The Temperance Crusade In American Fiction, 1830-1860, David H. Vigeland

Theses and Dissertations

The American movement in support of temperance was especially strong from I830 to i860. During these decades, numerous authors used the medium of fiction to convince their readers of the values of abstinence from intoxicants. The purpose of this study is to examine a cross section of this fictional temperance literature in an effort to discover the viewpoints of these writers and to determine the attitudes toward antebellum American society which their works revealed.

In order to investigate more fully the feelings of both the authors and the historically voiceless masses who made their works so popular, such concepts as …

Morphogenesis Of Photoreceptors In The Chick Retina: An Electron Microscopic Study, Mark D. Olson May 1973

Morphogenesis Of Photoreceptors In The Chick Retina: An Electron Microscopic Study, Mark D. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

An electron microscopic investigation of the morphogenesis of photoreceptor cells in the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus) retina is presented in this study. The fine structural observations illustrate photoreceptor development ranging from five to twenty-one days of incubation and one to two days post-hatching. Retinal tissues were fixed in buffered aldehyde fixative, post-fixed in buffered 2% osmium tetroxide and otherwise conventionally prepared for electron microscopy.

The neural (sensory) retina of the chick is largely occupied by undifferentiated cells within the outer neuroblastic layer from the 5th to 9th days of incubation. This layer is later divided into the inner and outer …

Growth Stocks, Rates Of Return And Price-Earnings Ratios, Gilbert F. Lembree May 1973

Growth Stocks, Rates Of Return And Price-Earnings Ratios, Gilbert F. Lembree

Theses and Dissertations

One of the assumptions that is made in Chapter II of this paper is that the stock market operates without friction. But the market is not frictionless, and this reduces the efficient allocation of capital, which in turn is detrimental to the health of the economy. So, to the extent that friction in capital markets can be reduced, the economy will benefit.

One of the present sources of friction may be due to investors' reluctance to act on the basis of what they know because the tools they have to evaluate their knowledge are limited. The question: "Should high priceearning …

A Study To Determine What Educational Preparation Would Make An Industrial Arts Major Employable Of More Employable As A Manual Arts Therapist Or An Industrial Therapist In A Veterans Administration Hospital, Gary M. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Manual arts and industrial therapy programs have been historically an important segment of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service in Veterans Administration hospitals. Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the maximum reduction of A-weighted noise produced by operations of woodworking power tools and machines on various materials by stringent implementation of proper machine maintenance practices within the woodworking laboratory.

Literature was surveyed to determine the depth and scope of the problem of hearing loss resulting from exposure to excessive noise produced by woodworking power tools and machines. An overview of studies in the areas of physiological and psychological effects of noise on humans and the control of machine noise were included.

The data were gathered and analyzed from operations of machines …
