Changing Bike Mode Share Between Time Periods For Suffolk County, Ma, David Wiosna
Changing Bike Mode Share Between Time Periods For Suffolk County, Ma, David Wiosna
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis looks at the impact of new bikeways on the rate of bicycle commuting among census tracts in the city of Boston, MA. Data from 2000 and averages from 2009-2013 are compared. Bikeways are negligible in the year 2000, but many were built after implementation of new policy in 2007. Data for 2009-2013 is interpolated into a common zonal scheme using 2000 census tract boundaries. Regression analysis is performed on socio-demographic and new bikeway variables. Results indicate that new bikeways are likely not cause of greater bike mode share in city of Boston.
Improving Student Relatedness Through An Online Discussion Intervention: The Application Of Self-Determination Theory In Synchronous Hybrid Programs, Nikolaus Theodor Butz
Improving Student Relatedness Through An Online Discussion Intervention: The Application Of Self-Determination Theory In Synchronous Hybrid Programs, Nikolaus Theodor Butz
Theses and Dissertations
Students' feelings of relatedness (i.e., feeling connected to others) are crucial for success in both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments; however, courses taught in these formats often limit relatedness development, either by removing spontaneous interaction (e.g., asynchronous delivery) or by introducing seemingly incompatible online and on-campus factions (e.g., synchronous delivery). As such, it was hypothesized that the strengths of one delivery mode could offset the weaknesses of the other. The purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate an online discussion board intervention designed to scaffold relatedness development. Deci and Ryan's (1985) self-determination theory (SDT) was adopted as the …

Missionary Education And The Problem Of Language: The International Missionary Council In Colonial Senegal, 1917-1935, Deborah Leah Lowder
Theses and Dissertations
Between the World Wars, as France refined its colonial structure and control over
Senegal, allowing international missionary networks to develop their own concepts of the
mission civilisatrice. Utilizing the concepts of tutelage and moral education, missionaries
in the International Missionary Council (IMC) defined their role in the French empire as
imperative to the development of African peoples. As self-proclaimed thwarters of the
degradation of the French secular state in Senegal, the IMC used concepts of tutelage and
moral education within the debates surrounding education defined the place of
missionaries within French colonialism in interwar Senegal. Through letters,
publications, and negotiations …

Regolith Erosion At Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Connor Lindberg, Jaakko Putkonen
Regolith Erosion At Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Connor Lindberg, Jaakko Putkonen
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
Glacier National Park is located within a mountainous region in western Montana. Due to recent glaciation, moraines are present at the upper elevations throughout the park. These young moraines erode at a rapid pace when first exposed by melting ice due to: age, vegetation cover, local climate, and human/animal activity. Using repeat photography in conjunction with lab work I was able to determine that the Grinnell Glacier moraine’s crest is lowering at a much faster pace than previously published rates. Conservation policy within the park should be adjusted to reflect this information and additional research should be conducted to determine …
Blizzards In The Upper Midwest, 1980-2013, Lawrence Burkett
Blizzards In The Upper Midwest, 1980-2013, Lawrence Burkett
Theses and Dissertations
Blizzards are severe snowstorms characterized by high winds and enough snow in the air to significantly reduce visibility near the surface. In the conterminous United States, published scientific literature indicates blizzards as common in the Dakotas and Minnesota. In this study, blizzard frequency by year, month, and county was recorded from 1980-2013 in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Additionally, blizzard duration and area impacted were estimated including trends in blizzard frequency. Ninety-three blizzards impacted the Upper Midwest in 34 years studied with an average of 2-3 blizzards per year, with a linear increase in blizzards with respect to time. …
Evaluating Sedimentary Basins For Geothermal Power Production Potential And Bottom-Hole Temperature Corrections, Anna Marguerite Crowell
Evaluating Sedimentary Basins For Geothermal Power Production Potential And Bottom-Hole Temperature Corrections, Anna Marguerite Crowell
Theses and Dissertations
At present, the risks and costs associated with geothermal energy wildcat exploration are prohibitive. With improved technology, the future may be brighter, and a play fairway analysis, for geothermal exploration can guide development. Comparing geophysical data with geothermal gradient allows identification of potentially economic areas of interest. The play fairway analysis is a common tool used by the petroleum industry to identify areas for potential exploration. The analysis identifies areas in the Denver, Illinois, Michigan, and Williston Basins with the highest development potential. A great deal of data have potential for a play fairway analysis, but data quality is problematic …
Voices From The Frontier: Stories Of Nurse Practitioners Working In Remote Areas, Lynn Marie Jakobs
Voices From The Frontier: Stories Of Nurse Practitioners Working In Remote Areas, Lynn Marie Jakobs
Theses and Dissertations
Frontier communities are the most sparsely populated and geographically remote areas in the United States. Residents of these communities often lack access to healthcare resources of any kind. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are more likely than physicians to practice in these areas and provide a vital link in the frontier healthcare safety net.
This narrative inquiry into the practice experiences of frontier NPs informs the discipline of nursing regarding the significant contribution frontier NP practice makes to the delivery of frontier healthcare. This inquiry creates a repository of stories upon which nurse leaders, health care policy makers, and nurse educators interested …

