Assessing Cultural Drivers Of Safety Resilience In A Collegiate Aviation Program, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, Marcos Fernandez Tous
Assessing Cultural Drivers Of Safety Resilience In A Collegiate Aviation Program, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, Marcos Fernandez Tous
Aviation Faculty Publications
Organizational safety resilience is a key factor in sustaining an effective safety management system (SMS) in high-reliability organizations (HROs) such as aviation. Extant research advocates for monitoring, assessing and continuously improving safety in an organization that has a fully-functional SMS. Safety resilience provides a buffer against vulnerabilities. Extant research also suggests a paucity in terms of a measurement framework for organizational safety resilience in collegiate aviation operations. A quantitative approach using Reason’s safety resilience concept (Reason, 2011) is used to assess organizational safety resilience in a collegiate aviation program with an active conformance SMS accepted by the FAA. A sample …

Physics Faculty Publications
Evolution of galaxies in dense environments can be affected by close encounters with neighbouring galaxies and interactions with the intracluster medium. Dwarf galaxies (dGs) are important as their low mass makes them more susceptible to these effects than giant systems. Combined luminosity functions (LFs) in the r and u band of 15 galaxy clusters were constructed using archival data from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. LFs were measured as a function of clustercentric radius from stacked cluster data. Marginal evidence was found for an increase in the faint-end slope of the u-band LF relative to the r-band with increasing clustercentric …

We report the discovery of two ultra-faint stellar systems found in early data from the DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE). The first system, Centaurus I (DELVE J1238–4054), is identified as a resolved overdensity of old and metal-poor stars with a heliocentric distance of , a half-light radius of , an age of , a metallicity of , and an absolute magnitude of . This characterization is consistent with the population of ultra-faint satellites and confirmation of this system would make Centaurus I one of the brightest recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. Centaurus I is detected in Gaia DR2 with …

Nursing Capstones
Substance abuse disorder among Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) poses risks to both the provider and the patients they care for. Associated with this disorder is the problem of drug diversion. The specialty of anesthesia is recognized as having an elevated risk for the development of substance abuse. Although there are multiple studies addressing substance abuse amongst anesthesiologists, there are few similar studies specific to CRNAs. The purpose of this DNP project was to ascertain the level of Self-Efficacy CRNA supervisors have when intervening with one of their direct reports found to have been diverting scheduled narcotics. Knowledge level regarding …

Improvement In Heart Failure Management Through Implementation Of An Interdisciplinary Algorithm To Reduce 30 Day Hospital Re-Admission, Lindsey Whiting
Nursing Capstones
Heart failure (HF) is a progressive disease in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to support the body’s vital functions. Recent projections estimate that by the year 2030 the number of HF patients will increase by 46%, resulting in an increased financial strain on the health care system. In response to increasing health care costs the Hospital Re-Admission Reduction Program (HRRP) was implemented. The goal of the HRRP is to improve the quality of patient care by linking defined parameters of quality of patient care to the payment/reimbursement of health care providers and hospitals. A rural northern …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) displays a long asymptomatic stage before dementia. We characterize AD stage-associated molecular networks by profiling 14,513 proteins and 34,173 phosphosites in the human brain with mass spectrometry, highlighting 173 protein changes in 17 pathways. The altered proteins are validated in two independent cohorts, showing partial RNA dependency. Comparisons of brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid proteomes reveal biomarker candidates. Combining with 5xFAD mouse analysis, we determine 15 Aβ-correlated proteins (e.g., MDK, NTN1, SMOC1, SLIT2, and HTRA1). 5xFAD shows a proteomic signature similar to symptomatic AD but exhibits activation of autophagy and interferon response and lacks human-specific deleterious events, …

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Time studies have been conducted with a variety of occupations. However, no known research has examined the workload of correctional counselors. The Iowa Department of Corrections, in partnership with the American Probation and Parole Association, performed the first known workload evaluation of this population. Over a hundred correctional counselors participated in a time study informed by a task analysis conducted with a representative advisory committee. The most common activities concerned inmate requests, classification, assessment, release planning, treatment group work, and administrative tasks. Most concerning, respondents indicated anywhere from 20-to-50% of the activities engaged in were unsatisfactorily completed.

Fluid Identity Play: A Case Study Of A Bilingual Child’S Ethnic Identity Construction Across Multiple Contexts, Hyonsuk Cho, X. Christine Wang
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
Informed by positioning theory as well as a nexus of multimembership, the year-long case study examined how a 7-year-old Korean American bilingual child, Meeso, constructed her ethnic identity across different educational contexts. Data were collected through observations of Meeso’s interactions with her monolingual and bilingual peers and teachers. Discourse analysis revealed that Meeso constructed fluid ethnic identity positionings depending upon how she desired to position herself and to be positioned by others. We also identified that the social context, language proficiency, and peer dynamics were related to the process. Based on the findings, we discuss the roles of context, language, …

In 2018, one in 10 infants were born premature in the United States, which is classified as being born prior to 37 weeks gestation (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2019). This includes an average of 7,303 babies each week (March of Dimes, 2020). The final months and weeks in utero are shown to be critical to typical development (CDC, 2019). The organs associated with the sensory system begin to develop within utero around eight weeks and the development of the senses continues well into childhood and adolescence (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Hearing and vision are the last two sensory systems to …
