Intracranial Mast Cell Activation And Central Histaminergic Dysregulation In Food Allergy-Associated Neuropathology And Behavioral Changes, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson

Theses and Dissertations

Food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts inappropriately to an otherwise harmless food. The hypersensitivity response is known to cause physical symptoms ranging from mild gastrointestinal discomfort to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Curiously, there is growing evidence that some food-allergic individuals experience changes in mood and behavior after consuming an offending food despite not experiencing severe physical symptoms. However, the mechanism(s) through which food allergy may affect the brain and behavior has yet to be elucidated. Previously, we found that inducing non-anaphylactic cow’s milk allergy (CMA) in mice resulted in abnormal behavior, neuroinflammation, and an increased the number of brain mast …

Understanding Nanog's Role During Cell Differentiation, Oluwatobiloba Samuel Aminu Jan 2023

Understanding Nanog's Role During Cell Differentiation, Oluwatobiloba Samuel Aminu

Theses and Dissertations

Pluripotency is characterized by the capacity to self-renew and differentiate into all cell types. This state relies on both extrinsic factors, such as leukemia inhibitory factor and bone morphogenetic protein, and intrinsic factors, including pluripotent transcription factors. While the role of pluripotent transcription factors in stem cell maintenance is well understood, their functions beyond pluripotency remain unclear. In this study, we focused on NANOG, a core member of the pluripotency network, and investigated its roles in two different models of differentiation: the transition from the naive to the primed pluripotent state and neuroectodermal differentiation. Our findings demonstrate that NANOG plays a …
