Rural States’ Use Of Federal Government Terminology Related To Federal Student Aid And Postsecondary Accreditation: A Toolkit To Support Information Access And Use For Rural Students, Valerie Lefor
Theses and Dissertations
The nature of understanding both federal financial aid and accreditation processes may be complex. Both approaches involve complicated terminology that is not easily understood. In the United States, state governments have responsibility for education oversight, but their work is informed by the federal government. It is essential for students to understand federal aid and accreditation, especially for those who wish to consider options following high school that may lead to a college pathway. Research has shown that students who reside in rural areas may not have the same access to information as their peers in other locations. This Dissertation in …
Factors Influencing Levels Of Secondary Traumatic Stress In Non-Offending Caregivers Of Children With Sexual Or Physical Abuse Histories, Ani Mangold
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined factors influencing levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) in non-offending caregivers (NOCs) of children with histories of sexual or physical abuse. These factors included the nature of the abuse, NOCs’ relationships with the initiators of the abuse, children’s ages and genders, NOCs’ genders, NOCs’ personal trauma histories, familial structures, and the elapsed time between children’s disclosures of abuse and their trauma assessments. As a secondary objective, the present study examined the interactions between children’s self-reports of their own posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology, NOCs’ estimates of their children’s PTSD symptomatology, and NOCs’ self-reports of their own …
The Impact Of Traumatic Experiences On Women's Mental Health: The Moderating Effect Of Violent Media Consumption, Erika Meierding
The Impact Of Traumatic Experiences On Women's Mental Health: The Moderating Effect Of Violent Media Consumption, Erika Meierding
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Prior research informs us that negative mental health outcomes are associated with childhood trauma (Chapman et al., 2004; Widom, 1999) and with exposure to violence in the media (Hopwood & Schutte, 2017). Given the prevalence of violence against women (VAW) both in the media and in society in general, it is important to understand how VAW in the media may uniquely impact the mental health of women who have previous experiences of childhood trauma. Objective: Drawing from cultivation theory and the diathesis stress model of mental health, this study examined the moderating role of exposure to VAW in the …
Impact Of Expert And Victim Gender In A Case Involving Intimate Partner Violence, Mckenzie Schueller
Impact Of Expert And Victim Gender In A Case Involving Intimate Partner Violence, Mckenzie Schueller
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact expert witness and victim gender had on mock jurors’ perceptions in a court case involving intimate partner violence (IPV). Participants were asked to read a mock trial transcript that included testimony of a victim and an expert and respond to questions. Results indicated that gender of the victim was oftentimes more influential on mock jurors’ perceptions than gender of the expert. For instance, the female victim was perceived as less blameworthy than the male victim regardless of expert gender. Furthermore, both the male and female expert were viewed as more …

DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that transfers a methyl group onto the C-5 position of the cytosine to form 5-methylcytosine. DNA methylation regulates gene expression by recruiting proteins involved in gene repression or by inhibiting the binding of transcription factor(s) to DNA, especially in regulation of Allele Specific Expression (ASE). In this study, we used Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing technology to profile methylome in the two inbred mouse strains, C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2). Compared with bisulfite conversion followed by Illumina Sequencing, long-read sequencing technology allows us to achieve much longer read length of 4,653.675 base pairs on average …

Environmental Impacts Of Contact Lens Waste, Abigail Wilhelmi
Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase
Contact lenses have been used for decades to correct vision, and over 150 million people use contact lenses today. The materials used to make contact lenses have evolved drastically, but ultimately resulted in a specific plastic, silicone-derived hydrogel, which provides maximal comfort and clear vision, while also maintaining the eye health of the user. Contact lenses have enhanced the lives of many people, but a topic that is often left out of contact lens discussions is that of plastic waste. Single-use plastic and increased plastic pollution have recently been areas of concern and expanded research. Contact lenses are often forgotten …

