The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz
The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz
Theses and Dissertations
Oligonucleotides based on methyl phosphonate linkages between nucleoside units have been of particular interest as anti-sense molecules for inhibiting mRNA function. The focus of our research has been on the development of new construction techniques for anti-sense oligonucleotides. Specifically we have been investigating new methods for generating iron and cobalt-modified linkages in oligonucleotides during the course of automated synthesis. We have found that (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)($\eta\sp2$-ethylene)iron reacts with 5$\sp\prime$-O-dimethoxytritylnucleoside 3$\sp\prime$-phosphite esters to yield (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)iron(ethyl)phosphonates. These phosphonates appear to be stable to the conditions commonly used to construct oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite methodology. This chemistry has been extended to the formation of a dimer on …

Theme Studies And Thinking: How Children Use Reading, Writing, And Talking To Develop And Extend Their Thoughts., Laurie M. Wenger
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the thinking practices of students as they used reading, writing, and talking in a thematic unit of study were described and analyzed. The subsidiary questions were suggested by recent studies and reports that indicated a decline of "thinking" in American schools. The questions were: (1) What categories of thinking were evident in the language and behaviors of young learners? (2) What environmental factors contributed to the development of children's thoughts and ideas? The thinking of nine first graders was described by semantic maps, direct observation, video and audio tapes, and analyzed using the categories of Bloom's Taxonomy and Tough's …
Assertive Behavior Training With Chronic Mentally Ill Persons Using A Videotape Format., Mark Carter
Assertive Behavior Training With Chronic Mentally Ill Persons Using A Videotape Format., Mark Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Young chronic mentally ill persons are individuals whose needs for treatment are well documented. Within the context of existing mental health systems, the client is generally faced with the need to be able to seek out services. With sobering regularity, these persons are quite poorly prepared to communicate their needs effectively. The present research proposed that improvements in the assertive communication skills of young chronic mentally ill persons would promote improvements in their interactions with caregivers. This study was undertaken to investigate a videotape strategy for the training of assertiveness. The sample for this study consisted of 42 male and female volunteers …

The Effect Of Academic And Social Integration On Second-Year Attrition: A Comparison Of American Indian And Non-Indian Students, Tammie J. L. Colwell
Theses and Dissertations
The validity of Tinto's model of college student attrition has been the focus of recent research, but few studies have focused on attrition of minority student populations. It was the intent of this study to (1) examine the effect that academic and social integration had on persistence/withdrawal behavior of freshman American Indian and non-Indian students, and (2) compare the degree of academic and social integration of American Indian and non-Indian students. This study involved the entire population of freshman American Indian students and a random sample of five hundred non-Indian freshman students who were enrolled at the University of North …
Relationship Of Adolescent Self-Image To The Risk Of Pregnancy, Vicki Wessman Downey
Relationship Of Adolescent Self-Image To The Risk Of Pregnancy, Vicki Wessman Downey
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescent pregnancy remains as one of the most pervasive socio- heaUh problems present in the United States. The health, economic, and social risk concomitant with adolescent pregnancy impacts on the child, mother, father, and society. Adolescent pregnancy, the problem that has not gone away, is an endemic phenomenon requiring long-term systematic intervention. It is imperative that underlying factors which contribute to this problem be identified so that subsequent research and educational programs can impact to reduce the problem.
One of the significant factors in teen pregnancy is low self esteem and self-concept. The purpose of this study was to examine …

Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill
Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill
Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking is a serious health hazard affecting a sizeable proportion of the adult population. The addictive nature of cigarettes has been blamed for the difficulty smokers experience in achieving and maintaining abstinence. Cigarette cravings are frequently cited as a factor contributing to relapse. Addiction theories proposed independently by Wikler, Siegel, and Solomon view cravings as classically conditioned responses to internal or external cues. These responses are presumably multidimensional, having cognitive, emotional, and physiological manifestations.
The current study examined cigarette cravings under controlled laboratory conditions. Forty-six male and female undergraduates served as participants. Stimuli commonly associated with smoking relapse were …

The Norwegian Short-Term Parochial School (Religionsskole) In North Dakota Lutheran Congregations, 1880s-1930s, Erik Luther Williamson
Theses and Dissertations
Within the Norwegian-American community of the United States and North Dakota there is a memory of "Norwegian Schools" held mainly in summers. These schools taught the essence of Lutheranism with hymn singing, and Norwegian grammar and literature. These schools seemed pervasive in North Dakota, but there is little material on them.. General church histories neglected them; Sunday School seemed dominant. People who had attended or taught the Norwegian Schools in the early twentieth century were becoming fewer. It was appropriate to research the schools before recollection faded and significance waned.
Research began with anniversary pamphlets of Lutheran churches which affirmed …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the recently introduced (DSM-III-R) Self-defeating Personality Disorder (SDPD) at the construct level. The trait structure of the construct and possible gender biases were analyzed. For purposes of construct investigation, a model addressing certain processes of human judgment was used. This model consisted of a trait inferencing method and three parameters: (1) consensual accuracy, (2) threshold, and (3) salience. A rating instrument consisting of selected items from scales of the Basic Personality Inventory (BPI) was used. Targets representative of normal, self-defeating, dependent, and dysthymia constructs were presented to 121 male …
