Bird Species Define The Relationship Between West Nile Viremia And Infectiousness To Culex Pipiens Mosquitoes, Jefferson A. Vaughan, Robert Newman, Michael J. Turrell Oct 2022

Bird Species Define The Relationship Between West Nile Viremia And Infectiousness To Culex Pipiens Mosquitoes, Jefferson A. Vaughan, Robert Newman, Michael J. Turrell

Biology Faculty Publications

The transmission cycle of West Nile virus (WNV) involves multiple species of birds. The relative importance of various bird species to the overall transmission is often inferred from the level and duration of viremia that they experience upon infection. Reports utilizing in vitro feeding techniques suggest that the source and condition of blood in which arboviruses are fed to mosquitoes can significantly alter the infectiousness of arbovirus to mosquitoes. We confirmed this using live hosts. A series of mosquito feedings with Culex pipiens was conducted on WNV-infected American robins and common grackles over a range of viremias. Mosquitoes were assayed …

Sun Ra Sundays, Rodger Coleman Oct 2022

Sun Ra Sundays, Rodger Coleman

Digital Press Books

In his time on planet Earth, the iconoclastic musician, visionary, big band leader, and composer Sun Ra left behind a treasure trove of music—studio recordings, live performances, rehearsals—many of them appearing on his homegrown label Saturn. In Sun Ra Sundays, Rodger Coleman examines over 130 of these recordings, both released and unreleased, placing them in histor- ical and biographical context and giving detailed critical analyses of the music. Originally appearing on Coleman’s blog NuVoid, all of the essays have been updated, corrected, and arranged in discographical order. Sun Ra Sundays is a major work of criticism, a goldmine …

Effectiveness Of Infrared Thermography For Delamination Detection In Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks, Eberechi Ichi, Sattar Dorafshan Oct 2022

Effectiveness Of Infrared Thermography For Delamination Detection In Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks, Eberechi Ichi, Sattar Dorafshan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents findings of delamination detection using infrared thermography (IRT) in five in-service bridges using an unmanned aerial vehicle system. The authors have used semantically segmented IRT images to evaluate IRT’s effectiveness in detection of deck delamination for the first time. Using an adaptive image processing-based model, sub-surface delaminations were detected by optimizing all user-defined parameters in the model, including threshold values to convert the enhanced IRT images to a binary image. The optimization process has been done selecting iterating the user-defined parameters and their effect on the interaction of a set of sigmoid curves representing the model’s performance …

Best Practices For Implementing Experimental Research Methods, Jennifer L. Stoner Sep 2022

Best Practices For Implementing Experimental Research Methods, Jennifer L. Stoner

Marketing Faculty Publications

Experimental research methods have a long history across a number of different disciplines—including consumer research. Although experiments are just one of many alternative research methods, experiments are notable because they are the best way to establish causation. This makes experiments a powerful tool when researchers need to show cause and effect relationships. In this article, we provide best practices for implementing experimental research methods in consumer studies. Specifically, we discuss several important topics researchers need to consider when designing experiments, including developing hypotheses, operationalizing the variables (manipulated or measured), deciding on the research design (between-subjects, within-subjects, or mixed), selecting the …

The Library Of Chester Fritz, Brian Urlacher Sep 2022

The Library Of Chester Fritz, Brian Urlacher

Digital Press Books

Time is short!

Fate has entangled a library, a businessman, and the future of humanity. A trail of documents left behind by an eccentric businessman, traveler, and philanthropist Chester Fritz is the only way to understand the urgent danger. This book brings together Chester Fritz’s journals and follows his travels through war torn China and his ascent to the heights of global capitalism.

As World War II plunges the world into chaos, Fritz and his traveling companions wrestle with what to do and what forces are too dangerous or too dark for humanity to wield. But something must be done, …

Planetary Engineering Ethics: Mechanisms, Issues, And Consequences Of Terraforming, Haruka Kido Aug 2022

Planetary Engineering Ethics: Mechanisms, Issues, And Consequences Of Terraforming, Haruka Kido

Electrical Engineering Student Publications

This research and analysis paper addresses the extension of environmental ethics in the area of planetary engineering, specifically using the following three ethical viewpoints that inevitably shape our perceptions of the terraforming endeavors proposed to build our cosmological future appropriately: [1] environmental ethics analysis, [2] moral theories analysis (including utilitarianism, Respect for Persons ethics or “RP ethics,” and virtue ethics), and [3] risk analysis. The three ethical viewpoints, explained in “Concepts and Cases: Engineering Ethics. 6th Edition,” are used to elaborate justifications for or against terraforming beyond the mere theoretical explanations. To develop …

Weaving Ethnic Identity: Discovering The Threads Of Multilingual Diversity In The Fabric Of Group Identity Among Karen Communities Of Denver, Colorado, Charity J. Seidler Aug 2022

Weaving Ethnic Identity: Discovering The Threads Of Multilingual Diversity In The Fabric Of Group Identity Among Karen Communities Of Denver, Colorado, Charity J. Seidler

Theses and Dissertations

How do Karen immigrants use language within Colorado communities? My thesis answers this question through narrative case studies of six S’gaw Karen women. Many Karen refugees, who flee the decades-long conflict within their homeland in Myanmar (Burma), find themselves navigating life first in Thailand, and eventually in the United States as foreign-language speakers. These refugees encounter numerous linguistic and cultural barriers in their new U.S. homeland, where it is difficult to function in many domains if they do not have the opportunity to learn much English upon arrival.

The six case studies are based on recorded sociolinguistic qualitative open interviews. …

Religion After Rape: Changes In Faith And Hindered Acknowledgement, Danielle M. Piggott, Raeann E. Anderson Jul 2022

Religion After Rape: Changes In Faith And Hindered Acknowledgement, Danielle M. Piggott, Raeann E. Anderson

Psychology Student Publications

Previous research has demonstrated the dramatic effect trauma can have on religiosity. This study sought to extend this understanding by examining how a specific trauma, rape, influences religious beliefs and behaviors as well as how religiosity influences acknowledgement of rape. Rape acknowledgement is the personal use of the label rape to describe such an experience. The process of acknowledgement and general recovery from rape can include dramatic questioning of one’s religious beliefs and marks an important potential point of intervention, especially given the majority of the US identifies as religious. A sample of 310 mostly Christian, college-aged women completed questionnaires …

The History Of Hurry: A Historical Reflection On John Mark Comer's The Ruthless Elimination Of Hurry, Maren Schettler Jul 2022

The History Of Hurry: A Historical Reflection On John Mark Comer's The Ruthless Elimination Of Hurry, Maren Schettler

Floodwall Magazine

The Gladys Boen Scholarship is awarded “for the best short story, poem or collection of poems, or essay submitted by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the university.” The Creative Writing Scholarship Committee had this to say on Maren Schettler’s “The History of Hurry”: “With its fragmented form and its melding of criticism with the personal essay, Maren Schettler’s essay enacts the very principle defended in her essay’s argument: that we must slow down, resist the urge to hurry, and break free from the rule of clocks and calendars.”
