Eros And Thanatos In D. H. Lawrence's "Sons And Lovers" And "Lady Chatterley's Lover" And In John Fowles's "The Collector" And "Daniel Martin"., Salah Ed-Din A. Nefily

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between eros and thanatos in four novels, Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence and The Collector and Daniel Martin by John Fowles. Sons and Lovers and The Collector reflect their authors' early awareness of certain thanatotic forces in modern life. Lawrence criticizes the negative influence of mechanization on human beings whereas Fowles opposes lack of freedom. The two writers' awareness of these negative forces in the early novels is followed in Lady Chatterley's Lover and in Daniel Martin by presentations of salvational plans which liberate or heal the novels' protagonists. Recent Changes In The Ethnobotany Of Standing Rock Indian Reservation, Shelly Katherene Kraft

Theses and Dissertations

Gathering arid preserving wild fruits and vegetables for food and medicine, especially from the wooded bottomlands, was a traditional part of the Lakota culture. Plant use among the Lakota has been greatly reduced and in some cases, completely eliminated by the damming of the Missouri River by Oahe Dam. This dam, which forced the Lakota of Standing Rock Reservation to give up their homes in the bottomlands in violation of their treaty rights of 1868 had a considerable impact on the biogeography of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, in January I960, almost 200 Indian families were evacuated from their homes …

The Effects Of Viewing Aggressive Family Discord On The Spatial Perception Of A Home Environment., John David Collins

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this study was to examine the effects of viewing domestic discord on cognitive mapping in a home-like environment. Subjects' level of arousal was manipulated by having them watch a videotape containing scenes of domestic violence before they completed a cognitive mapping task in a furnished, two-bedroom apartment. In an attempt to prolong the effect of videotape content, subjects were exposed to white noise while they completed the cognitive mapping task. The inclusion of control conditions, along with the two arousal factors (videotape content and noise), resulted in four experimental groups.Forty female subjects watched one of the videotapes …

A Remote Sensing Technique For Assessing Plant Species Diversity, Robin Odom Rapai

Theses and Dissertations

Earth science has developed over many centuries as a dynamic and ever evolving research field. In the last decade, earth scientists have postulated many thought provoking theories, tools, models and techniques critical to ecological problems and plant species preservation. The primary objective of this study was to test whether there is a relationship between variations in 35mm color aerial photographs' pixel brightness and total numbers of plant species in selected prairie preserves In northwest Minnesota, a region dominated by typical tallgrass prairie and bordering the prairie-forest ecotone. Seventeen prairie preserves lie on the Minnesota side of the Red River of …

Changing Accessibility For Tourism In The Aurland Municipality Of Norway, Kari Brekke May 1989

Changing Accessibility For Tourism In The Aurland Municipality Of Norway, Kari Brekke

Theses and Dissertations

Because of changes in accessibility, the Aurland Municipality in Western Norway may be subjected to increased tourism. In 1991, an all-season highway will open between Oslo and Bergen, which will pass directly through the Aurland Municipality. The shift in importance from mostly seasonal rail/fjord traffic to an all-season automobile traffic has the potential for accelerating tourism pressures in this highly scenic area. The purpose of this study was to address possible problems and prospects of changing accessibility for tourism in the Aurland Municipality.

In order to examine tourism in the Aurland Municipality, a number of methods were used. Fieldwork was …

Napoleon And Russia And The Teaty Of Tilsit: Its Implications For Europe, Paul A. Hefti Dec 1988

Napoleon And Russia And The Teaty Of Tilsit: Its Implications For Europe, Paul A. Hefti

Theses and Dissertations

The Treaty of Tilsit of 1807 between Russia and France was a minor slowing of the flow of the Napoleonic Wars that dominated Europe in the early nineteenth century. It united the two nations against Britain, but, in larger terms, it polarized continental Europe into two separate (or distinct) conflicting spheres. The treaty and its effects provided a foreshadowing of post-World War I Europe and the subsequent twentieth-century concept of peaceful coexistence.

The major personalities involved in making the treaty were Alexander I of Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte of France. Their meeting on a boat in the Niemen River had …

A History Of School Reorganization In Sargent Country Since 1947, Larry E. Skroch May 1988

A History Of School Reorganization In Sargent Country Since 1947, Larry E. Skroch

Theses and Dissertations

Sargent County's school district reorganization story began in 1947. In that year North Dakota's first comprehensive school district law was passed. Sargent County had twenty-nine school districts but needed a larger tax base to improve the quality of education. By November 1947, a County Reorganization Committee was formed and its actions became front-page news. School reorganization ignited great excitement throughout the county, and public interest ran high in 1948 because people worried about losing their schools and about possible tax increases. As people took sides, some friend ships were broken; town residents became united in the defense of their school, …

Ethnogeography Of Middle Missouri River Indians: 1738-1889, Kenneth C. Dagel May 1988

Ethnogeography Of Middle Missouri River Indians: 1738-1889, Kenneth C. Dagel

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present the ethno- geography of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, and to a lesser extent, the ethnogeography of the Arikara and Lakota during the period 1738-1889. It provides not only a listing of place-names, but it also includes an explanation of why the locations associated with those names were so important, and remain important to these tribes.

The primary hypothesis of this research is that toponyms of Native American origin were generated because of perceptual and/or pragmatic reasons. Place-names, obtained from historical journals and secondary sources, were classified using a standard toponym typology. …
