Knowledge Translation Practices Of Health Services Research Organizations In The United States, Wendy Opsahl Jan 2012

Knowledge Translation Practices Of Health Services Research Organizations In The United States, Wendy Opsahl

Theses and Dissertations

Health services research organizations have generated a growing body of literature that focuses on better understanding challenges facing health care delivery. However, their findings do not always reach end users (e.g., policymakers, providers, managers, general public) in ways that are helpful, relevant, or cost-effective despite the availability of numerous resources designed to aid researchers in communicating more effectively. The purpose of this study was to understand better how health services research organizations in the United States communicate their research findings to end users; determine the degree to which they are translating research findings in ways consistent with the empirical evidence; …

“A Better Vision Of What Social Studies Can Be”: How Elementary Teachers' Beliefs Influence Their Use Of The “History Alive!” Textbook, Kathryn Hintz Aug 2011

“A Better Vision Of What Social Studies Can Be”: How Elementary Teachers' Beliefs Influence Their Use Of The “History Alive!” Textbook, Kathryn Hintz

Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative research project I investigated curricular decision-making and the relationship among teacher philosophies, textbook materials, and effective practice. Participants included five experienced fifth grade teachers who used a comprehensive social studies textbook package, History Alive! America's Past. Information was gathered through five 30–90 minute classroom observations and two or three interviews with each participant. Results indicate that teachers whose beliefs about student capabilities matched the textbook publisher's stated philosophies took full advantage of the program's innovative features. For four teachers, the textbook helped them put their beliefs into practice. One of the participants, who had less clearly-defined goals …

Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam Aug 2011

Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam

Theses and Dissertations

Graduate school is often experienced as a time of increased demands/expectations resulting in heightened levels of stress due to academic work, family responsibilities, job demands, financial pressure, and other life related issues. Besides stress, graduate school also brings about significant physical inactivity due to the shift of the immediate priority to academic accomplishment. Reports of increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among students highlight that this group may have particular risk not well-identified. Yet, relative risk can be reduced by lifestyle modifications, such as eating well, exercising, and stress reduction. The majority of the risk factors, to a …

“You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science”: A Qualitative Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad Michael Coauette Apr 2011

“You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science”: A Qualitative Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad Michael Coauette

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore the decision making processes of public two-year college presidents. This research examines the factors that influence a public two-year college president's decision to respond or not respond to external stakeholders that request new or improved programming/services from the college. The researcher incorporates the concept of naturalistic decision making to augment Stark and Lattuca's (1997) model that illustrates influences on the college educational environment to examine how presidents respond to requests made by external stakeholders. The researcher found that when presidents make decisions about responding to external stakeholder requests they are not simply …

Spatiality And Temporality In Communication Theories, Diana Iulia Nastasia Feb 2011

Spatiality And Temporality In Communication Theories, Diana Iulia Nastasia

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation has been planned and written as an extended review of literature on space and time within and outside of communication studies, and as a thorough categorization of issues about spatiality and temporality that have been and might be employed outside of and within communication studies. This dissertation has been envisioned and conceived as a critical look at both theories that consider space and time as unproblematic, that reify an ideal-typical perspective of time and an absolute-universal perspective of space, and theories that problematize space and time, that challenge the settled and predominant view of spatiality and temporality. The …
