Resiliency As A Moderating Factor For The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Substance Use In American Indian And Caucasian College Students, Emily Sargent
Theses and Dissertations
College students engage in frequent substance use behaviors and experience related consequences. Previous research suggests American Indians (AIs) experience higher rates of substance use and related consequences. Further, AIs may experience negative substance use outcomes given higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, resiliency (i.e., experiencing positive outcomes despite adversity in one’s life) may be one factor that moderates the relationship between ACEs and substance use to in order to reduce use and negative consequences. The current study examined alcohol and drug use/consequences, ACEs, and resiliency among AI (n = 69) and Caucasian (CA; n= 91) university students via …

Information Structure In Soumraye (Somrai), An Eastern Chadic Language, Emily Ruthann Miller
Information Structure In Soumraye (Somrai), An Eastern Chadic Language, Emily Ruthann Miller
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the information structure of Soumraye, also known as Somrai (common alternative spelling: Soumray; ISO: SOR; autonym: Chibne, Chibné or Shibne), a largely unstudied Eastern Chadic (Afro-Asiatic) language of Central Chad (Eberhard et al. 2020). Analysis is based on four fiction and two non-fiction narratives as well as part of an expository text and some previously published proverbs. I primarily use a framework from Lambrecht (1994). The default information structure of Soumraye is topic-comment or presupposition-focus. The construction for marked topic, or topicalization, consists of a preposed noun phrase ending with the topicalization particle da. Da's …

Lunar Daytime: Behavioral Experiments In A Space Analog Living And Working Environment, Marc M/ Cohen, Donald Barker, Suzanna Bianco, Sheryl Bishop, Pablo De Leon, Ron Gentile, Sandra Haeuplik-Meusburger, James A. Wise
Space Studies Faculty Publications
The Lunar Daytime concept addresses the challenge to behavioral scientists and architectural researchers in conducting research in space habitats or habitat analogs to produce scientifically valid results. Historically, researchers were limited to largely qualitative surveys. Instead, the Lunar Daytime (LDT) team will demonstrate the efficacy of a modifiable environmental habitat analog laboratory capable of producing empirical, measurable, and quantitative data sets. To measure effects on crew performance and crew behavioral responses as a dependent variable, researchers must be able to make and control changes in the physical living and working environment as an independent variable. Lunar Daytime refers to modeling …
Young Bisexual People’S Experiences Of Sexual Violence: A Mixed-Methods Study, Corey E. Flanders, Raeann E. Anderson, Lesley A. Tarasoff
Young Bisexual People’S Experiences Of Sexual Violence: A Mixed-Methods Study, Corey E. Flanders, Raeann E. Anderson, Lesley A. Tarasoff
Psychology Faculty Publications
Bisexual people are at an increased vulnerability for sexual victimization in comparison to heterosexual people, as well as gay and lesbian people. As the majority of first sexual violence experiences happen prior to age 25 for bisexual women, young bisexual people are particularly vulnerable. Despite consistent evidence of this health disparity, little is known about what factors might increase young bisexual people’s risk for sexual victimization, or how they access support post-victimization. The current study addresses this gap through a mixed-method investigation of young bisexual people’s experiences of sexual violence with a sample of 245 bisexual people age 18–25. Quantitative …

Reliability Of The Styku 3d Whole Body Scanner For The Assessment Of Body Size In Athletes, Joe D. Derouchey, Grant R. Tomkinson, Jesse L. Rhoades, John S. Fitzgerald
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Anthropometry is important for predicting sport performance. While 3-dimensional (3D) body scanners increase the feasibility of anthropometric assessment, reliability data on athletes are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of a portable, single-camera 3D body scanning system (Styku S100) to assess circumferences, and whole-body and segmental surface areas and volumes of athletes. Forty-nine (19 male) athletes were scanned six times (two sessions of three scans). The Styku scanner demonstrated nearly perfect reliability. Systematic errors were negligible (mean standardized bias [95%CI]: scan 1 vs. 4, 0.04 [0.02, 0.06]), random errors were negligible (mean standardized typical …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Objective: To estimate temporal trends in handgrip strength (HGS) for older Japanese adults between 1998 and 2017.
Design and Methods: Adults aged 60–79 years were included. Annual nationally representative HGS data (n=176,449) for the 19-year study period were obtained from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Temporal trends in mean HGS were estimated by sample-weighted regression models relating the year of testing to mean HGS. National trends in absolute, percent and standardized HGS were estimated by a post-stratified population-weighting procedure. Temporal trends in variability were estimated as the ratio of coefficients of variation (CVs).

Physical Therapy Management For A 16-Year Old Female Following Arthroscopic Plica Resection And Partial Synovectomy: A Case Report, Hannah Brennan
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose. Synovial plica is a common abnormality found primarily in the knee joint. Plicae can become irritated and inflamed with repeated motions causing pain and limited range of motion. Conservative management of symptoms is often the first method of treatment. However, surgical excision is considered if symptoms still persist.
Case Description. The patient is a 16-year-old female referred to physical therapy (PT) for post-arthroscopic management of a left plica resection and partial synovectomy. The patient presented with limited strength, range of motion and increased pain, congruent with her post-operative condition. The patient was seen by PT …

Clinical Decision-Making In A Patient With Cervical Radiculopathy And Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Double Crush Syndrome, Taylor Nord
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose: Double crush syndrome (DCS) is pathology involving the association between proximal and distal nerve lesions. It is often difficult to diagnose due to the variety of possible sources of tissue involvement and, therefore, is difficult to treat effectively. The purpose of this case report is to describe the physical therapy diagnosis and treatment of an older adult with DCS consisting of cervical radiculopathy (CR) and cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS).
Case Description: 74-year-old female with a diagnosis of CR was referred to physical therapy. The physical examination confirmed this diagnosis. Due to the patient not responding well …

The Assessment Of Forced Penetration: A Necessary And Further Step Toward Understanding Men’S Sexual Victimization And Women’S Perpetration, Raeann E. Anderson, Erica L. Goodman, Sidney S. Thimm
Psychology Faculty Publications
A unique form of sexual victimization that often goes undiscussed and, therefore, underassessed is that of being forced to penetrate another person (i.e., forced penetration). Due to forced penetration being a relatively novel addition to the definition of rape, there is a lack of assessment tools that identify forced penetration cases. Thus, the goal of this study was to assess the utility and validity of new items designed to assess forced penetration. More than 1,000 participants were recruited across three different studies to assess forced penetration victimization and perpetration. The rate of forced penetration victimization ranged from 4.51% to 10.62%. …
