Fiber Type And Cross-Sectional Area Characteristics In Hindlimb Muscles Of The Long-Lived Ames Dwarf Mouse, Kristine Dahlheimer Jan 2012

Fiber Type And Cross-Sectional Area Characteristics In Hindlimb Muscles Of The Long-Lived Ames Dwarf Mouse, Kristine Dahlheimer

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background: Ageing is associated with sarcopenia and a change of composition in muscle fibers. Ames dwarf mice have been found to have a decreased susceptibility to the deleterious effects of the ageing process, when compared to a normal mouse counterpart. This study looks at the muscle composition of the Ames dwarf mouse compared to the normal mouse by analyzing two muscles, ELD and Sol.

Methods: Researchers harvested hind limb muscles from Ames dwarf mice and normal mice. The fours muscles were EDL, Sol, Gastrocnemius/Plantaris, and TA. EDL and Sol were sliced and stained with fast and slow twitch and H&E …

Intonation Perception In Elderly And Young Adult Subjects, Afua Mmra Blay Jan 2012

Intonation Perception In Elderly And Young Adult Subjects, Afua Mmra Blay

Theses and Dissertations

Various studies have reported that elderly individuals have difficulty perceiving intonation, especially in emotional context. However, the nature and the extent to which this problem affects the communication ability of these individuals are poorly understood. Most studies use isolated sentences which unlike natural discourse indicate no contextual information. Consequently, it is unclear whether the intonation processing problems for the elderly are manifested across the board regardless of availability of contextual information. To understand this issue, the present study sought to compare the performance of elderly adults on perception of intonation in stimuli presented with and without contextual information. Participants were …

Neuropsychiatric Profiles In Dementia, David K. Johnson, Amber S. Watts, Benjamin A. Chapin, Raeann E. Anderson, Jeffrey M. Burns

Psychology Faculty Publications

We compared patterns of neuropsychiatric symptoms across 4 dementia types [Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VAD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Parkinson disease dementia], and 2 mixed groups (AD/VAD and AD/DLB) in sample of 2,963 individuals from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set between September 2005 and June 2008. We used confirmatory factor analysis to compare neuropsychiatric symptom severity ratings made by collateral sources on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire for people with Clinical Dementia Rating scores of 1 or higher. A 3-factor model of psychiatric symptoms (mood, psychotic, and frontal) was shared across all dementia types. Between-group …

Theory-Derived Approaches To Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Bethany Speecy May 2011

Theory-Derived Approaches To Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Bethany Speecy

Theses and Dissertations

As the world's population ages, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and other conditions that cause dementia is expected to increase. Although there is some awareness of the dangers of psychotropic drugs used to address behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, all too often these agents continue to be used as first-line treatment. Nurses need to be cognizant of safer, efficacious, holistic nonpharmacological approaches and utilize these in an individualized, systematic manner. Two mid-range nursing theories, the Need-Driven Dementia-Compromised Behavior model and the Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold model, provide conceptual frameworks for nonpharmacological interventions. This paper examines these models and describes …

Resources For Assisting Elderly Individuals With Insomnia: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Michelle Linn Anderson May 2011

Resources For Assisting Elderly Individuals With Insomnia: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Michelle Linn Anderson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The purpose of this scholarly project is to provide a resource manual for elderly individuals, and those providing care to elderly people, to assist the individual in relieving symptoms of insomnia. Insomnia affects elderly individuals worldwide. Studies document that approximately 50% of individuals in the United States over the age of 65 are noted to have either clinically diagnosed or self-diagnosed insomnia (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2007). As the population worldwide continues to age, it is important that occupational therapists, elderly individuals, family members and care providers be aware of the impact that symptoms of insomnia may …

Assessment Of Pain In The Older Adult With Dementia, Helen Laferriere May 2011

Assessment Of Pain In The Older Adult With Dementia, Helen Laferriere

Theses and Dissertations

Pain is common in the older adult as they continue to age regardless of their cognitive ability. Whether the older adult resides in the community, in a nursing facility or is hospitalized, pain is prevalent in this population. The assessment and management of pain in the older adult with cognitive impairment is a challenge for those in healthcare. Based on the severity of the dementia, the older adult may not be able to verbalize or describe their pain. Therefore, it is vital that healthcare providers are able to identify pain in this population. Observational assessment scales, such as the Abbey …

The Effectiveness Of Using Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Managing Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia (Bpsd) In Long Term Care Facilities, Sandra J. Holmgren May 2011

The Effectiveness Of Using Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Managing Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia (Bpsd) In Long Term Care Facilities, Sandra J. Holmgren

Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as aggression, agitation, anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis are frequently associated with the diagnosis of dementia (Schneder, Dagennan, & lnsel, 2005; Wand et al., 2005; Zee & Burkett, 2008). These tenns have been grouped together under the term 'behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia' (BPSD) by the International Psychogeriatiic Association (Douglas, James, & Ballard, 2004). Neuropsychiatric symptoms are often reasons for institutionalization in nursing homes due to increased burden and stress on the caregiver (Douglas, James & Clive, 2004; Murman et al, 2002). As the elderly population continues to grow, dementia and its related symptoms will remain …

Regulation Of Proteome Maintenance Gene Expression By Activators Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Α, Hongzu Ren, Beena Vallanat, Holly M. Brown-Borg, Richard Currie, J. Christopher Corton Nov 2010

Regulation Of Proteome Maintenance Gene Expression By Activators Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Α, Hongzu Ren, Beena Vallanat, Holly M. Brown-Borg, Richard Currie, J. Christopher Corton

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

The nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is activated by a large number of xenobiotic and hypolipidemic compounds called peroxisome proliferator chemicals (PPCs). One agonist of PPARα (WY-14,643) regulates responses in the mouse liver to chemical stress in part by altering expression of genes involved in proteome maintenance (PM) including protein chaperones in the heat shock protein (Hsp) family and proteasomal genes (Psm) involved in proteolysis. We hypothesized that other PPARα activators including diverse hypolipidemic and xenobiotic compounds also regulate PM genes in the rat and mouse liver. We examined the expression of PM genes in rat and mouse …

George Orwell's "Depression" Novels: Laying Bare The Emotional Cost Of The Great Depression In Britain, Sonja Hathaway Aug 2010

George Orwell's "Depression" Novels: Laying Bare The Emotional Cost Of The Great Depression In Britain, Sonja Hathaway

Theses and Dissertations

The economic hardships that many people are facing in this the first decade of the twenty-first century have led politicians, historians, economists, and others to re-examine the 1930s in an attempt to understand their own time. The decade of the Great Depression was one of severe worldwide economic crisis and has been well documented, especially in Britain. Records compiled during the period by historians, statisticians, and social investigators have led to studies on the economic, political, and social conditions of the time. People are not, however, only physical, economic, and social beings. The challenge in studying the interwar period in …

Elderly In Prison: A Programming Protocol, Chelsey Hunt, Sarah Janke Jan 2010

Elderly In Prison: A Programming Protocol, Chelsey Hunt, Sarah Janke

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The current U.S. correctional system is structured for the young, well, able-bodied prisoner and does not take into consideration the extensive needs of elderly inmates. The number of elderly inmate has been steadily increasing and is going to continue to rise with the increase of age expectancy of the average American and changes in in sentencing policies that increase the length of stay in prisons (Potter, Cashin, Chenoweth, Jeon, 2007; The Sentencing Project, 2005). Currently elderly inmates make up 12% of the federal prison population (Mauer, King, Young, 2004, p. 24).

An extensive literature review was conducted to determine the …
