Screening For Fibromyalgia In Patients With Chronic Widespread Pain, Justus Ongaga May 2020

Screening For Fibromyalgia In Patients With Chronic Widespread Pain, Justus Ongaga

Nursing Capstones

Background: Fibromyalgia has an estimated prevalence of 2% of the United States population, with a greater estimated prevalence among women (3.4%) than with men (0.5%). In addition to widespread pain, fibromyalgia symptoms include fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, memory problems, and numbness/tingling sensations. If the condition remains untreated or is poorly managed, then fibromyalgia can present problems among individuals, families, and communities. The lack in fibromyalgia screening processes at a Midwest Pain Clinic presented opportunity for the project.

Objectives: The purpose of this clinical project was to increase fibromyalgia screening by using the Fibromyalgia Rapid Screening Tool (FiRST) in …

Optimizing Outpatient Pediatric Clinic Visits For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Agnes F. Liem May 2020

Optimizing Outpatient Pediatric Clinic Visits For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Agnes F. Liem

Nursing Capstones

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) consists of several complex neurodevelopmental conditions that include deficits in communication, social functioning, and specific repetitive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Based on the services that they receive, parents’ perceptions of care for children with ASD elicit both positive and negative overall experiences during their pediatric outpatient clinic visits. Literature suggests caregivers identify PCP and clinic personnel’s lack of understanding or compassion for a child with ASD as a barrier. Additionally, caregivers identify more external concerns such as environmental stimuli and overstimulation, waiting too long, not knowing what will happen, and the physical examinations during the …

Effects Of Pole Walking On Adults With Parkinson's Disease Following 6 Weeks Of Training, Kathleen Dennison, Taylor Jamison May 2020

Effects Of Pole Walking On Adults With Parkinson's Disease Following 6 Weeks Of Training, Kathleen Dennison, Taylor Jamison

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Introduction: Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects motor planning and motor function. Symptoms associated with this disease include bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability. These symptoms are often accompanied by gait disturbances including decreased step length, arm swing, and gait velocity, as well as diminished trunk rotation and postural instability all which make functional mobility increasingly difficult. Conventional walking has been shown to be an effective physical activity to maintain mobility and improve function and overall fitness. Specifically, walking speed has been identified as a crucial predictor for fall risk which is why clinicians have …

The Epidemiology Of Pediatric Sports And Recreational Injuries Reporting To The Emergency Department In Grand Forks, Nd, Erin Larson, Kameron Mcnary

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Introduction: Sports and recreation injuries are common despite efforts to make sports and recreational activities safe through rules of play and the use of safety equipment. Analyzing the injuries that result and the associated mediating factors can help to assess whether more effective preventive measures can be instituted.

Methodology: Medical records from an upper Midwest regional medical center were examined for sports and recreational injuries in youth (0-19 years of age) who reported to the emergency room during the years mid 2010 to mid 2015. Data from 2011 to 2014 was evaluated to have a complete number of years for …

Association Of Generalized Joint Hypermobility And Occurrence Of Musculoskeletal Injury In Physical Therapy And Occupational Therapy Students, Allie Erdmann, Amber Klein May 2020

Association Of Generalized Joint Hypermobility And Occurrence Of Musculoskeletal Injury In Physical Therapy And Occupational Therapy Students, Allie Erdmann, Amber Klein

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background: Prior research has shown that physical and occupational therapy students have a higher prevalence of hypermobility than that which is seen within the general population. Throughout the literature, the rates of injury are greater in those with hypermobile joints. It has also been found that females have higher rates of hypermobility than males. Given this information, a secondary question arose regarding whether or not hypermobility and injury (initial or recurrence) are directly related to one another.

Purpose: The intent of conducting this study was to evaluate physical therapy and occupational therapy students for hypermobility while concurrently assessing for their …

Electromyographic Activity Of Hamstrings And Quadriceps Muscle During Jumping And Landing: Pilot Study, Shawn Danielson, Logan Flegel, Nathan Mertens

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose. The purpose of this pilot study was to see if there was a difference in the amount of electromyographic (EMG) activity in the quadriceps (vastus medialis and vastus lateralis) compared to the amount of EMG activity in the hamstrings (biceps femoris and semitendinosus) muscles in active male and female subjects during vertical jumping and landing. In addition, we looked at the amount of knee flexion that occurred shortly after landing from a vertical jump.

Methods. EMG activity was recorded using a Noraxont TeleMyo DTS telemetry unit with a sampling rate of 1 kHz. EMG data was recorded …

Evaluation Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In The Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injuries, Jordan Wiedmann May 2020

Evaluation Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In The Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injuries, Jordan Wiedmann

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect approximately 2.5 million people each year (Brain, 2014). The most current treatment options for TBIs include extensive long-term rehabilitation and therapy services, in which many only gain little improvement of their overall health (Traumatic, 2019). New trends in treating TBIs with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are emerging due to increased accessibility to hyperbaric oxygen chambers. The purpose of this research and systematic literature review is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of using HBOT to improve the treatment outcomes of TBIs. This review included the search of four databases including PubMed, Cochrane Review, Clinical Key, …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer, behind skin cancer, among men, in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019.). PCa is defined as low-grade or low risk if the neoplasm grows slowly or not at all. According to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, (2020), to make the conclusion that a PCa is low-grade, several tests are performed including a prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, a Gleason score, and a TNM score, which refers to tumor size, lymph node involvement, and metastasis outside the prostate. Low-grade PCa is further defined …

Efficacy Of Bariatric Surgery Compared To Non-Surgical Treatments For Morbid Obesity, Erica L. Donovan May 2020

Efficacy Of Bariatric Surgery Compared To Non-Surgical Treatments For Morbid Obesity, Erica L. Donovan

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

The purpose of this research is to show the efficacy of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy as compared to traditional diet and exercise models. Morbid obesity is related to increased blood pressure, incidence of diabetes, high cholesterol, and incidence of obstructive sleep apnea, all of which contribute to increased incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, and vascular compromise. Finding ways to combat morbid obesity has resulted in invasive surgical techniques because traditional diets and exercise work infrequently and often fail. Systematic reviews, meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials, and retrospective studies were found using the database of CINAHL, SportsDiscus, PsycInfo, Embase, and …