The Benefits Of And Need For A Low-Barrier, Housing First Homeless Shelter In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Jenna Richardson
The Benefits Of And Need For A Low-Barrier, Housing First Homeless Shelter In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Jenna Richardson
Social Work Independent Study Projects (ISP)
The prevalence of substance use and mental illness are significant factors to consider when attempting to effectively resolve homelessness in the United States. By providing stable shelter or housing, individuals experiencing homelessness have a better capacity to address these obstacles that have historically caused them to lose, or prevented them from maintaining, their housing or shelter situation. Many homeless shelters in the United States have taken an abstinence-based approach that has left many homeless individuals unsheltered, and this can reduce the capacity of these individuals who may be trying to engage in services to address their other concerns. Low-barrier homeless …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and one of the most prominent challenges of precision healthcare is early identification of AD. To combat this latency in diagnosis, integration of machine learning has been exercised for more cost efficient and powerful diagnostic tools. Specifically, we have developed a workflow for identifying AD within a given sample. Utilizing cerebral cortex proteomic data as a baseline, we were able to test two different forms of feature selection and 6 different machine learning methods. The best performing of these combinations was using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) method with features …

Extending The Argument: A Case Study Exploring How To Decay Consumer Grudges In A Social Media World, Onnolee Nordstrom, Laura Egan
Librarian Publications
We study the process involved in diminishing consumer grudges against an industry. Through a qualitative case study of an organization tasked with changing consumer’s negative perceptions and beliefs about the Canadian agriculture industry, we uncover how the process of decaying grudges involves presenting information, creating credibile sources, and building positive affect. Our findings extend Thota and Wright’s (2006) grudgeholding decay framework.

Measuring Cross-Cultural Engagement Of Those Using The Growing Participator Approach, Cheryl Lea Cross
Measuring Cross-Cultural Engagement Of Those Using The Growing Participator Approach, Cheryl Lea Cross
Theses and Dissertations
The Growing Participator Approach (GPA) is a language-learning approach used among global professionals living cross-culturally. Developer Greg Thomson claims that through the GPA, learners grow as active participants in their new culture by learning language primarily in relationship. Because cultural participation is central to GPA, measuring social engagement is the most appropriate form of evaluation. This research seeks to answer the questions: (1) Does focused language learning using the GPA correspond with a high degree of social integration in the host community? (2) Does the use of scales from other academic fields help evaluate social engagement for language learners?

The Iconicity And Non-Arbitrariness Of Body Locations In Four Unrelated Sign Languages, John Samson
The Iconicity And Non-Arbitrariness Of Body Locations In Four Unrelated Sign Languages, John Samson
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I show that universally, there is a strong tendency for signs located on the body to have an iconic or non-arbitrary motivation, especially in their original form. I analyze sign language dictionaries from four unrelated sign languages and establish an iconic or non-arbitrary link between the form of the signs and their meaning, and classify those links according to 8 categories of body location iconicity and 3 categories of non-arbitrariness. The strength of this tendency depends on the percentage of signs that are shown to have an iconic or non-arbitrary link. For the data analyzed here this …

Although standard two-dimensional (2D) cell culture is an effective tool for cell studies, monolayer cultivation can yield imperfect or misleading information about numerous biological functions. In this study, we developed an alveolar-capillary exchange (ACE) chip aiming to simulate the cellular microenvironment at the alveolar-capillary interface. The ACE chip was designed with two chambers for culturing alveolar epithelial cells and vascular endothelial cells separately, which are separated by a microporous polycarbonate film that allows for the exchange of soluble biomolecules. Using this model, we further tested the toxic effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a form of airborne pollutant known to …

Receiver Apprehension & Listener Style Retention, Karlene T. Clark
Librarian Posters and Presentations
Receiver apprehension is the anxiety patrons feel when approaching someone for help. There are different types of ways in which people process information, some of which can be a detriment to the person hoping to learn something or just have a question answered. This presentation looks at the different styles of listeners and how librarians can utilize this knowledge to better meet the needs of patrons coming to the reference desk for assistance.
