Prevention Of Falls In Adults Older Than 60 Years Through Therapeutic Riding: A Critically Appraised Topic, Isabella Johannes, Dominique Menard, Alicia Young
Critically Appraised Topics
This critically appraised topic paper will address the focus question relating to the intervention of therapeutic riding. A critically appraised topic (CAT) is an overview of scientific literature about an intervention or practical issue and how it relates to practice (Barends et al., 2017). The use of the Ecological Human Performance (EHP) model is to guide this CAT research with a theoretical basis. EHP was chosen for its emphasis on the person, environment, and tasks. The person is described in EHP as including their experiences, sensorimotor, cognition, and psychosocial abilities (Dunn et al., 1994). The use of EHP provides a …

In the United States, older adults account for about “16% of the population” (Administration on Aging, 2020, p.5). Older adults are defined as anyone aged 60 and older. There has been a steady increase in the number of older adults living in the United States, and that number is expected to continue growing at a rapid rate as it is predicted that by 2040, older adults will make up approximately “21.6% of the population” (Administration on Aging, 2020, p. 5-6). The majority of this population does not reside in assisted living facilities or nursing homes but instead lives in the …
Invasive Needling Therapy For Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Katelyn Krueger
Invasive Needling Therapy For Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Katelyn Krueger
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions characterized by tight bands of fascia and muscle fibers known as myofascial trigger points (MTrP’s). Empirical evidence suggests that deactivation of MTrP’s is best accomplished with invasive needling therapy such as dry needling, trigger point injections (TPI’s), and botulinum toxin (BTX-A) injections. The objective of this systemic review is to compare the efficacy of various needling therapies on pain intensity and additionally determine if ultrasound guidance and obtaining an LTR improves clinical outcomes. A comprehensive search of five databases including PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Cochran, and CINHAL …

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Anticholinergic medications cause a therapeutic or negative effect in the human body by blocking neuronal cholinergic receptors, thereby inhibiting the binding of acetylcholine in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. These medications have short-term side effects including dry mouth, constipation, visual impairments, or delirium; however, research regarding the long-term side effects is limited. The purpose of this systemic literature review is to determine the correlation between prolonged exposure to anticholinergic medications and the development of dementia. The literature databases PubMed, Cochrane Review, Science Direct (Elsevier), and DynaMed were utilized in this review. Journal articles published within the …

The Relationship Between Digit Ratio (2d:4d) And Muscular Fitness: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Brooke Pasanen
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Digit ratio (2D:4D), a marker of prenatal testosterone exposure, is a weak negative correlate of sports/athletic/fitness performance. While numerous studies have examined the relationship between 2D:4D and physical fitness, there has never been a comprehensive study that has synthesized studies examining relationships between 2D:4D and muscular fitness. Objectives: To systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between 2D:4D and muscular fitness measured as handgrip strength (HGS). Methods: This study systematically searched five electronic databases, reference lists, topical systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and personal libraries in November 2020. Peer-reviewed, cross-sectional studies that reported Pearson’s correlation coefficients between objectively measured 2D:4D and HGS were …
Charge Nurse Orientation, Angela Zafke
Charge Nurse Orientation, Angela Zafke
Nursing Capstones
Traditional undergraduate training focuses heavily on clinical skills with minimal emphasis on leadership. In practice, a nurse with clinical prowess is often promoted to the charge nurse position. Taking on the leadership role of a charge nurse can be a stressful experience without proper training and preparation that leads to burnout and turnover. With more experienced nurses facing retirement, now is the time to prepare future nursing leaders. This starts with adequately preparing a nurse to lead within the unit in the charge nurse role. A comprehensive literature review was conducted regarding charge nurse orientation. Charge nurse competencies were not …

Screening For Fibromyalgia In Patients With Chronic Widespread Pain, Justus Ongaga
Nursing Capstones
Background: Fibromyalgia has an estimated prevalence of 2% of the United States population, with a greater estimated prevalence among women (3.4%) than with men (0.5%). In addition to widespread pain, fibromyalgia symptoms include fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, memory problems, and numbness/tingling sensations. If the condition remains untreated or is poorly managed, then fibromyalgia can present problems among individuals, families, and communities. The lack in fibromyalgia screening processes at a Midwest Pain Clinic presented opportunity for the project.
Objectives: The purpose of this clinical project was to increase fibromyalgia screening by using the Fibromyalgia Rapid Screening Tool (FiRST) in …

Not A Magic Pill: An Educational Model On Antibiotic Prescribing, Christina Rose Leonard
Nursing Capstones
Background: Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing is common in outpatient settings across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found in studies that nearly 1 in 3 antibiotics prescribed at outpatient facilities is unnecessary. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics is accelerating the process of antibiotic resistance, as well as causing an increase in adverse events, including death. The literature indicates that knowledge plays a major factor in overprescribing, as well as provider attitude and patient expectations.
Objective: Present clinical practice guidelines to providers within a rural family practice clinic setting aimed at improving antibiotic prescribing. Gather information …

Worldwide, an estimated 20 million people require palliative care. The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance has identified the need for palliative care has never been higher and is increasing at a rapid rate due to the world`s aging population, increase in cancer, and noncommunicable disease. Despite the increased need, the palliative care establishment has not been efficient in identifying patients who need palliative care. The use of a standardized screening process to assist in the timely identification of patients with palliative care needs is lacking, or in some cases, non-existent. At a Midwestern pain clinic lack of screening is causing a …

Community-dwelling older adults are at a higher risk of falls due to many factors; including their environment and nutritional state. Falls have been described as “unintentionally coming to rest on the ground, floor, or other lower-level” (Buchner et al., 1993 as cited in Chase, Mann, Wasek, & Arbesman, 2012, p. 284). Community-dwelling older adults have been described in this research as individuals who are 65 years or older and who live independently. A rural community, according to the United States Census Bureau (2019) “encompasses all population, housing, and territory not included within an urban area” (para. 3) …

Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Nursing Capstones
Surgical site infections are an undesired consequence of surgery. Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for developing a postoperative infection (Anderson, 2019). Patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery should be required to be tobacco-free for at least four weeks before surgery. Health care organizations can implement a preoperative smoking cessation program within their facility to assist patients in achieving this requirement. To do so, an education plan is needed to effectively disseminate the main components of the program to both patients and health care professionals. The efficacy of the education plan can be exponentially increased by selecting learning strategies …