Needs Assessment Of A Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program In The Near Southside Neighborhood In Grand Forks, Nd, Derrick Lapoint
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the needs of a Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) Program to help the elderly successfully age-in-place in the Near Southside Neighborhood (NSS) in Grand Forks, North Dakota. As aging becomes increasingly an issue of concern, establishing a NHN Program in the NSS would help the elderly remain independent in their own home and community. The NHN Program is a specialized program designed to provide aging services to those who are in need through community engagement. Through surveys, data was collected in the Grand Forks Area and the NSS. The first survey was conducted …

Mapping Flash Flood Potential Using Gis And The Flash Flood Potential Index (Ffpi) In The Turtle River And Forest River Watersheds In North Dakota, Dasuni Jeewandika Perera Ranapathi Arachchige
Theses and Dissertations
Flash flooding is a rapid onset natural hazard and can cause extensive property and crop damages as well as deaths. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration storm database reports 464 flash flood events from 1996 to 2013 in North Dakota causing two deaths, more than $145 million in property damage and $14 million in crop damage. The main purpose of this study is to identify the critical areas of flash flooding within two selected watersheds in eastern North Dakota. The research method relies on the use of a GIS-based model, the Flash Flood Potential Index, that incorporates physiographic characteristics from …

Lateral Migration Of The Red River, In The Vicinity Of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Dylan Babiracki
Lateral Migration Of The Red River, In The Vicinity Of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Dylan Babiracki
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
River channels are dynamic landforms that play an important role in understanding the alluvial changes occurring within this area. The evolution of the Red River of the North within the shallow alluvial valley was investigated within a 60 river mile area north and south of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Despite considerable research along the Red River of the North, near St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba, little is known about the historical channel dynamics within the defined study area. A series of 31 measurements were taken using three separate methods to document the path of lateral channel migration along areas of this …

Hits And Runs: Determinants Of The Cross-Country Variation In The Severity Of Impact From The 2008-09 Financial Crisis, Shane Dwyer, Chih Ming Tan
Hits And Runs: Determinants Of The Cross-Country Variation In The Severity Of Impact From The 2008-09 Financial Crisis, Shane Dwyer, Chih Ming Tan
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
Recent empirical work on the 2008-09 financial crisis has found mixed results on the usefulness of indicators to explain the cross-country variation in the incidence of the crisis in non-originating countries. While some authors have found success with various indicators, Rose and Spiegel (2009a,b) find that almost no indicators are robust. We employ Bayesian model averaging (BMA) to verify Rose-Spiegel’s conclusions under model uncertainty, confirming their findings. We then employ latent class models (LCM) to check the data for parameter heterogeneity. We find that there is substantial evidence of heterogeneity in the relationship between various indicators and crisis impact, both …
Predicting Irregular Flight Operations Using A Binary Machine Learning Approach Based On National Meteorological Data, Martin Hellwig
Predicting Irregular Flight Operations Using A Binary Machine Learning Approach Based On National Meteorological Data, Martin Hellwig
Theses and Dissertations
Flight delays are caused by a multitude of external influences as well as revenue driven carrier decisions. Some factors are obvious while others remain inaccessible to the traveling public. Yet knowing of potential flight delays or cancellations in advance can significantly improve passengers’ travel experience and empower them to make informed decisions when flight irregularities occur. We combine a Naïve Bayes - based feature selection method with publicly available meteorological data and flight performance statistics to create a forecasting tool that provides passengers with an improved prediction of potential delays. After promising initial results we optimize our feature selection and …

Lake Flooding And Synoptic Weather-Type Frequency At Devils Lake, North Dakota, Usa, Between 1965 And 2010, Paul E. Todhunter, Emily A. Knish
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Since the spring of 1993, the water surface elevation at Devils Lake, a terminal lake in eastern North Dakota, USA, has risen by 8.8 m, producing more than 1 billion USD in direct flood damages. We examine the relationship between weather-type frequencies at Bismarck, North Dakota, and lake volume changes from 1965 to 2010 using the Spatial Synoptic Classification (SSC) system. First, we find statistically significant changes in the frequency of selected weather types over both annual and seasonal time periods. This indicates a trend toward in - creased advection of more humid weather types that is consistent with the …
