a spring mechanism and a biocompatible elastomer to create a uniform cellular exclusion zone without harming the surrounding cells. Through iterative prototyping and testing with MCF10A cell lines, the device demonstrated a significantly lower average standard deviation of length compared …
