Natural Hydroclimatic Forcing Of Historical Lake Volume Fluctuations At Devils Lake, North Dakota (Usa), Paul E. Todhunter, Rhonda Fietzek-Devries
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Devils Lake, a terminal saline lake in eastern North Dakota, has experienced catastrophic flooding over the past two decades producing direct damages in excess of $1 billion ($USD). We use three long-term datasets to examine the temporal coherence between historical lake fluctuations and basic hydroclimatic drivers. Monthly precipitation and mean monthly air temperature data are used to characterize long-term precipitation delivery and evaporative demand. Monthly water balance data for a representative location are used to assess basin soil moisture conditions. A lake volume time series documents lake volume fluctuation in response to long-term precipitation and regional soil moisture conditions. Three …

The Bakken Goes Boom: Oil And The Changing Geographies Of Western North Dakota, William Caraher, Kyle Conway
The Bakken Goes Boom: Oil And The Changing Geographies Of Western North Dakota, William Caraher, Kyle Conway
Digital Press Books
In 2008, the Bakken went boom. Thanks to advances in hydraulic fracturing, oil production in western North Dakota exploded. As the price of oil went up, so did the oil rigs. People came from all over the country (and the world) in search of work, and cities and towns struggled to keep up. This book is about the challenges they faced. It is about the human dimensions of the boom, as told by artists, poets, journalists, and scholars. It captures the boom at its peak, before the price of oil fell and the boom went bust.
This is the only …

Shelterbelt Density Dynamics And Their Driving Forces In Grand Forks County, North Dakota, 1962 To 2014, Morgen Walter Victor Burke
Shelterbelt Density Dynamics And Their Driving Forces In Grand Forks County, North Dakota, 1962 To 2014, Morgen Walter Victor Burke
Theses and Dissertations
Grand Forks County, ND, has one of the highest concentrations of shelterbelts in the World (Knutson 2011). As these trees aged and reached their expected lifespans, the quality of the shelterbelts has decreased and many have been removed. The rate of tree removal is thought to be increasing, with few shelterbelts being replanted. This raises concerns over possible increases in soil erosion caused by wind, such as was experienced in the 1930s. Using remotely sensed imagery and GIS, historic and recent shelterbelt densities can be measured and changes over time can be recorded. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) can be …
Exploring Pedagogical Decision Making And Metacognition Of Faculty Teaching Abroad, Yuliya Kartoshkina
Exploring Pedagogical Decision Making And Metacognition Of Faculty Teaching Abroad, Yuliya Kartoshkina
Theses and Dissertations
The number of faculty-led short-term study abroad programs is growing rapidly. However, the literature on pedagogical design of such programs is very limited. This qualitative research study was conducted to explore how faculty members make pedagogical decisions about teaching abroad as well as cognitive processes they engage in when making these decisions. Six faculty members from different institutions and academic departments were interviewed. Their colleagues recognized them as experts in the field based on years of teaching abroad and effectiveness of their practice.
Two important findings came out of this study. First, when making pedagogical decisions about teaching abroad, all …
How Media Ownership Affects Community Journalism: A Case Study Of The Grand Forks Herald, Angela Sue Cary
How Media Ownership Affects Community Journalism: A Case Study Of The Grand Forks Herald, Angela Sue Cary
Theses and Dissertations
Local print newspapers have experienced many fiscal challenges over the past decade resulting in the downsizing of personnel and the consolidation of other resources. This restructuring ultimately affects its readers who may not receive the level of local information they need to further the ideals of civic engagement and democracy within their community. This study examines the relationship between media ownership and the amount of local news found within one newspaper serving a mid-size Midwestern city. This research was conducted through comparisons of the number of articles, column inches, and local reporter data in the newspaper’s two primary news sections …
Factors That Influence The Adoption Of Geographic Information Systems In A Professional Work Environment: A Study Of The Property Assessment Profession, Daniel J. Fasteen
Factors That Influence The Adoption Of Geographic Information Systems In A Professional Work Environment: A Study Of The Property Assessment Profession, Daniel J. Fasteen
Theses and Dissertations
The adoption of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology has been emerging in many professional work environments — including the property assessment discipline. Although many uses of GIS have been thoroughly documented throughout the literature in a variety of disciplines, there has been little research on the perceived factors that influence its adoption in professional work settings. The purpose of this research is to assess factors that influence the adoption of geographic information systems technology in a professional work environment. The work environment being studied is the property assessment profession. An online survey was sent out to property assessment professionals from …
The Explanatory Role Of Reproductive Planning On Single Mothers’ Demographic Trends And Financial Outcomes, Kenzie Yezzi
The Explanatory Role Of Reproductive Planning On Single Mothers’ Demographic Trends And Financial Outcomes, Kenzie Yezzi
Theses and Dissertations
Academic studies of single-mother poverty to date largely focused on presenting and analyzing the correlation between single-mother poverty incidence and variables such as maternal age, education and employment. The previous literature strongly demonstrated that younger maternal age, lower education levels and reduced income are positively correlated with single mother status compared to married mothers (Bitler & Waller, 2008; Minnotte, 2012). Since previous studies have also shown that younger maternal age, lower educational attainment and weaker employment history greatly increase the risk of poverty among single mothers (Zhan & Pandey, 2004) I seek to further examine which background phenomena may be …
