Preliminary Study Of Lake Agassiz Sediments, James D. Ross Jan 1967

Preliminary Study Of Lake Agassiz Sediments, James D. Ross

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The Agassiz sediments have been difficult to study because of their complex stratigraphy and homogeneous lithology. The mineral particle size distribution and the petrography of these sediments were the basis of a preliminary study which allowed a columnar section at Grand Forks to be divided into nine stratigraphic units. These are, proceeding from the bottom to the top: Unit 1, gravelly clay loam; Unit 2, gray clay with gravel; Unit 3, dark gray silty clay loam; Unit 4, grayish brown sand; Unit 5, dark gray clay; Unit 6, gray clay with gravel; Unit 7, dark gray clay; Unit 8, gray …

The Effect Of A Second Stress On Growth Of Tetrahymena Pyriformis, Janice M. Granum Jan 1967

The Effect Of A Second Stress On Growth Of Tetrahymena Pyriformis, Janice M. Granum

Theses and Dissertations

This research was undertaken to determine the effect on growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis of a single stress followed at some later time by a second stress, using temperature change and osmotic pressure change as stress factors.

Growth rate of T. pyriformis was determined under standard conditions of temperature and osmotic pressure (29°C and 100 milliosmols). A single stress consisting of a decrease in temperature to 20°C or an increase in osmotic pressure to 300 milliosmols was applied to an exponentially growing culture and its effect noted. After a recovery period a second, different stress was applied to the culture J …

Time And Soil Development On Lateral Moraines, Martin River Glacier, South-Central Alaska, John R. Tinker Jr. Jan 1967

Time And Soil Development On Lateral Moraines, Martin River Glacier, South-Central Alaska, John R. Tinker Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

During the summer of 1966, eighteen soil profiles on a series of 21 lateral moraines, were studied to ascertain the relationship of time to soil development. The moraines are located on Charlotte Ridge on the south margin of the Martin River Glacier in south-central Alaska. The elevation of the highest moraine is approximately fifteen hundred feet and is located 800 feet above the present level of the glacier.

To determine the direct effect of time on soil formation, the remaining soil forming factors were kept constant; the soil pits were located so that relief, exposure, and vegetation of the sites …

Bivalvia And Paleoecology Of The Fox Hills Formation (Upper Cretaceous) Of North Dakota, Rodney M. Feldmann

Theses and Dissertations

The bivalve fauna of the Fox Hills Formation, Maestrichtian, of North Dakota was studied in an attempt to modernize the nomenclature of known bivalves, describe new forms, interpret the relationships of members of the formation, and establish the paleoecological setting in which the Fox Hills was deposited.

The Fox Hills Formation crops out in Logan, Emmons, Sioux, Morton, Burleigh, Kidder, Pierce, McHenry, Bottineau, and Bowman counties in North Dakota. It is best exposed along the Missouri River in south-central North Dakota. Traditionally, the formation has been subdivided into four members, all of which are exposed in the type area of …

Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton Jan 1967

Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Lee Clayton and approved by Walter L. Moore -and John R. Reid as members of the examining connnittee, of which Mr. Clayton was chairman.

In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.

The principal mechanism of scarp migration is soilfall which is initiated by undercutting of the scarp …

A Comparative Study Of Two Programed Instructional Methods And Conventional Instruction In A Unit Of Ninth Grade Physical Science, Ronald James Mckee

Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the Problem

The problem was to determine whether a combination of conventional and programed instruction was more effective than conventional instruction alone in the teaching of a ninth-grade Physical Science unit, "Matter,Atoms, and Molecules." The three treatment groups compared were (1) the Conventional Group, (2) the Introductory Group, in which the programed material was used as initiatory assignments, and (3) the Review Group, in which the programed material was used as review assignments. Student achievement was measured by means of the Adjusted Recall Gain Score, the Adjusted Application Gain Score, and the Adjusted Total Gain Score.

Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson Aug 1966

Light Microscopy Of Peripheral Nerve Adequately Fixed For Electron Microscopy, Leonard L. Gunderson

Theses and Dissertations

Electron microscopy has settled prior controversies regarding the relationship of axon, myelin and Schwann cell bat doubt remains about the correct interpretation of the classic binding sheaths. Perineurium is customarily interpreted to be flattened fibroblasts but recent evidence suggests attenuated Schwann cells. This study attempts to reinterpret the morphology of peripheral nerve known to be fixed adequately for fine structure. Special emphasis is placed on the binding sheaths, especially perineurium.

Forty white rats were perfused with buffered aldehydes. Sural and sciatic nerves were removed. Smaller nerves were obtained with orbital contents and the loose connective tissue of spleen and pancreas. …

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty-nine rabbits (Oryctoloous cuniculus) weighing 2.0 to 3.0 kilograms were used in this investigation. Spleen slides from 14 animals were processed to show (1) the presence of non-specific esterase according to the method of Pearce, (2) the presence of acid phosphatase by the method of Burstone, (3) the metalophil reaction according to the short method of marshall, (4) the histological features by routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, and (5) the presence of hemosiderin iron by the method of Gomori. Twenty-five animals were divided into 3 groups which received injection by posterior marginal ear vein, eleven animals received 10 cc per …
