Treatment Option Decision Making For Low-Grade Prostate Cancer, Janene Witherite
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer, among men, in the United States.
Low-grade PCa is defined by; lack of metastasis outside the prostate (M0), no lymph node involvement (N0), tumor staging up to T2a, a PSA of less than 10 ng/ml, a Gleason score of less than 6, and no more than two of the 10-12 tissue samples (each composed of less than 50% cancer cells) of the 10-12 samples taken.
Four treatment options exist for low-grade PCa patients: active surveillance (AS), external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), brachytherapy, and radical prostatectomy (RP), all of which cause …

Falls are a significant concern for older community-dwelling adults’ ability to age in place, specifically those who aged 60 and older. Many factors contribute to the risk of falls in older adults that need to be addressed by health care facilities, home health providers, and caretakers. Occupational therapy has a role to educate older adults, as well as health care providers on how to prevent the risk factors of older adults and falls. The purpose of this CAT is to take a deeper look at why this population has so many falls and examine the research addressing education and risk …

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2019), 1,645 babies are born with spina bifida each year. There are three different types of spina bifida, with myelomeningocele being the most common. As for prevalence, “Hispanic women have the highest rate of having a child affected by spina bifida, when compared with non-Hispanic white and non-Hispanic black women” (CDC, 2019, para. 2). Children diagnosed with spina bifida may face motor, sensory, and cognitive impairments that can affect their quality of life and participation in occupations. According to Murray et al. (2015), children between the ages of 8 and …

There remains a paucity of research surrounding the potential long-term effects of parental military deployment. This article provides counselors with an ability to better understand the long-term implications of parental deployment on the parent/child relationship through qualitative interviews with the, now, young adults who experienced a parent’s deployment, using consensual qualitative research methodology. The study makes several contributions to the knowledge base. Utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, this study examined how adult children of deployed parents view their past and current parental relationships. Four domains emerged, including 1) factors impacting relationship with dad, 2) deployment cycle, 3) military culture, and …

Sexual violence, including rape, is a pervasive problem on college campuses in the United States. Although men perpetrate the majority of sexual violence, men’s attitudes, experiences, and perspectives are not typically included in research on rape and sexual violence. We addressed this empirical gap through our mixed-methods analysis of 365 young men’s definitions of the term “rape.” Our analysis via consensual qualitative research revealed that men’s definitions fit into nine primary domains: lack of consent, taken advantage of, sex, sexual activity, unwanted, gender/sex-specific, harm to victim, relationship, and emotional response, as well as a miscellaneous domain. Further, using chi square …

Predictors Of Professional Quality Of Life In Rural Nurses, Stephanie Deese
Predictors Of Professional Quality Of Life In Rural Nurses, Stephanie Deese
Theses and Dissertations
Worldwide nursing shortages have led to an increased burden on healthcare systems, and this is especially true in already underserved, remote, and rural areas, where access to healthcare is limited and the loss of highly-skilled nursing professionals is deeply-felt. Professional quality of life (ProQOL) has been studied as a major influence on nurses’ wellbeing, job satisfaction, burnout rates, turnover rates, and quality of care. While certain job-related factors that impact nurses’ ProQOL outcomes have been identified – excessive workload, exposure to trauma, financial strain due to low wages, lack of or over-emotional engagement in the workplace, individual disposition – certain …

An Investigation Of Loss Of Control Eating Episodes And The Five Indicator Variables Of Loss Of Control Eating In A Non-Clinical Sample, Erica Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Binge eating is common across both clinical and non-clinical populations; the diagnostic definition of binge eating has been scrutinized by extant literature in that findings have shown loss of control (LOC) to be more related to pathology than the amount of food consumed. The current study aimed to elucidate this notion further by investigating different types of LOC eating based on perception and amount of food consumed. College students (N = 227) completed self-report questionnaires assessing disordered eating, psychopathology, emotion regulation, impulsivity, quality of life, and self-esteem; 173 (76%) also completed an interview on typical and LOC eating in the …
The Value Of Existential Worlds: Creation And Validation Of A Measure To Explore The Four Existential Worlds, Matthew Robert Rozzi
The Value Of Existential Worlds: Creation And Validation Of A Measure To Explore The Four Existential Worlds, Matthew Robert Rozzi
Theses and Dissertations
The field of counseling psychology is increasingly focused on understanding clients in holistic and non-pathologizing ways. Existential theory provides the four-worlds model for exploring human existence in line with this modern psychological zeitgeist. In this model, humans are understood to exist simultaneously in four “worlds” or “dimensions”: physical (umwelt), social (mitwelt), psychological (eigenwelt), and spiritual/philosophical (uberwelt). This measure construction project is the first known study to examine the personal importance (value) of existing in each world. The Value of Existential Worlds (VEW) was created and psychometrically examined. From the initial 63-items, a shorter (20-item) version was created which demonstrated a …

Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol use and abuse is an important issue amongst college students, and the totality of impacts are still misunderstood. Identification of high-risk alcohol abuse problems leads universities to intervene; however, the emotional, personal, and academic impacts of such mandated intervention programs is unclear. Helping universities understand students’ alcohol abuse challenges can aid appropriate interventions, as well as improve student well-being and academic success.
The purpose of this study is to examine the Student Chemical Assessment Review Program (SCARP), specifically to explore its impacts on student variables (university motivation, readiness/importance of confidence to change, self-esteem, guilt, shame, depression, anxiety, and resiliency) …

Instructional Coaching: Self-Efficacy, Resilience, And Joy, Aimee Marie Volk
Theses and Dissertations
At the time of this study, research on instructional coaching suggests positive outcomes for teacher retention and student achievement. However, merely providing an instructional coach to support a teacher is not sufficient. Effective coaching programs are built around foundational, structural, and instructional coaching program standards as well as employ coaches who are capable and effective in a multitude of content, instructional, and behavioral situations. Research illustrates that coaches vary significantly in effectiveness. Therefore, coaching outcomes may produce inconsistent results among various coaching programs and even between individual schools within the same school district. In other words, not all coaches or …

The Impact Of Cultural Values In Advertising On Saudi Consumers’ Loyalty, Abdullah Mohammed Bajaber
The Impact Of Cultural Values In Advertising On Saudi Consumers’ Loyalty, Abdullah Mohammed Bajaber
Theses and Dissertations
Advertising has been one of the most effective elements of marketing communication used to persuade audiences to behave in a certain way. Many studies have examined factors that affect ads positively. Increasing loyalty was classified as the primary goal of companies. Thus, advertisements were commonly used to achieve this goal. On the other hand, even though many studies discussed advertising elements that might generate negative impacts, the possible results of these ads were not sufficiently addressed. Through the theory of planned behavior, this study aimed to explore the role of the cultural value as an element impacting loyalty negatively by …

Critically Appraised Topic: Hippotherapy Intervention For School Age Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jedekiah May, Delanie Vitosh, Karleen Vonkrosigk
Critically Appraised Topics
The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has risen nearly 600 percent in the past two decades, with estimates suggesting that 1 in 68 children worldwide have a clinical diagnosis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014). Children with ASD experience resultant challenges in occupational functioning due to impairments in communication, social interaction, and sensory processing. Sensory modulation issues can cause negative impacts on physical and social functioning. Modulation allows filtering of irrelevant stimuli and maintenance of an optimal level of arousal that facilitates attention to environmental demands with longer engagement in tasks (Llambias, Magill-Evans, Smith, & Warren, 2016). …
